The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into six areas of study, containing either two or three set works. This component gives students the opportunity to reflect on, analyse and evaluate music in aural and/or written form. To achieve this objective, students need to use their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language to make critical judgements about the repertoire and context of music within the areas of study. Students should also study a range of pieces beyond these set works. The suggested other musical pieces for each area of study (see Appendix 4 of the specification) provide students with breadth, enabling them to place their knowledge of musical elements, context and language in a wider context, and apply their knowledge and understanding to more pieces of music. The suggested other music can help students to relate their learning to music in the set works, but their study is not compulsory. Teachers can identify and teach other pieces of music to support their students’ learning. The following music and musicians are examples of how each of the areas of study can be approached from a diverse range of other perspectives. The pieces have been chosen to encourage students to think beyond the mainstream and over-represented composers and styles of music, and instead to consider alternative and less well-known types and origins of music. -

In this context, Balkan popular music is contemporary popular folk music produced in the countries of the Balkans and intended for the Balkan markets (specifically, the people in the Western Balkans and diaspora communities). After the global success of “Balkan music” in the world music scene, this term influenced the cultures in the Balkans itself; however, interestingly, in the Balkans themselves “Balkan music” does not only refer to the musical characteristics of this genre—namely, it can also be applied music that derives from the genre of the “newly-composed folk music”, which is well known in the Western Balkans. The most important legacy of “Balkan” world music is the discourse on Balkan stereotypes, hence this article will reveal new aspects of autobalkanism in music. This research starts from several questions: where is “the Balkans” which is mentioned in these songs actually situated; what is the meaning of the term “Balkan” used for the audience from the Balkans; and, what are musical characteristics of the genre called trepfolk? Special focus will be on the post-Yugoslav market in the twenty-first century, with particular examples in Serbian language (as well as Bosnian and Croatian). This track is the beginning of an album of songs whose great hooks belie their rich narrative content. It is surely among Hayman‟s most catchy batches of songs and that‟s saying something. The electric blue-grass band he has assembled gives this record a fuller sound than his last outing with the appropriately named solo project Table For One. Occasional use of horns, uplifting saxophone here, delicate trumpet there, and the presence of guitars now fully back since the electronic experiments of Dead Media and Local Information all up the power but don‟t deaden the wit. -

Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself. -

The Architecture of Popular Songs
Songwriters and song lyrics: architecture, ambiguity and repetition Keith Negus and Pete Astor Pete Astor, Department of Music, University of Westminster, Regent Street, London, W1B 2HW Keith Negus, Department of Music, Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross, London, SE14 6NW Main contact: [email protected] Abstract This article argues for understanding popular songs and songwriting through the metaphor of architecture, an idea we draw from vernacular terms used by songwriters when comprehending and explaining their own creative practice, and which we deploy in response to those who have called for writing about music to use a non-technical vocabulary and make greater use of metaphor. By architecture we mean those recognisable characteristics of songs that exist as enduring qualities regardless of a specific performance, recording or sheet music score. We use this analogy not as a systematic model, but as a device for exploring the intricate ways that words and music are combined and pointing to similarities in the composition of poetry and writing of song lyrics. The art of repetition and play with ambiguity are integral to popular song architectures that endure regardless of the modifications introduced by performers who temporarily inhabit a particular song. *** In this article we argue for an architectural approach to the popular song, a perspective that treats songwriters as architects rather than romantically inspired expressive artists. Our approach implies that listeners are indeed dancing (and thinking) about architecture when responding to popular songs, and it is an awareness of this that informs the practices of songwriters.1 By architecture we mean those recognisable characteristics of songs that exist as enduring qualities regardless of a particular performance, recording or version.
