Coin Finds from the Middle Ages to the Distribution of Norwegian Types Coin, Dated to the Reign of Håkon Norwegian Coin Distribution During the Reign of Håkon Håkonsson Liam Gladden Master’s Thesis in Viking and Medieval Studies 60 Credits Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies Faculty of Humanities University of Oslo November 2018 1 Abstract The goal of this thesis is to develop a method of understanding coin distribution in Norway in order to identify probable locations for mints. This is done by comparing the distribution of English coin finds from the Middle Ages to the distribution of Norwegian types coin, dated to the reign of Håkon Håkonsson. Observations made from analyzing English coin finds would suggest that coins from a specific mint are more likely to be found in the area around the mint. Therefore a greater proportions of coin finds from a specific mint are found in the regions around the mint of origin. Some Norwegian coin types seem to adhere to this trend in coin distribution, however, the distribution of the Norwegian portrait type coin may indicate the presence of a travelling mint in Norway. 2 Preface Through this thesis, I have tried to establish a possible method for interpreting the distribution of Norwegian coin finds from the reign of Håkon Håkonsson in order to locate the probable locations of mints in 13th century Norway. The fact that this thesis has been completed is due in large to the support and guidance I have received from Svein H. Gullbekk over the last year. Svein’s support helped me to develop new ideas in a field of study I had previously been unfamiliar with. During the reign of Håkon Håkonsson, a variety of coin types were produced and used in circulation. These coins have been excavated at various church sites dating to the medieval period across Norway. I believe that these coin types can be used to determine the location of Norwegian mints. In England, the distribution of coins have been studied by numismatists like, Michael Metcalf, Rory Naismith and J. L. Bolton.1 In the English context, coins have been unearthed with the location of the place of origin already known due to the presence of the name of the mint place on the surface of the coin. The English evidence for coin finds is prolific, especially in the case of single coin finds. During the last decades metal detectors have been used to find thousands, if not tens of thousands, of coins that provide scholars with a basis for the analysis of coin circulation. Even though metal detecting finds from Norway are much less frequent in comparison to those found in England, single finds from Norwegian medieval churches provide more than 10,000 finds from the period between the years 1180 and 1320.2 The evidence for single finds and hoards from secular and ecclesiastical contexts are, of course, different in both their nature and their scope. Som selvstendig domstol må dagens bemanning og arbeidsoppgaver i Sandnessjøen opprettholdes, der vi beholder eget budsjett og egen rapportering av saksbehandlingstid, samt at vi beholder lokalene i Sandnessjøen og Mosjøen. Det må også ansettes en fast utnevnt embetsdommer med bo- og kontorsted i Sandnessjøen. Videre må sorenskriveren i Rana tingrett delta i dømmende virksomhet og ledelse i Alstahaug tingrett i samme omfang og med samme tilstedeværelse som i Rana tingrett. Nitrogen deposition has been roughly constant during the past 20 years, with only a minor decrease in the late 1990s. The resulting changes in the chemistry of small lakes have been followed by national monitoring programmes initiated in the 1980s in Finland (163 lakes), Norway (100 lakes) and Sweden (81 lakes). These lakes are partly a subset from the survey of 5690 lakes in the Northern European lake survey of 1995. Trend analyses on data for the period 1990-1999 show that the non-marine sulphate concentrations in lakes have decreased significantly in 69% of the monitored lakes. Changes were largest in lakes with the highest mean concentrations. Nitrate concentrations, on the other hand, were generally low and showed no systematic changes. Concentrations of non-marine base cations decreased in 26% of the lakes, most probably an ionic-strength effect due to the lower concentrations of mobile strong-acid anions. Acid neutralising capacity increased in 32% of the lakes.

    THE VIKINGS IN SCOTLAND AND IRELAND IN THE NINTH CENTURY - DONNCHADH Ó CORRÁIN 1998 ABSTRACT: This study attempts to provide a new framework for ninth-century Irish and Scottish history. Viking Scotland, known as Lothlend, Laithlinn, Lochlainn and comprising the Northern and Western Isles and parts of the mainland, especia lly Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness, was settled by Norwegian Vikings in the early ninth century. By the mid-century it was ruled by an effective royal dyna sty that was not connected to Norwegian Vestfold. In the second half of the cent ury it made Dublin its headquarters, engaged in warfare with Irish kings, contro lled most Viking activity in Ireland, and imposed its overlordship and its tribu te on Pictland and Strathclyde. When expelled from Dublin in 902 it returned to Scotland and from there it conquered York and re-founded the kingdom of Dublin i n 917. Use of road transport is not possible in many areas in the region because of the fjords and islands. This means that the public supply of both passenger and freight transport is of vital importance for the population in this region. What is a fair allocation of available public funding for ferry and shipping services for the people of Helgeland? The county administration in Nordland has defined the following list of priorities: 1. Transport of school children 2. Industry transport needs 3. Commuting to work and school 4. Serving islands and areas with no alternatives 5. Small societies without roads, in order to protect the coastal culture 2 Operators of the seaborne transport There are three operators that have transport contracts of public seaborne traffic at Helgeland. The biggest company is Helgelandske which operates 18 of the 34 seaborne routes. Torghatten Nord operates 9 and Torghatten trafikkselskap operates 7 of the public ferry and ship routes.
