Rev. Shanna Steitz What Do You Do Senior Minister Rev. Ryan Motter With an Idea? Associate Minister a new sermon series Rev. Suzanne Motter Children’s Minister based on the book by Kobi Yamada

Amy Fisher Don’t discount the story of Jonah as one Youth Director just for children. Nor should we discount this book from Kobi Yamada because it Jennifer Gilbert is illustrated and only has words on half Nursery Supervisor the pages. Both stories are about our relationships with God, the choices we make, and our obedience to our callings Levon Weaver Business Administrator to live out the big Idea of God, aka the September 10 Gospel - the Good News. These stories Step one - Act Like It Doesn’t Belong to You? are Idea stories. Good news stories. Jonah 1 Kae Keller Executive Assistant Both stories show us the progression most of us take in following God’s Idea: September 17 Kevin Freeman ignoring or running away from the Idea, Step Two - Make Friends With It? Building Supervisor making friends with it, sharing it with Jonah 2 others, finally, we have the opportunity to change the world. We’ll find that it is this Will Evans last step where Jonah and the book take September 24 Maintenance different paths. If we give these stories Step Three - Share It With Others the opportunity, they can hold a mirror up Jonah 3 to our own progression of living out God’s Jonathon Antle big Idea, and which paths we tend to take. Organist October 1 In the picture book, the illustrations by Step 4 - Change the World John Stafford Mae Besom begin in mostly black and Jonah 4 Choir Director white, except for the Idea which is gold. But once the story reaches its climax, the pictures explode into full color. That Tim Whitmer tends to be true not just in illustrated Pianist picture books but in real life “adulting” as well. When we say yes to what god is doing and inviting us to be a part of, our lives and our Community might just burst into full color... and change the world. 4601(816) Main 561-6531 Street Kansas City, MO 64112 www. community-christian.org What I Coming Up at Community Every Sunday At Community 8:30 am Worship Service in Bonfils Chapel really want 9:30 am Education Hour 9:30 am Youth Group in the Youth Room to say . . . 10:30 am Worship Service in the Sanctuary 11:30 am Coffee Fellowship

There is so much to talk about and pray about right now. Sunday, September 10 If you are like me, it can be overwhelming and you can feel 11:45 am Elders’ Meeting in the Jenkins Room pretty helpless. I was reading a quote from my friend and colleague, Vy Nguyen, Executive Director of Week of Monday, September 11 Compassion, the relief, refugee and development partner of our denomination who said, “Week of Compassion can’t 6:30 pm Astrologers Meeting in Centennial Hall afford to have tunnel-vision.” It went on to describe flood and fires and I thought of the talks of war. And in that Tuesday, September 12 moment, I realized - I had tunnel vision. I was focusing 9:30 am Staff Meeting on things that I could fix and problems I could solve: the 8:00 pm AA Meeting in Bonfils Chapel graffiti art on our building; the frustrating and unexpected complication discovered by our roofers; tweaks to our Wednesday, September 13 website; hymn selection; Advent planning. These are things 7:00 pm Choir Practice that mostly fit on my desk - tangible things; and yet, my heart was still feeling like I needed to do something. I had Thursday, September 14 friends and colleagues delivering clean up buckets and coordinating evacuees from flood and fire - Gospel work. 10:00 am Chair Yoga in the Narthex Was this really the Gospel work God needed from me 7:00 am Alpha Group at the Muiller Residence today? Friday, September 15 7:00 pm The next dayR ev. Ryan’s dad, Chuck Motter, had AA Meeting in Bonfils Chapel a massive stroke. After being at the hospital with the Motters, I went and picked up their 22-month-old Lydia. My 10-year-old Audrey and I sat on the sidewalk with Lydia and scribbled with sidewalk chalk. Suddenly, I felt it - literally. The Gospel work God needed me to do today If you’re interested in donating involved sidewalk chalk - literally. a meal to help the Weaver family in this time of blessing, Because sometimes, on some days, when everyting seems visit like a lot, it's the little things..the ordinary things...the stuff https://www.mealtrain.com/ that each of us can do. Sometimes the biggest heart opening Gospel work is in the things that seem almost insignificant. trains/r391wd

It’s as our guest preacher, Mike Lehman said last week (I’m A shower will be held on paraphrasing from memory so forgive me), “Sometimes the Sunday, October 29 following only circle of influence you can have is the three feet that a single combined service surrounds you.” And today, that three feet was sidewalk at 10:30 am. chalk. It seemed to matter to a small girl who had no idea Watch our Facebook page for what her family was dealing with. It mattered to me because details! it focused my mind on what was mine to do - in that moment. Sidewalk chalk was mine to do. I can’t yet go to Houston. I can’t call up Mother Nature and speak, “Peace, be still” to the raging winds. I can’t fix a brain injury. Heck, I can’t even help the dang Royals. PRAYER CONCERNS What Gospel work is within your three feet? What can you do today? In this moment? To bring a little Good News? To New This Week: bring a little hope? To share a little light? Chuck Motter, father of Rev. Ryan Motter Maybe it’s sidewalk chalk. Maybe that’s your Gospel work today. Say: The scripture reading today is Jonah 1 (CEB) Listen for God to speak: The Lord’s word came to Jonah, “Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their evil has come to my attention.” So Jonah got up—to flee to Tarshish from the Lord! He found a ship headed for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went aboard to go with them, away from the Lord. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, so that there was a great storm; the ship looked like it might be broken to pieces. The sailors were terrified, and each one cried out to his god…. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the vessel to lie down and was deep in sleep. The ship’s officer came and said to him, “How can you possibly be sleeping so deeply? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps the god will give some thought to us so that we won’t perish.” Meanwhile, the sailors said to each other, “Come on, let’s cast lots so that we might learn who is to blame for this evil that’s happening to us.” They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they said to him, “Tell us, since you’re the cause of this evil happening to us: What do you do and where are you from? What’s your country and of what people are you?” He said to them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, the God of heaven—who made the sea and the dry land.”

OVER -> Then the men were terrified and said to him, “What have you done?” (The men knew that Jonah was fleeing from the Lord, because he had told them.) They said to him, “What will we do about you so that the sea will become calm around us?” (The sea was continuing to rage.) He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea! Then the sea will become calm around you. I know it’s my fault that this great storm has come upon you.” The men rowed to reach dry land, but they couldn’t manage it because the sea continued to rage against them. So they called on the Lord, saying, “Please, Lord, don’t let us perish on account of this man’s life, and don’t blame us for innocent blood! You are the Lord: whatever you want, you can do.” Then they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased its raging. The men worshipped the Lord with a profound reverence; they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made solemn promises. Meanwhile, the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights. Reader: The Word of God for the people of God. Community: Thanks be to God. SERVER ASSIGNMENTS MONITOR: Pam Holloway
