Carlo Guelfi Baritone Carlo Guelfi Baritone Born in Rome, Carlo Guelfi studies singing with his uncle on father side, Maestro Renato Guelfi. He wins Adriano Pertile Competition. Since then, his extraordinary and brilliant career begins. Indeed, he has been collaborating with the major theatres and music institutions across the globe, until he has become the greatest baritone of his generation. Thanks to the dark timbre of his voice, the noble manner in which he delivers the voice, his renowned diction, the infinite ease of his legato singing, the skilful use of the half-voice, combined with his remarkable stage presence, he has risen to international prominence as the interpreter of reference of Verdi’s and the verista repertoire.     Biography: Fabio Armiliato Internationally renewed tenor Fabio Armiliato is acclaimed by the public thanks to his unique vocal style, his impressive upper register and his dramatic abilities and charisma that infuses in his characters. He made his opera debut as Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra in his hometown Genoa, where he graduated at the Conservatory Niccolo Paganini, after which his career set off leading him to address many important roles for his register in the most prestigious theatres in the world. Armiliato is a refined interpreter of Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca with more than 150 performances of the title, he has been acclaimed in this role in the most prestigious Opera Houses including La Scala in Milan, conducted by Lorin Maazel, and the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in London under the baton of Antonio Pappano in 2006.

This co-production with the Royal Opera House is a classic of the ‘verismo movement’ and presents a slice of life from the small villages of Southern Italy, laying bare the raw heart of each story – ordinary people, driven by betrayal, passion, jealousy and revenge, emotions stretched to the limits. Although a different composer wrote each opera, it has been a long-standing tradition that they are performed together. In this production, Michieletto implies that both happen in the same town on the same night and are inextricably linked. Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini has wanted to do Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci for some time. “I think audiences are going to love this new production. These two operas are tremendously powerful and the cast is simply brilliant. “In particular, it is a treat to see Diego Torre perform the two challenging roles on the one night and we’re thrilled that Dragana Radakovic has returned to Australia after her fantastic performance in Handa Opera on the Harbour - Turandot. He made his professional debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile. More recent engagements have included Manrico in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the title role of Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Calaf in Turandot at Turin’s Teatro Regio, and Alfredo in La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera. Herald Sun, 21 February 1996 For music lovers, it is a rare treat to come across a singer whose distinctive voice is instantly and indelibly lodged in one's memory, an actor whose presence on stage breathes fresh life into tired characters, a man whose vision and in- tegrity set him apart from the rest. Such an artist is José Cura. 1978 2018 Born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, on 5 December 1962, José Cura's musical talent matured quickly: at 12 he was playing guitar under Juan di Lorenzo's guidance; at 15 he debuted as a choral director; and at 16 he began studies in composition with Carlos Castro and piano with Zulma Cabrera. In 1982, he ente- !1 red the Escuela Superior de Arte de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario to continue his musical education; the following year he became assistant conductor for the university choir. At 21, he won a grant to study at Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. Cura continued to sing in the school chorus while focu- sing on composition and conducting until 1988, when he began working with Horacio Amauri to develop his singing technique. 1991 – 1993 Determined to make a career in opera, José Cura moved to Italy in 1991. In Milan, he met tenor Vittorio Terranova, under who’s authority Cura polished his Italian singing style. In February 1992 he made his debut in Verona as the Father in Henze's Po- llicino and as Principe Mediano in Paolo Arca’s La gatta bianca, two children’s operas.

    THURSDAY 30 NOVEMBER 2017 CAST AMENDMENT PAGLIACCI (Ruggero Leoncavallo) Wednesday 6 December 2017 at 12pm and Saturday 9 December 2017 at 7.30pm Due to a family emergency, Italian tenor Fabio Sartori has had to withdraw from the role of Canio in Pagliacci on 6 December and on 9 December. The role will now be sung by American tenor Bryan Hymel, who makes his debut in the role on 2 December, and who also makes his role debut as Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana). Bryan Hymel made his Royal Opera debut in 2010 as Don José (Carmen) and has since sung Prince (Rusalka), Aeneas (Les Troyens), the title role of Robert le diable, Henri (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Don José and Don Carlo for the Company. Earlier in the 2017/18 Season he returned to sing Henri for The Royal Opera. Recent engagements elsewhere include Don José, Alfredo Germont (La traviata) and Faust (La Damnation de Faust) for Paris Opéra, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) for La Scala, Milan, Arnold (Guillaume Tell) and Rodolfo (La bohème) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) for Deutsche Oper Berlin. The rest of the cast remains the same with British baritone Simon Keenlyside as Tonio, Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio as Nedda, Polish baritone Andrzej Filończyk as Silvio and Portuguese tenor Luis Gomez as Beppe.
