From the cloying J-pop opening, it's clear that this series' sole aim is to be a good-natured farce, Excel Saga: v. 2 that revolves around a main character who, on the surface is not much different from any other anime heroine. However, the key difference between Excel and all those who preceded her is Excel Saga: v. 2 Excel is completely and utterly insane and considers it her goal to to conquer the city of F. This gives the series a clear and ingenious jumping off point as it encounters Martian princesses, afro-wearing action heroes, mysterious governmental agencies, space butlers, deranged comic book authors, annoying roommates, and removable moustaches, among other things. Excel also dies quite often, especially in the first episode, and she is being resurrected several times by The Great Will of the Macrocosm. Menchi is her emergency food supply, even though she luckily never actually eats her. She also uses a false name, Hanako Dosukoi, a few times. Her actual name has not yet been revealed. Excel is hyperactive and energetic, and is known to talk so fast and inconsistent that people around her find her difficult to understand, an example being that even though Il Palazzo admires her energy, he states that he has no idea what she's talking about most of the time. One notable characteristic of Excel is that she often talks in third person, even when speaking about Excel Saga: v. 2. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

The essence of my submission is simple: the publication may be trashy and tasteless, but it is not harmful to society if restricted to an adult audience. While it depicts activities that fall within the statutory definition of “objectionable,” it does so in the context of outrageous parody. The manner of depiction therefore nullifies any potential for harm. My submission begins with a brief summary of the publication’s background and my reasons for seek- ing a review of its classification. I then consider the publication in light of s3 of the Act, focussing particularly upon the question of how a parody should be interpreted. 2 Background to the Publication 2.1 Genesis Puni Puni Poemy is a two-episode spin-off from the popular TV anime Excel Saga. Famous for its bizarre storyline and total lack of respect for convention, Excel Saga has been described as “meta- anime” due to its frequent humorous references to other series. The series is available in New Zealand with an M rating: this includes the notorious finale,´ episode 26, which was released direct to video in Japan and went well beyond what Japanese television censorship would have allowed. Puni Puni Poemy began as a joke in episode 17 of Excel Saga, when one of the minor characters was shown working on it in the belief that a career in animation is a path to wealth and fame (a misappre- hension the main characters are quick to dispel).
