The genus Taurocletodes is removed from its synonymy with Parepactophanes Kunz, 1935 and re-instated as a valid genus, accommodating the type species T. dubius (Noodt, 1958) comb. nov. and T. tumenae sp. nov. Both genera can be differentiated by major differences in the segmentation of P1–P3 endopods, the absence/presence of penicillate setae on P1 endopod, the number of outer spines on P2–P4 exp-3, the armature of P2–P4 endopods and the sexual dimorphism of P2 endopod and P3 exopod. T. tumenae sp. nov. and T. dubius are morphologically very similar, differing in morphometric characters related to the endopodal segmentation of P1 and P4, and armature of the male P5. The controversial taxonomic status of Pare- pactophanes and Taurocletodes within the family Canthocamptidae is discussed. -

The relative importance of Ostracodology - the science that studies Ostracoda - in Germany is further highlighted by well-known names such as G.W. Müller, Klie, Triebel and Helmdach, and others who stand for the long tradition of research on Ostracoda in Germany. During our symposium in Berlin more than 150 participants from 36 countries will meet to discuss all aspects of living and fossil Ostracoda. Harbach3 Abstract Background: Diseases caused by mosquito-borne pathogens remain an important source of morbidity and mortality in Bangladesh. To better control the vectors that transmit the agents of disease, and hence the diseases they cause, and to appreciate the diversity of the family Culicidae, it is important to have an up-to-date list of the species present in the country. Original records were collected from a literature review to compile a list of the species recorded in Bangladesh. Results: Records for 123 species were collected, although some species had only a single record. This is an increase of ten species over the most recent complete list, compiled nearly 30 years ago. Collection records of three additional species are included here: Anopheles pseudowillmori, Armigeres malayi and Mimomyia luzonensis. Conclusions: While this work constitutes the most complete list of mosquito species collected in Bangladesh, further work is needed to refine this list and understand the distributions of those species within the country. Improved morphological and molecular methods of identification will allow the refinement of this list in years to come. Memoires de Biospeologie, Tome XXV, 1998, p. 25-33. 25 TWO INTERESTING SPECIES OF THE GENUS ELAPHOIDELLA CHAPPUIS, 1929 (CRUSTACEA, COPEPODA) FROM BALKAN PENINSULA by Tomislav KARANOVIC* I - INTRODUCTION CHAPPUIS (1929) established the genus Elaphoidella, with E. elaphoides (Chappuis, 1924), as a type species. He separated new genus from the genus Cantkocamptus, and at that time genus Elaphoidella counted twenty-five species and subspecies. In the next few decades genus Elaphoidella rapidly enlarges, mostly because of the great number of subterranean species. Up to 1948, fifty-three species were known, and LANG (1948) classified them into ten groups, mainly on the basis of the shape of the bizarre transformed spines on male's Exp3P4. PETKOVSKI and BRANCELJ (1988) added one new (eleventh) group. The only problem with classification into groups is necessity of both sexes, while many species are described and known just as one sex (mostly female). One unsuccessful attempt of revision of the genus Elaphoidella was made by APOSTOLOV (1985). Maybe the most detailed critical annotation of that revision is given by REID (1990). -

Karanovic Western Australian Museum, Locked Bag 49, Welshpool DC, Western Australia 6986, Australia E-mail: [email protected] Abstract - Two new species of the genus Parastenocaris Kessler, 1913 are described from Australian subterranean waters, both based upon males and females. Parastenocaris eberhardi sp. novo has been found in two small caves in southwestern Western Australia. It belongs to the "minuta"-group of species, having five large spinules at base of the fourth leg endopod in male. The integumental window pattern of P. eberhardi is the same as for the first reported Australian representative (P. solitaria), which helps to establish its affinities too, since only females of the latter species were described. Parastenocaris eberhardi has a clear Eastern Gondwana connection, like many other Australian copepods of freshwater origins. Parastenocaris kimberleyensis sp. novo is described from a single water-monitoring bore in the Kimberley district, northeastern Western Australia. It belongs to the "brevipes"-group of species, for which a key to world species is given. The present state of systematics within the family Parastenocarididae is briefly discussed. Tomberlin The association of olfactory information with a resource is broadly known as olfactory-based associative learning. From an ecological perspective, associative learning can reduce search time for resources and fine tune responses to changing biotic and abiotic factors in a variable environment, which in mosquitoes has implications for pathogen transmission and vector control strategies. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the ability for olfactory-based associative learning across the major life history domains of mosquitoes. Six different experiments comprise this dissertation. The first was to evaluate the response of mosquitoes following conditioning to 5, 10 or 50% sucrose concentrations with individual level mosquito conditioning and testing and introduction of statistical analysis with binary logistic regression. -

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).
