TUESDAY AWARDS LUNCHEON: Come join us and recognize the hard work of your peers. Advance registration required.

WEDNESDAY EVENING RECEPTION: This event will be unlike anything you have ever experienced! Set in the grand lobby of the Peabody Opera House, the evening will include an amazing dinner as well as an entertaining and interactive show. The Peabody Opera House first opened in 1934 and in 2011 underwent a $100 million renovation to restore it to its former glory. The evening will start with cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres in one of the large lounges. Dinner will then be served in the spectacularly beautiful Grand lobby. Throughout the evening, tours of this amazing building highlighting its history and architecture will be offered. The dinner buffet will be prepared by one of the best resturant groups in St. Louis. There will be several amazing selections of starters, main courses, and sides. Dinner will be followed by dessert.

In addition to enjoying the building, the evening’s true entertainment will be the celebration of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding during dinner. This is interactive theater where guests are more than a member of the audience; they are a member of the family. The fun starts with the ceremony and continues with the reception. With creative, warm, and hilarious improvisation, Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding is a wonderfuly fun event that is truly one of a kind.

SPOUSE/COMPANION TOURS (MONDAY): Begin the day at Missouri Botanical Garden. Stroll through this beautiful 79-acre National Historic Landmark where you will see the country’s largest Japanese Garden, an English Woodland Garden, Chinese Garden and the Rose Garden displaying 200 varieties of roses. Walk through the Temperate House containing plants of that region and the Climatron, which contains a rain forest. Also located at the gardens is the Kemper Center for Home Gardening. This is the only home gardening center of its kind in the United States.

Enjoy a delicious seasonally selected lunch along with a private cooking demonstration at the L’École Culinaire, a premier cooking school, located in the suburb of Ladue.

After your lunch and cooking demonstration, it’s on to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, known to locals as the New Cathedral. Built in 1907 this is one of only 40 basilicas in the United States. Known for its Byzantine interior, this awe-inspiring landmark contains one of the largest collections of mosaics in the world. Created by 20 different

artists and covering 84,000 sq. ft., the Cathedral interior is lined with 41.5 million pieces of glass tesserae employing over 8,000 shades of color. The magnificent mosaic work was begun in 1912 and completed in 1988 by the Ravenna Mosaic Co. The marble in the Cathedral comes from nearly every marble center in the world—over 70 different types are found in the sanctuary alone.

SPOUSE/COMPANION TOURS (TUESDAY): Beginning Tuesday’s tour is a visit to our nation’s tallest monument, The Gateway Arch, the soaring symbol of the Gateway to the West. It towers 630 feet above the banks of the Mississippi River and is part of the $30 million Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. While visiting the Arch you will have a choice between two experiences; (1) you can choose to ride the tram to the top of the Arch, or (2) view the movie on the construction of the Arch.

Lunch will be served at Soulard neighborhood favorite, Franco, winner of the Riverfront Time’s Best French Restaurant. The menu is built around locally grown produce and locally raised meats, with an emphasis on freshness and seasonal ingredients.

Next stop on your tour is the world famous Anheuser-Busch Brewery, the world’s largest brewer of beer. The brewery is situated in a 100- acre complex of over 71 red brick structures, several of which are National Historic Landmarks. Enjoy a one-and-a-half hour private tour that includes the beechwood aging cellars, the historic Brew House, and the Bevo packaging plant. A film about the brewing process and a close-up view of the famous Budweiser Clydesdales are highlights of the tour, along with everyone’s favorite, a stop in the hospitality room for a sampling of some Anheuser-Busch products.

"Preparation of Transformer Specifications"

-- Technical Presentation -- Thursday, October 24, 2013

by Krishnamurthy Vijayan and Vallamkonda Sankar

1. Abstract

This tutorial will assist end-users and consultants in preparation of transformer specifications to procure economical and reliable transformers which meet system and operational needs. By knowing the implications of transformer parameters on operation and on cost, functional specification can be prepared. Some topics covered in the tutorial are: ratings, voltages, transformer types, vector groups, loss capitalization, over-excitation, insulation levels, cooling types, sound levels, tap range, taps in HV or in LV, operation of taps to compensate input voltage fluctuations or to compensate for regulation, impedance, overloads, short-circuits, accessories, parallel operation, alternative solutions etc.

By knowing the usefulness and limitations of standards (IEEE C57.12.00, CSA C-88, IEC 60076-1 etc.), their reference in the specification can be better understood. Risks and limitations when the standards are used solely as specifications and when the transformer design engineers are considered as system engineers are elaborated.

Knowledge of available materials and accessories used in transformers will help further to evolve a specification that would help the end user. The tutorial provides some of this information.

2. Learning Objectives

This tutorial will help transformer personnel to learn/familiarize the following:

• Work towards evolving a functional specification. • Minimize ambiguity in the transformer specification to get a satisfactory product. • Understand the significance of capitalization cost. • Understand the importance of information to be included in the specifications such that user requirements are understood and fully met by bidders. • Understand the usefulness and limitations of IEEE, IEC and CSA standards. • Gain knowledge on factors that influence MVA rating, number of phases, winding connections, vector groups etc. • Understand the consequence of specifying different insulation levels with reference to standards • Avoid requirements in specification that are ambiguous or that will add cost with no benefit to the user. • Establish a quote process beneficial to users and manufacturers. • Effective tender review and design review meetings. • Use of globalization to get maximum benefits. • To encourage innovations.

page 1 of 2 3. Learning Outcomes

Attendees will gain understanding of the following by attending this tutorial.

• Achieve improved team work between manufacturer and user by understanding and appreciating each other’s efforts. • Develop a functional specification. • Procure energy efficient transformers with minimum capitalized cost. • Determine major parameters like ratings, insulation levels, impedance, capitalization of losses, sound levels without ambiguities. • Decide winding connections (wye, delta etc.) and vector groups (Yy, Yd, Dy, etc.) to reap maximum benefits and to avoid design complications. • Knowledge for selection of type of taps and their location (in HV or in LV, in wye winding, in delta winding etc.). • Understand influences of taps on short-circuit stresses and on dielectric stresses. • Knowledge for deciding the location of the taps (in input winding or in output winding) and their operation for constant flux taps or variable flux taps or combined voltage variation taps. • Specify requirements for parallel operation. • Information to be included on the data sheets and on the nameplate. • Tests to be specified. • Salient precautions in transport and during the installation.

"Effects of DC Currents on Transformers Under Service Conditions"

-- Technical Presentation -- Thursday, October 24, 2013

by Alfons Schrammel and Ron Sharp

1. Abstract

In today’s current climate, environmental compliance requires almost noiseless transformer designs. There is also a drive to utilize transformers with low core losses in order to satisfy the aim of minimized carbon dioxide related greenhouse gasses.

In order to achieve these objectives, the most optimal solution is the use of highly efficient grain oriented electrical core steel and the application of the most advanced core stacking techniques. In addition, transformer cores are usually operated at low flux densities and relatively low excitation currents.

However, recent investigations into transformers that have unusually high noise levels in service, when compared to the values which were measured during factory acceptance testing, have revealed that as a result of the techniques employed above, low DC currents may be the source of this phenomenon.

Presently, the origins of low DC currents have not been fully investigated, but the following sources have been identified: power electronics from large drives or wind farms, railroad or subway systems and galvanic corrosion protection of pipelines. There is even the possibility that system transient behavior or frequent energization and de-energization of transformers in networks may also contribute to low DC currents and as a result unusually high noise levels in service.

In order to combat this phenomenon, there are currently two possibilities, namely; the use of mitigation techniques which reduce or prevent low DC currents from impacting on the transformer, or by ensuring that the transformer design is less susceptible to low DC currents.

This tutorial will discuss the possible sources of low DC currents, its effect on transformers in service and the ways in which both the manufacturer and end user can deal with this phenomenon.

page 1 of 2 2. Learning Objectives

This tutorial will help individuals involved with transformers to:

• Recognize the changing environment for transformers in transmission systems regarding disturbances. • Understand the impact of low magnitude DC currents on the performance of transformers. • Accept the need to explore the current conditions in their transmission system and the future trends. • Specify any unusual system conditions not covered by international standards. • Investigate possible mitigation solutions.

3. Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this tutorial session, participants will gain an understanding and will then be enabled to:

• Evaluate the impact of low magnitude DC currents in their area of responsibility. • Understand the influence of design parameters on the susceptibility to low magnitude DC currents. • Adapt acceptance test requirements in the specification for future projects if necessary. • Introduce the newest mitigation technologies in up-coming projects.
