Round 1| Cadwell Park | 29th and 30th August 2020

Words : Russ Gardner | NG Road Racing Media Officer Images : EDP Photo News | www.edpphoto.co.uk www.ngroadracing.org Web Info : www.ngroadracing.org Cadwell is so much more than just “The Mountain”….. Round one of the NG series has us at Cadwell Park…..it’s the end of August and finally we get to stage round one of the 2020 season. As everyone knows life and racing this year have been ravaged by COVID-19. So we a really pleased that after a test weekend here at Cadwell Park in mid-July as a toe-in- the-water test, we have been given the green-light to go race meeting. This is though, with a whole raft of restrictions for circuit, organisers and riders alike. It is a total non-spectator event….. but at least we can get some racing miles under our belt. As you will have seen on social media many riders have been doing track days over the last month or so to get sharp, but as we all know there is no substitute for track time at race speed with you fellow riders and rivals trying to nip up the inside at a given corner or try and force a block pass!! It is so great to see that just about all the grids are full and everyone is keen to get back out there. With no 2020 form book it’s difficult to pin point any race winning contenders…… (but that has never stopped me in the past !). In the 250 GP class keep and eye on Chris Moore, he is a demon at Cadwell but Thomas Lawlor and Lee Bamber will not be too far away. It’s great to see former 125GP champ Gavin Mills back on the grids, and to be honest he is looking like the pick of the field. The 600’s as ever will be tough to win with Aaron Ridewood, Owen Hunt, Simon Bastable, Adam Sherriff and the racing Welch brothers James and Luke all capable of taking the flag first. Serial NG Open winner over recent seasons Josh Day is stepping to one side for 2020, mainly to concentrate on retaining his BSB Ducati Tri-Options National title, but also helping son Harrison in his Mini moto racing. In his absence keep an eye on Max Symonds who steps up from many years on a 600 to a BMW S1000RR, also more former 600 winners Sean Montgomery on his ZX10 and Ricky Elder on an R1. Dave Mackay who is now on a True Heroes Racing GSXR 1000 Suzuki cannot be discounted either. With great grids across the meeting from Mini and Super Twins, through the Sound of Thunder, Desmo Dues and the exciting new Formula Prostock classes that have added a Battle of the Twins style class to run with their existing line-up that also still has the frantic Suzuki Bandit challenge, it looks like fun will be had out on track……

Cadwell Park is fondly nicknamed the 2.2 mile 'mini-Nürburgring', and has hosted racing for over 85 years. It's twisty and undulating nature, winding through open park and woodland, has marked it out as one of the best circuits in the country. The circuit is one of the most popular destinations on the British Superbike calendar for both riders and spectators, with the infamous 'Mountain' section, which riders usually tackle airborne, providing a particular challenge. The track is so much more than just the mountain. Every corner demands respect, and the final section of the lap under the trees can often be the downfall of many as it is very tight and often stays damp under the trees after rain !!…Hopefully that will not be an issue in early Summer (…..fingers crossed)

Josh Day holds the outright NG lap record here, set in June 2019, circulating in 1 min 30.25sec on his ZX10R Kawasaki, which equates to an average of 86.95ph.

Adding extra interest to the weekend NG Road Racing are again running the British National series for 125cc and 250cc GP machinery. This is the only place in the UK that you will see these ex-GP machines racing for a full British Championship title backed by the ACU (The sports governing body). We also have the Ducati Desmo Due Series and Formula Prostocks runners .

Next Round: Castle Combe | 29th and 27th September.

and Sportstape Practitioner.

I am so pleased to be working again with NG Racing again this season. For those of you who don’t yet know me my background in racing started back in the late 80’s I marshalled for many clubs and have a passion for racing.

I trained as a Remedial Sports Therapist, then trained to use Sportstape and finally as a Pilates instructor and have never looked back. I am proud to say I am part of the physio team at the TT and have been for the last 5 years. I also have a n understanding of how racers need to be out on track doing what they love.

So how much does it cost? - I work on donations there is no fixed amount that you have to pay so treatment will not cost you a fortune. All the donations go into my racing kitty – to get me to the next meeting and pay for necessities like Sportstape.

How I can help you? Good lap times are down to many factors, but good bike preparation is fairly high up there. You all know that you would never dream of putting your bike out on track without preparing it well first. The same goes for your body! Being able to comfortably move on the bike or sidecar will reduce your lap times. I can help you achieve this. Why not ask some of the riders that I have helped out over the past seasons.

I have a Facebook page NG Racing in Safe Hands – I always upload where I am set up at each meeting. Any of the Race office staff will also be able to point you in my direction. If you have any questions before the meeting, please message me via Facebook. I am a member of NGRRC Motorbike and Sidecar Racing Facebook group under Sue Hunt LSSM. If you need to book in for any meeting it is easiest to message me via the Facebook page or send me a text on 07767837585.

Desmo Due Racing 2020

As the Desmo Due series enters its 16th season and its 5th year with NGRRC it is again supported by Dunlop tyres who for 2020 and 2021 will be supplying at favourable prices through DTR a new dry track control tyre in the form of the Sportsmart TT while for the wet the tyres are again the Dunlop KR189 front and KR389 rear.

Since last year’s four page article in UK Clubsport magazine (Thanks Zoe) there has been an increased interest in the series which should see an increase in grid sizes for the coming season with over 30 riders signed up for the series many of whom are Ex racers who have decided to give racing another go.

Although a few riders have left the series there will be quite a few new names on the grid some have built their own race bikes while others will be on bikes that have been raced previously although most will look a little different as each owner adds their personnel touch. Both the reigning champions have registered for the 2020 season as have the top 3 championship finishers from each class.

The format for the series remains the same, there are two Classes, one for the later 618cc Fuel injected bikes such as the 620 Sport and the 620 Monster, these fall into Class A which has the restrictions of no engine tuning with a 65 bhp maximum limit and a minimum weight of 150 kg

Class B is aimed at the newcomers to racing or those returning to racing after a long lay off although they can choose to enter Class A if they wish to. Class B is made up of the 600 Supersport and 600 Monster Carburettor bikes with a capacity of 583cc and again no engine tuning so there is a maximum power limit of 53 bhp and a minimum weight of 154 kg .

With these sort of power levels and tyres to suit, both classes run without tyre warmers which takes the guess work out of trying to gauge how much heat is in your tyres after been held in the assembly area or after a lengthy delay.
