I felt immediately that it fit our character perfectly.” The Taschens are German publishers of books on art, architecture and erotica, and have published a book by Barbara-Ann Campbell-Lange in 1999 titled “John Lautner” which increased appreciation of an architect who was one of the early apprentices of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s. The originality and design ability of Lautner received rare praise from the master who seldom acknowledged the work of the former apprentices. Lautner himself—a curmudgeonly, highly inventive designer of homes as well as the influential if not “infamous” Googies Coffee House, now defunct, on the Sunset strip—wed technological inno- vation to a poetic understanding of site. He was almost forgotten when he died in 1994 at 83. His work expressed the nature of mate- rials and most often his structures were organic abstractions in con- crete, often on spectacular sites in California and in Mexico where the swooping colossus of Acapulco, the Arango house, emerges from its perch on a mountainside overlooking the sea. Leonard Malin, the original client, was an aerospace engi- neer who, at 27, left his job to help build the Lautner design. “Most people work an entire lifetime to buy the home of their dreams. I said, the heck with that, I’ll build the home of my dreams and pay for it the rest of my life.” Impressed with a nearby Lautner house, he trusted Lautner’s design for a difficult site, a property that went straight up 100 feet. The Chemosphere The design was a 2200 sq. ft. octagonal pod, made of curved lami- nated wood beams tied at the center to a steel compression ring. The house perched on a column five feet in diameter, anchored into solid bedrock and requiring a funicular to reach it. The construction cost was $140,000 and much was subsidized by sponsoring companies, Southern California Gas and Chem Seal Corporation who furnished experimental epoxies, coating and resins. Main St., Orange To the Community Development Department: As an architect and historian, I would like to state my concerns about the Historic Resources Assessment of 363 Main St., Orange, prepared by LSA (July 2020.) This report is insufficient for making planning decisions about this office building. The report’s conclusions that “the City may reach a finding of No Impact regarding historic‐period built environment resources. No mitigation measures are recommended for historic‐period built environment resources” (p. 24) are not proven by its evidence. This report contains many historical inaccuracies, leading to its misleading conclusion about the building’s significance. I would recommend that the city have a peer review performed by an independent expert selected by the city from a list of qualified and certified architectural historical professionals. I reach this conclusion as a historian. I have published twenty books on twentieth century architectural history. Many of these books are on Modern architecture, especially in Southern California. Johnson, Jr. met Frank Lloyd Wright and hired him to design his company’s new office building, Johnson’s grandson Fisk and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation have announced a 99-year loan agreement between SC Johnson and the Foundation for 60 artifacts from the Foundation’s archives. The loan grew out of discussions after the Foundation applied for a grant from the SC Johnson Fund for a fire suppression system for the archives at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona and explored ways to raise money for a building to house the archives. Last year Wright bloggers expressed concern about rumors that the archives might be sold to private interests and no longer be accessible to researchers. The Johnson loan agreement not only helps ensure the preservation of the artifacts, some of which are not stored in optimal conditions, but also makes them available to the public. SC Johnson will conserve the artifacts including china, a hanging lamp and windows from the Heath House in Frank Lloyd Wright and H. F.
