Some 2,000 research fellows, grad­ uate students, and professionals in business and government each year work with the Center's international staff in cooperative study, training, and research. They examine major issues related to population, resources and development, the environment, culture, and communication in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. The Center was established in 1960 by the United States Congress, which provides principal funding. Support also comes from more than twenty Asian and Pacific governments, as well as private agencies and corporations. Kurosawa's Ran: Reception and Interpretation ANN THOMPSON AKIRA KUROSAWA'S Ran (literally, war, riot, or chaos) was chosen as the first film to be shown at the First Tokyo International Film Festival in June 1985, and it opened commercially in Japan to record-breaking busi­ ness the next day. The director did not attend the festivities associated with the premiere, however, and the reception given to the film by Japa­ nese critics and reporters, though positive, was described by a French critic who had been deeply involved in the project as having "something of the air of an official embalming" (Raison 1985, 9).

Dennis Kennedy and Yong Li Lan This book treats contemporary Shakespeare performance in Asia from theoretical and historical perspectives: it is interested in how and why Shakespeare operates on the stage, in film, and in other performative modes in regions of the world that have no overwhelming reason to turn to him. The essayists represented here offer questions about cultural difference and cultural value, appropriation and dissemination, corporeal and intellectual adaptation, and the ways in which Asia is part of and simultaneously stands aloof from global civilization. Much has happened on planet Shakespeare since 1990. For our purposes the most important development has been a notable increase in Shakespeare performance in surroundings alien to the traditions of the main English-speaking nations, some of which has been exported to the West, prompting corresponding expansion in the international critical attention those productions have received in the popular press and in the academy. The collapse of the former Soviet empire and its satellite states, a major increase in globalized communications and marketing, political and economic migration, busi- ness and touristic travel, and the internationalizing of stock exchanges, among other issues, have combined to make many parts of the world aware of cultural products previously unknown or undervalued, or prompted re-evaluations of work already known. Some of this has been connected to the result of the globalizing of American movies and television, but it has affected Shakespeare as well.

    Press Note: Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2016 – Day 2 Event: A Fierce Beauty Launch of ‘Goddesses of Kathmandu Valley: Grace, Rage, Knowledge’ by Arun Gupto Kolkata, 15th January, 2016: Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2016 hosted the launch of ‘Goddesses of Kathmandu Valley: Grace, Rage, Knowledge’ penned by Arun Gupto. The book was released by Aparna Sen, Award winning filmmaker, screenwriter and actor, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. This book maps the diverse identities of goddesses through metaphors of grace, rage and knowledge, and offers an in-depth insight into femininity, sexual politics, ritual worships, religion, ecology and gender. Grace manifests as motherly sublimity, warring protectors, and varying personifications of sexuality. Rage encapsulates the fearful aspects of goddesses and independent identities of women. Knowledge evokes associations with order, reason and intellect in conflating gendered binaries of body/mind and nature/culture. The volume explores how these deity attributes are expressed and embedded through anthropomorphic as well as inorganic forms of nature, beautiful women, multi-legged and many-armed animals, epistemic selves, demonic beings, glamorous personifications as also grotesque sub-humans. The launch was followed by a captivating discussion with Aparna Sen and Kalyan Ray, writer and Professor of Literature bringing about insights into methodological combination of critical theory, mythological and philosophical concepts, along with religious studies, cultural studies, folklore, art, literature, sociology and gender studies, especially those interested in Nepal and Hinduism. Even though women are involved in all roles including as film producers, film critics, actresses, directors etc., generally, they have been underrepresented and used for the purpose of generating erotic pleasure. This underrepresentation mainly happens in films which are directed by men. Recently, the number of women film makers has been increasing. Majority of films which are directed by women represent women true to their self, projects their problems and works for their betterment. Thus, by analysing certain Indian popular films, the present research paper projects the main notions that such movies try to present and how far those movies are different from those movies which are produced and directed by men. Keywords: Representation, Women, Popular Movies. Introduction In the past, female representations were underrepresented and subjected to the concept of male gaze. Even though there are ‘super woman’ characters in popular films, women are still sexualised. The film sector visages a constant difficulty to trace a sufficient aspect to balance both the sexualisation and betterment of sturdy women. Although representations of women characters have been improved in recent years, the rapid change in attitude happened in the popular Indian industry with the arrival of women directors and script writers.

    Poonam Trivedi and Paromita Chakravarti, eds. 2018 Shakespeare and Indian Cinemas: Local Habitations New York: Routledge Rosa García-Periago Queen’s University, Belfast, UK Poonam Trivedi and Paromita Chakravarti’s Shakespeare and Indian Cinemas: Local Habitations (2018) is a more-than-welcome addition to the field of Shakespeare film scholarship. It is a superb and groundbreaking collection that aims to explore Shakespeare on the Indian screen beyond Bollywood cinema. Thus, it moves away completely from previous research on Indian Shakespeares, which mainly focused on Bollywood cinema, Bollywood Shakespeares (Dionne and Kapadia 2014) being a case in point. Numerous articles and chapters have been devoted to this field. Jonathan Locke Hart’s latest collection Shakespeare and Asia (2019) includes for instance a chapter on Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram Leela (a Bollywood movie based on Romeo and Juliet) and Jonathan Gil Harris’ Masala Shakespeare (2018) discusses several Bollywood Shakespearean adaptations throughout. Those essays that have gone beyond Bollywood Shakespeares have mostly focused on Vishal Bhardwaj’s trilogy, either regarded as challenging Bollywood conventions (García-Periago 2014) or examples of “auteur” films (Burnett 2013). However, the way Shakespeare has been used or reinterpreted in Indian regional cinemas has been quite scarce and limited. Burnett’s Shakespeare and World Cinema (2013) is one of the few instances with a chapter on the southern Indian filmmaker Jayaraj. Hence, this book opens uncharted territory, exploring in depth Shakespeare’s presence outside the Bollywood arena, and claims for more visibility of regional cinemas. Trivedi and Chakravarti’s collection is precisely distinctive in its emphasis on regionalism for further research in the relations between Indian film and Shakespeare.

    HUMANITIES INSTITUTE Stuart Blackburn, Ph.D. 36 CHOWRINGHEE LANE 1981 Aparna Sen Bengali and English OVERVIEW This is a sad and quiet film, a directorial debut for the then-popular actress, Aparna Sen. The script was apparently written by her in the make-up room during breaks while shooting a film in a Bombay studio. If so, the writer-director shows a remarkable control of her medium as well as the skilful use of European film traditions. The story concerns an Anglo-Indian woman, a teacher, who lives alone at 36 Chowringhee Lane in Calcutta, possibly in the late 1950s or early 1960s. With her brother in a nursing home and her niece recently departed for Australia (like many other Anglo-Indians after Independence), Violet Stoneham is lonely but finds happiness in teaching Shakespeare to bored students. For a while she enjoys the company of a former student and her boyfriend, but later they avoid seeing her and she is deeply saddened. Her only solace remains Elizabethan verse and her dog. CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE During three hundred years of residence in India, British officers, officials and merchants fathered thousands of children in and out of marriage, who went on to marry and have their own children. This Anglo-Indian community was particularly large in Calcutta, due to its sizable British population. Shunned by both British and Indian society as ‘half-castes’, the Anglo-Indians developed a culture on the margins, though some did hold important positions in business and the arts. After Independence in 1947, however, many Anglo-Indians left for the UK, Australia and other parts of the Empire.

    Gender and Women’s Studies RESEARCH ARTICLE Disability, Agency, and Subjectivity in Aparna Sen’s Three Disability Films: Sati, House of Memories, and 15 Park Avenue Sreerupa Sengupta Department of English, Auburn University, USA Abstract This paper focuses on three films directed by Indian-Bengali filmmaker Aparna Sen: Sati (1989) (Bengali), Paromitar Ekdin (subtitled as House of Memories) (2000) (Bengali), and 15 Park Avenue (English) (2006). Set in three different time periods and geopolitical spaces, these films experiment with the tabooed concept of female disability in India. Through a close reading and detailed analysis of the films, this paper argues that disability in the subcontinent has an altogether different implication for women because they are more valued in terms of their bodies’ cultural, social, and familial profitability or exchange value than their individual qualities. While disabled men are seen as unfortunate and objects of pity, disabled women are held culpable for shaming their family, community, and nation. In the subcontinent, disability is conveniently used to stigmatize women deviating from the normative duties their bodies should fulfill, including bearing children and being satisfactory sexual partners. This paper claims that disability is occasionally used as a discriminatory term irrespective of its medical validity. Sen does not forget to reiterate the fact that medical diagnosis is not a valid method in determining the lack of functionality of an individual. Uma, Khuku, and Mithi, are the specially-abled characters who are marginalized due to their deviation from “socially and politically constructed able-bodied or neurotypical norm” (Fraser 6). This chapter shows how Sen denies binary identity categories, such as abled-disabled, normal-abnormal, through a recognition of alternative ways of being.
