In the year or so that has passed since the inaugural issue of Gothic Nature: New Directions in Ecohorror and the EcoGothic a lot has changed. In what seems the blink of an eye, we now find ourselves in increasingly surreal—and Gothic—times in the midst of messily intermeshed social, political, economic, racial, and environmental turbulence. Many of the portents and warnings that have been entrenched from the outset in conversations around ‘ecohorror’ and ‘ecoGothic’ have rapidly taken frightening material form—evoking both disturbance and denial in seemingly equal measure. Consequently, the subject of interrogating and understanding the inextricable relationship between the human and the more-than-human—as well as the ‘Gothicness’ of this relationship—is becoming less niche by the day. The themes, and potentially the tools, of the ecoGothic are pushed ever more centre stage. In Charlie Brooker’s recent Netflix mockumentary Death to 2020, one character muses on the past year: ‘I’d say it was a train wreck and a shitshow, but that would be unfair to trains and shit’. More, certainly, has occurred in terms of ecosocial catastrophe than we can begin to catalogue here, but the global highlight of the year, of course, is COVID-19: a phenomenon that fits all too well within the themes of this journal. The pandemic, as William Hughes persuasively argued at the swiftly organised CoronaGothic conference (hosted by the University of Macau in June 2020) and in a subsequent special issue of Critical Quartley (2020) titled ‘CoronaGothic: Cultures of the Pandemic’, is a matter of dark and global ecology—and one which fits squarely within the remits of the ecoGothic. And indeed, the story of COVID-19 is a peculiarly ecoGothic one. We wish to dwell, therefore, for a moment, on the extraordinary context in which we are publishing issue two of Gothic Nature. 1 www.gothicnaturejournal.com Much has been written on the links between humankind’s treatment of the environment and disease. In the past few decades, there has been a notable increase in the number of disease outbreaks that cross over from nonhuman animals to humans, such as SARS and bird influenza (Kate E. Jones et al, 2008; Katherine F. Smith et al, 2014). A key subject for ecologists in the last decade has been to question why this increase has occurred. Rory Gibb et al (2020) found that deforestation, agricultural expansion, and land conversion—and, importantly, attendant biodiversity loss—increases the pool of pathogens that

Inhumanly tall, pale, black-clad, and with the power to control minds, the Slender Man references many classic, canonical horror monsters while simultaneously expressing an acute anxiety about the contemporary digital context that birthed him. This anxiety is apparent in the collective legends that have risen around the Slender Man since 2009, but it figures particularly strongly in the Web series Marble Hornets (Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage June 2009 - ). This thesis examines Marble Hornets as an example of an emerging trend in digital, online cinema that it defines as “folk horror”: a subgenre of horror that is produced by online communities of everyday people— or folk—as opposed to professional crews working within the film industry. Works of folk horror address the questions and anxieties of our current, digital age by reflecting the changing roles and behaviours of the everyday person, who is becoming increasingly involved with the products of popular culture. After providing a context for understanding folk horror, this thesis analyzes Marble Hornets through the lens of folkloric narrative structures such as legends and folktales, and vernacular modes of filmmaking such as cinéma direct and found footage horror.

    What Are You So Scared About?: Understanding the False Fear Response to Horror Films Sarah Seyler HSS 490-01H Faculty Director: Dr. Jeffrey Adams April 22nd, 2019 1 When a horror movie delivers a scare to an audience member, it is able to achieve something that is entirely illogical; it has made someone scared of something that poses no threat. So what is the logic behind a horror film? What aspects make a horror movie, something that can pose no physical threat, scary? In order to solve this question, many different aspects of filmmaking in horror will be looked at, including filmmaking techniques, psychological manipulation through storytelling, and the exploration of certain cultural elements in horror films that contextualize the fears a society has. By analyzing the different aspects of horror, we can understand how and why a movie is able to override the rational side of a viewer’s brain and make them scared. We can then understand why these aspects cause the body to have a physical reaction to the false threat, and why some people respond more intensely to horror than others. The goal of any movie is to elicit some sort of emotional response in the audience observing the film, and this is no different for horror movies. However, instead of a joy or sadness response, the horror movie aims to cause an observer to feel some sort of fear -- whether that be an immediate physical fear or longer-lasting psychological distress. Scaring people may sound simple, however it is actually a pretty complex process, as the film must be logical enough for the audience to buy into, allowing them to become immersed in the movie.

    ‘Impossible Tales’: Language and Monstrosity in the Literary Fantastic Irene Bulla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Irene Bulla All rights reserved ABSTRACT ‘Impossible Tales’: Language and Monstrosity in the Literary Fantastic Irene Bulla This dissertation analyzes the ways in which monstrosity is articulated in fantastic literature, a genre or mode that is inherently devoted to the challenge of representing the unrepresentable. Through the readings of a number of nineteenth-century texts and the analysis of the fiction of two twentieth-century writers (H. P. Lovecraft and Tommaso Landolfi), I show how the intersection of the monstrous theme with the fantastic literary mode forces us to consider how a third term, that of language, intervenes in many guises in the negotiation of the relationship between humanity and monstrosity. I argue that fantastic texts engage with monstrosity as a linguistic problem, using it to explore the limits of discourse and constructing through it a specific language for the indescribable. The monster is framed as a bizarre, uninterpretable sign, whose disruptive presence in the text hints towards a critique of overconfident rational constructions of ‘reality’ and the self. The dissertation is divided into three main sections. The first reconstructs the critical debate surrounding fantastic literature – a decades-long effort of definition modeling the same tension staged by the literary fantastic; the second offers a focused reading of three short stories from the second half of the nineteenth century (“What Was It?,” 1859, by Fitz-James O’Brien, the second version of “Le Horla,” 1887, by Guy de Maupassant, and “The Damned Thing,” 1893, by Ambrose Bierce) in light of the organizing principle of apophasis; the last section investigates the notion of monstrous language in the fiction of H.

Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.

Rings 1 , Beth A. Baughman 2 , and Fred J. Arnold 2 Introduction The purpose of this circular is to consolidate the abstracted literature on the dingy cutworm complex, Feltia ducens Walker and Feltia subgothica (Haworth). The term "dingy cutworm complex" is used since there is much con­ fusion and disagreement between both earlier and contemporary taxonomists as to the correct usage of the scientific name of the economically important dingy cutworm. Contemporary taxonomists agree that Feltia ducens and Feltia subgothica have been considered distinct species for more than 70 years. In the past there has been debate as to whether the latter species should be called sub­ gothica or jaculifera. In this publication, the authors are following the nomenclatural policy of the United States National Museum which is based upon Forbes' interpretation of the complex. The photographs on the contents page illustrate the species which the authors consider the dingy cutworm, Feltia ducens Walker. Forbes (1954) believed that Haworth (1810) probably had ducens and subgothica mixed up. He implied that it is not certain which species Haworth described as subgothica and therefore Forbes called it jaculifera. Several other authors (Hampson 1903; McDunnough 1938; Smith 1893) believed that Haworth had only a single specimen.
