First of all, I hope this note finds you and your family safe and healthy. Then I think about the losses some have endured from financial security to the lives of loved ones. I think about the fact that we are an organization of kindness and compassion. These are some of the finest qualities I find about our rd3 District. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY !!!! I hope everyone has an exciting Fourth planned this year. While you are enjoying the hot dogs and hamburgers, we can celebrate the birth of this wonderful nation we are privileged to live in. Some of our lodges are taking the summer months off for mem- bers to visit with family and friends, now that the states are opening up after this 15 month of isolation. Some lodges are having summer picnics and kubb tournaments, group visits to the ball park. Whatever you are doing stay safe, stay cool, remember the suntan lotion and have a wonderful summer. Thank you all for your encouraging words to me and your 3D board, your support, and understanding. -

It includes manuscript collections (MS), vertical files (VF), published works, maps, prints, and photographs that may support research on the military, political, civilian, social, and economic dimensions of the war, including the United States’ relations with France and Great Britain in the decade preceding the conflict. The bulk of the manuscript material relates to military operations in the Chesapeake Bay region, Maryland politics, Baltimore- based privateers, and the impact of economic sanctions and the British blockade of the Bay (1813-1814) on Maryland merchants. Many manuscript collections, however, may support research on other theaters of the war and include correspondence between Marylanders and military and political leaders from other regions. Although this inventory includes the most significant manuscript collections and published works related to the War of 1812, it is not comprehensive. Library and archival staff are continually identifying relevant sources in MCHC’s holdings and acquiring new sources that will be added to this inventory. Accordingly, researchers should use this guide as a starting point in their research and a supplement to thorough searches in MCHC’s online library catalog. -

Taney selection from Memoir of Roger Brooke Taney (1872). “the star-spangled banner”: maryland, september 1814 Francis Scott Key: “Defence of Fort M‘Henry” On September 3, 1814, Francis Scott Key, a thirty-five-year-old Georgetown attorney, and Colonel John Stuart Skinner, a U.S. prisoner-of-war exchange officer, boarded HMS Tonnant, Cochrane’s flagship, then at anchor in the Patapsco River near Baltimore. President Madison had dispatched the pair to negotiate the freedom of Key’s friend Dr. William Beanes, a leading citizen of Upper Marlboro, Mary- land, who had been taken prisoner for arresting British stragglers fol- lowing the burning of Washington. Their mission was successful, but because they had become privy to British war intelligence, the three Americans were detained until after the attack on Baltimore. On the night of September 13–14, they watched the bomb-and-rocket assault on Fort McHenry from the deck of their truce ship, and Key, an ama- teur poet moved by the spectacle, began to compose the opening verse of a song, taking his melody from an English drinking tune popular since the 1760s. “Defence of Fort M‘Henry,” later retitled “The Star- Spangled Banner,” quickly became one of America’s best-loved patriotic songs, and in 1931 Congress made it the national anthem. -

When one escaped and informed his superiors of the arrest, a contingent of British marines returned to Upper Marlboro and arrested Beanes and the others, and held them in exchange for the release of the British prisoners.
