-> INTRODUCTORY

HIS CATALOG, probably the most elab orately illustrated in colors of all similar publications heretofore issued by any mu sic house in the United States, is intended t as a guide and handbook for the use of players and teachers of stringed instruments.

Its sphere is limited to modern Violins, Violas, Violoncellos and Double Basses, with the accessories pertaining thereto. We also issue a brochure de luxe of rare old instruments of the same family, which will be sent on request to those contemplating i the purchase of such. All descriptions in this catalog are concise and are drawn with the utmost precision, devoid of exag geration or misrepresentation. The beautiful three- color illustrations picture the various instruments as realistically as possible, bearing in mind that no two pieces of wood are exactly alike in grain or texture and that it is the ear-mark of an artistic workman to i take advantage of such differences, in order to lend a distinct individuality to each and every subject fashioned by his hands. i

3 s &o

The instruments described in the following pages are NOT picked up haphazard in the open market. They are specially made for or by Lyon & Healy, by experts, on lines laid down by the greatest of the old master makers. Some of the world's most celebrated violins, such as the "Earl" , the "Messiah" Stradivarius and the "King Joseph" Guarnerius supplied the models for instruments listed in this catalog, and in these reproductions design, measurements and color of varnish have been as carefully followed as possible. But it is especially in their superlative tone quality that our stringed instruments differ from others at similar prices, and this characteristic will be found throughout the entire line, from the superb Hill at six hundred dollars to the modest Eureka Violin Outfit at four dollars—every instru ment listed is at the head of its class, and from this standard no deviation is or will be allowed.

As the house of Lyon & Healy is the largest in V \ the world devoted to music exclusively, so are its guarantees the broadest, and the one which vitally interests the buyer, safeguarding him in his purchase, is that the quality of its merchandise will always be a The best obtainable at the price." We ask your patronage and will do our best to leserve it, LYON & HEALY Chicago, August, 1916,

Feb„ 17, 1660—" In ye morning came Mr. Hill the Instrument maker, and I consulted with him about ye altering of mv Lute and mv Viall—PEPYS'S DIARY." THE VIOLINS OF W. E. HILL & SONS, LONDON

OREMOST among violin builders of the world stands the celebrated house of W. E. Hill & Sons. The ^i F name is familiar to all who are conversant with violins of the better class. In the violin world it stands for highest integrity and quality. For more than one hun dred and fifty years the Hills have been violin makers and dealers in the violins of the old masters. Violins which bear the label of this house are made by Mr. Alfred Hill, the present senior member of the firm, who is universally recognized as the leading violin expert of his day. With him the making of violins is not a matter of pounds and pence, for his time might be much more profitably employed dealing in violins by the masters of the 1 7th, \ 8th and 1 9th centuries,—it is a real labor of love. This accounts for the rare artistic finish found, among modern makers, only in the instruments of this firm. \ Such violins as these stand in a class entirely their own. They are in no sense commercial—in every sense they are artistic. They represent the art of violin making at its highest and best. Works of art produced under those conditions are never in large quantities; the amount of time consumed in making a Hill "Messiah" or "Alard" copy is too great. Therefore we can secure but a limited number. But such violins are monuments of skill to their maker. They will live and develop in tone and loveliness the same as the choicest Lupot, which is not superior either in workman ship or finish.

PLATE I LYON & HEALY'S OWN MAKE VIOLIN Style G1180

Illustration on opposite page.

HIS superb violin is modeled after the T celebrated "Earl Strad,' of the Hawley Collection, one of the choicest specimens in existence of the great master s work, and one of the finest in tonal qualities that has ever graced our collection.

'.:. In producing this beautiful violin we have exercised the utmost care in measurements and proportions as well as in following the graceful outlines of the famous original, and a careful test has shown that the resultant tone has more than fulfilled our expectations. In presenting this splendid instrument for the approval of the violin world, we feel that it is equal in tone, varnish, artistic workmanship and careful selection of woods to the violins of any other modern maker, foreign or American. Every detail in its construction shows the hand of the master workman. It presents the super lative degree of modern violin quality at its price.

8 LYON & HEALY'S OWN MAKE VIOLIN Style G1180

In appearance this violin is exceedingly beautiful. The pure oil varnish with which it is cov ered is of a lustrous orange red, and its formula is not bettered by that of any other modern violin maker. The back is of the choicest flamed maple, old and garret seasoned, selected to resemble as nearly as possible that of the original. The sides match the back. The top is of select old seasoned spruce, of fine, straight, even grain. Trimmings are of the very finest quality throughout. The tone is large, round and flexible, far carrying, therefore eminently suited to the require ments of the all around pro fessional musician, to whom this instrument is enthusiastic ally recommended.

LYON & HEALY CREMONATONE VIOLINS NAME REGISTERED at UR Cremonatone Violins have been on the market for years and their reputation is so firmly established that need of an O introduction is hardly apparent. At the same time it is, perhaps, well to recall the fact that when they were first intro duced by us our object was to supply a violin, at a popular price,

in which flexibility, sweetness, and smoothness of tone pre u> dominated over quantity, for it does not follow that, because a tone is loud, shrill, and piercing, it is strong and far carrying, and it is much less beautiful. The success of these instruments is well attested by the numer ous testimonials which are on file. It therefore must appear r-'i evident to any one contemplating the purchase of a good violin that his investment is well made and that he takes no chances if he buys a Cremonatone. ) We have never claimed that they are better than good old violins, as anyone who knows the peculiar qualities of the old masters' violins knows that the same cannot be found in a new instrument; it is a physical impossibility. We do, however, claim that they have greater flexibility, are more easily played, and that a truer pianissimo and better fortissimo can be obtained than from other makes of violins similarly priced. The differences of light and shade in tone are much more varied in the Cremonatone Violins than in many other new instruments selling at higher prices. s Their flexibility of tone and responsive qualities make them easier to play than the usual stiff toned violin. Three hours' practice on a Cremonatone violin is less fatiguing than an hour's work on many other makes. Another thing with which flexibility has everything to do is that the tone carries under all conditions; therefore, besides being especially well adapted for the home they are also good concert violins, and being properly constructed their tone improves with use from year to year.

I CREMONATONE VIOLIN Style G1126

Built on the lines of Joseph Guarnerius in , about 1 740, these violins possess to an astonishing degree the tone quality which for nearly three centuries has made Cremona famous. The violinist who, by association with the instruments of the old Italian masters, has made himself acquainted with the ideal violin quality which h T\ they alone exemplify, cannot fail to note the resemblance and to be charmed by the wonder ful tone of these instruments. No modern violins have ever been offered elsewhere in this country, at any price, which surpass them for beauty of tone and general playing qualities. Some of our makers who excel in workmanship may equal them in finish and appearance, but no one else has been able to impart to the tone that pe culiar quality which violinists call "timbre" or tone color, which is the distinguishing charac teristic of this 's work. He employs beautiful wood and a soft oil varnish of a transparent ruby red color, which is artistically applied after his violins have been sufficiently seasoned in the white. Price, f. o. b. 12 «J3 i CHICAGO CREMONATONE VIOLIN Style G1125

This violin is modeled after the celebrated King Joseph Guarnerius, of the Hawley Col lection, the most famous speci men of this great maker extant, and sold by us for $12,000. The wonderful model of the King Joseph is faithfully fol lowed, our intention being to reproduce both tone and ap pearance. The wood is of the choicest aged quality and only that having a figure and grain similar to that in the "King" is used. It is most artistically covered with a rich oil varnish, which is soft and velvety in quality, and usually a rich, ripe plum shade like the original. The workmanship is in the high est sense artistic, the cutting of the scroll, sound holes and edges denoting at once the mas ter hand. The tone, owing to the excellence of model, ma terials and workmanship, has much of the brilliant quality of the famous original. It is rich and resonant, even and responsive on all strings and in all positions, broad and deep in the lower tones and unusually clear and respon sive in the upper. The appearance of wear in the original is also carefully reproduced. It is a violin not only rich in tone but a picture to the eye as well. Price, f. o. b. Chicago $125.00

^^^X« 32 LYON & HEALY VIOLAS HJ The is one of the most important instruments of the modern orchestra. In the it is indispensable. It is tuned a fifth lower than the violin, its lowest tone being C below the open G string of the violin. It is becoming more and more used for playing in the home by violin-playing amateurs, who delight in sombre tonal effects. A violin player can easily finger 4 the viola and can quickly learn to read the alto clef, in which viola music is always written. Good viola players are always in demand and every violinist should also learn to play the viola. It is fre quently used, especially in dance music, on the second violin part by simply ignoring the lowest or C string, and playing the part in the treble clef as written, considering the three upper strings as $ being the three lower ones of the violin. Many violinists claim that playing the viola improves their violin playing by increasing the stretch and strength of the fingers. As a solo instrument it stands shoulder to K shoulder with its smaller sister, the violin. As a home instrument there is none more desirable. In church and Sunday school it is ever welcome. In the mandolin and guitar orchestra it is equally valuable.

The world's greatest composers, from Bach and Handel down 1 to the latest and best of our modern writers, have recognized the and enriched its literature with many of their choicest works.

E The cello is not extremely difficult to learn. With the assistance of a good teacher one can, in a comparatively short time, play < well enough to perform creditably the cello parts of the easier Haydn and Mozart quartettes, trios, many light solo pieces and the ordinary light orchestra selections and dance music. Many good performers have had no instruction beyond that derived > from a good book. Violinists quickly become proficient on the cello, and many find that their violin technic is improved thereby through the extra strength and stretch developed in the left hand.

Our line of cejlos is larger and more complete than can be found in any other music house. They have been selected for us excellence in every detail, musical and mechanical. They are made from the best of materials, correct in model, perfectly adjusted, properly strung, and every individual instrument reaches its purchaser ready to use as soon as he has tuned it.

To those contemplating the purchase of a still higher class cello we will send on request, free and postpaid, our ''Catalog of Rare Old Genuine Italian, French and German Violins, Violas and Violoncellos."

LYON & HEALY DOUBLE BASSES

HE forms the foundation for the of the modern orchestra, and should be found in all such T organizations, large or small. It is now also included in all the better class of concert bands. For the benefit of those not familiar with the various sizes of double basses and their uses m we offer the following suggestions: The one-quarter size bass is adapted for use in small juvenile organizations and in mandolin, guitar and banjo clubs. Half and three-quarter size basses are in universal use, the latter predominating. For organizations up to five or six pieces the half size is large enough to meet all require ments and because of its portability is often preferred to the larger size. The three-quarters size is the one in general use in this country, even in our largest symphony orchestras and other musical organizations of national reputation. The full size bass is little used in this country, but is of great value to the more pretentious orchestras and bands, where its volume and depth of tone supply a foundation impossible to produce with any other instrument. Three-stringed basses are used mostly in dance orchestras, but we recommend the four-stringed for all other lines of work, on account of the increased compass. Our Double Basses are of superior quality. They are made of the best seasoned wood, are properly modeled and propor tioned, and possess a voluminous and resonant tone. They respond to the bow much easier than the ordinary class. With each instrument we include a bow, cake of rosin, instruction book and fingerboard chart. When packed in suitable shipping case the weight is from 1 00 to 1 30 pounds. NOTE.—Many who play the Double Bass in orchestra are not aware that they can play the bass parts in band music, without transposing or changing the parts in any way, reading just as the music is written.

VIOLIN ACCESSORIES Violin Bows HE GREAT importance of the bow to good violin playing has led us to be very careful in the selection of this acces T sory. The bows here listed will be found to be perfectly balanced, correct in weight, of best modern workmanship, excep tional in finish, and unexcelled in the quality of material used. They constitute the finest line of bows ever offered by any house in this country and are the direct result of our experience as specialists in violins and bows for more than half a century. We carry a large stock of genuine rare old bows. List on request. W. E. Hill & Sons, London We take pleasure in announcing that we have been appointed by Messrs. Wm. E. Hill & Sons, of London, their accredited agents for their own make of violins and bows. As violin bow makers, Messrs. Hill & Sons are recognized as absolutely preeminent. Among the great artists of the day the artistic quality of these bows is fully recognized and more of them are in use in the hands of celebrated players than of any other make. The preeminence of the bows of Messrs. Hill & Sons, is due to several important conditions which exist with them. One of the principal of these is the fact that they started in to manu facture the best bows that could possibly be made, regardless of cost. To them the finest examples of Francois Tourte's bows were always available as models. Another very important feature is the possession by them of a large and aged stock of the choicest Per nambuco procurable. Pernambuco suitable for violin bows is a very difficult wood to procure; thorough seasoning is an absolute requisite and the wood of which these bows are made is seasoned ten years, by natural processes, before use. These conditions, combined with exceptional skill in the matter of workmanship, result in the production of the finest line of bows which have come from any maker since Francois Tourte. The following bows are all made in the shops of Messrs. Hill & Sons, near London, and differ in price according to the quality of materials, workmanship and the style of frogs used. The cheapest bows of the line though plain in design possess exceptional playing qualities. It is a well known fact that two articles radically different in quality cannot be made in the same shop side by side. Every detail receives minutest attention. The screws, often considered matters of small importance, are especially made from case hardened steel and are very durable.

LYON & HEALY VIOLIN STRINGS Good strings mean a great deal to the violinist. A good violin poorly strung, either with strings of poor quality or of improper sizes, will give most unsatisfactory results, while a good set of strings, properly gauged, will often greatly improve a mediocre instrument. We carry the best grade of strings that the markets of the world can supply. Our strings will always be found to be fresh, clean stock, which is due to the fact that our supplies are received monthly and our trade is very large. Strings in our store do not lie in stock long enough to become dry, hard and brittle. All orders are filled promptly and carefully, and all strings are properly gauged as ordered. NOTE.—Lyon & Healy Special Tested, Symphonic, Supremity and Sun Brand strings are unobtainable until the end of the European War.

L'AIGLON BRAIDED SILK VIOLIN STRINGS

We recommend L'Aiglon silk strings for all business purposes, particularly to those who have trouble with perspiring hands. This silk string is the nearest approach in tone to a good gut string that we have ever seen. It can never unravel, fray out or become "fuzzy." It is strong, reliable, powerful in tone and gives very little trouble from stretching, either in summer or winter, damp weather or dry. It will give unlimited satisfaction to players in moving picture theatres, dance halls, pavilions and other places where a string is subjected to long, hard usage. It does not give the harsh, cutting tone so often found in other silk strings, and which is so much objected to by the critical player. The tone is smooth, resonant and far-carrying. Fox Brand Symphonic Wound Strings are made from the finest selected and specially prepared Italian gut, wound as stated, with silver plated cop per, sterling silver or pure gold wire, in such a manner as to make them absolutely free from rattling, against which they are unreservedly guar anteed. A special feature of these strings is the silk undercover, which is used on strings which are so listed. This is spun on the gut before the wire, and acts not only as an absolute preventative of rattling, but protects the gut from climatic changes.

86 THE HAWLEY COLLECTION

A BOOK FOR THE VIOLIN LOVER HIS handsome volume de luxe should be in the library of every music lover, whether amateur or professional, both on account of the marvelously accurate and beautiful reproductions, in their natural T colors, of the celebrated violins of which it principally deals, and because of the information in general which is included. It contains an introductory by the late Theodore Thomas, who was an enthusiastic lover of violins. It is written throughout in a most interesting strain, covering the birth of the violin and its development in Brescia, Cremona, Milan and other Italian centers, as well as its career in Germany and France. The book is em bellished with life-like pictures in their natural colors of the fronts and backs of the King Joseph Guarnerius, the Jarnowick, the Earl and Healy Stradi varius, as well as famous specimens of Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Maggini, Roggeri and others. Twelve halftone plates show the arching, sides, etc., of the King Joseph, and a table of measurements of the violins in the Hawley Collection, as taken by Mr. A. H. Pitkin, of Hartford, Conn., is included. The book is handsomely bound in boards of soft gray or in full cloth, as desired. It is printed on egg-shell paper, in beautiful old-style antique letter, 1 0-point in size, with initials in red. It contains 105 pages, 24 color plates and 20 engravings. The original edition was limited to 2,000 copies, and only a small number now remains unsold. After this edition is exhausted it will be impossible to obtain more, as the plates have been destroyed; therefore, anyone desiring to possess a copy should act promptly. Prices: In Board Binding, Cloth Back, in Case $5.00 In Full Cloth 7.50
