spring2014 • Volume23 • Number1 welcOme home. Shrouded in darkness, concealed with caution tape and faintly smelling of commercial-grade latex, my workspace on a recent morning had all the makings of a crime scene investigation, minus the actual crime. (Seems the ridicule of an innocent man on the occasion of his 40th birthday is still legal in this country.) Picture the children’s-play-area ball pit at your local pizza joint or fast-food establishment, only with more insults and (slightly) less bacteria. “Friends” had engulfed my desk in a sea of black balloons, each emblazoned with a different dig from a clever co-worker. Excavating the area like a young Indiana Jones, I read everything from “our interns were born when you were in high school” to “you know you’re 40 when someone offers you a seat on the monorail…and you don’t refuse.” While I may have been surprised (and, truth be told, delighted) by the extremity of the effort, I wasn’t surprised by the effort itself. Having now been part of the Disney Vacation Club Cast family for the better part of a decade, I know how much this team loves to celebrate. From births to birthdays, awards to anniversaries, changes in our community to changes in humidity, rare is the month that doesn’t bring cause for celebration. We’re even headquartered in a town called Celebration. Our passion for celebrating what – and who – we appreciate should come in quite handy this year, as Disney Vacation Club rolls out Membership Magic, a vibrant array of Membership enhancements, exclusive experiences and special offers.

ABSTRACT SUFFERING AND EARLY QUAKER IDENTITY: ELLIS HOOKES AND THE “GREAT BOOK OF SUFFERINGS” By Kristel Marie Hawkins Early Quakers formed group awareness and identification through patient suffering. The developing Quaker bureaucracy encouraged them to witness to their faith according to sanctioned practices and to have reports recorded into the “Great Book of Sufferings.” Using Lancashire as an example, this thesis examines the structure, contents, and overall purpose of the suffering accounts. The Society of Friends initially used its members’ sufferings as a public advocacy tool to end religious persecution. By the late 1680s, the focus shifted as persecution lessened. Friends subsequently sent in their reports as part of a ritual that built internal solidarity through joyful suffering and created a quasi-martyrological tradition. Beginning around 1660, Ellis Hookes, clerk to the Quakers, copied countless accounts into two volumes of the “Great Book of Sufferings.” He began a practice, which lasted over a century and filled another forty-two volumes, of linking Quakers together through their suffering accounts. 9DEC201416063963 Fiscal Year 2014 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter 14JAN201515462037 Dear Shareholders, From the first day in this job I’ve understood what an honor and responsibility it is to be Disney’s CEO; but over the last nine years I’ve come to truly appreciate what an unbelievable privilege it is to lead this phenomenal company. It’s always been my belief that, once the people who work here believed in their own greatness, there was virtually nothing we couldn’t accomplish. And they have proven me right time and time again. Given our track record of achievement and the incredibly dynamic times we live in, I can honestly say I’ve never been more optimistic or enthusiastic about what lies ahead for The Walt Disney Company. We just delivered the best results in the history of this legendary company, marking our fourth fiscal year of record performance in a row, and our stock price has recently been trading higher than ever, which speaks to our sustained success as well as our optimism and belief in Disney’s potential to keep growing and creating value over the long term. Our Studio delivered some of the biggest movies of 2014, and surpassed $4 billion in global box office for the second year in a row. Our Parks and Resorts continued to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation to take the guest experience to a whole new level of excellence, achieving record worldwide attendance and delivering double-digit earnings growth. ESPN further strengthened its claim to the number one sports brand with long-term rights deals for the best in sports and the launch of a new SEC network into 70 million homes.
