Colin McAllister Regnum Caelorum Terrestre: The Apocalyptic Vision of Lactantius May 2016 Abstract: The writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius have been extensively studied by historians, classicists, philosophers and theologians. But his unique apocalyptic eschatology expounded in book VII of the Divinae Institutiones, his largest work, has been relatively neglected. This paper will distill Lactantius’s complex narrative and summarize his sources. In particular, I investigate his chiliasm and the nature of the intermediate state, as well as his portrayal of the Antichrist. I argue that his apocalypticism is not an indiscriminate synthesis of varying sources - as it often stated - but is essentially based on the Book of Revelation and other Patristic sources. +++++ The eminent expert on all things apocalyptic, Bernard McGinn, wrote: Even the students and admirers of Lactantius have not bestowed undue praise upon him. To Rene Pichon [who wrote in 1901 what is perhaps still the seminal work on Lactantius’ thought] ‘Lactantius is mediocre in the Latin sense of the word - and also a bit in the French sense’; to Vincenzo Loi [who studied Lactantius’ use of the Bible] ‘Lactantius is neither a philosophical or theological genius nor linguistic genius.’ Despite these uneven appraisals, the writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius [c. 250-325] hold, it seems, a little something for everyone.1 Political historians study Lactantius as an important historical witness to the crucial transitional period from the Great Persecution of Diocletian to the ascension of Constantine, and for insight into the career of the philosopher Porphyry.2 Classicists and 1 All dates are anno domini unless otherwise indicated. -

Some foxing and browning, but a good copy. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this guide of ancient Rome, mainly based on Iustus Lispius. The book was edited by Giovanni Angelo Ruffinelli and by him dedicated to Agostino Pallavicino. Ruff- inelli, who commissioned his editions to the main Roman typographers of the time, used as device the Aldine anchor and dolphin without the motto (cf. Il libro italiano del Cinquec- ento: produzione e commercio. Catalogo della mostra Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Roma 20 ottobre - 16 dicembre 1989, Rome, 1989, p. 119). Giovanni Maria Bardi, Count of Vernio, here dis- guised under the name of ‘Incruscato’, as he was called in the Accademia della Crusca, was born into a noble and rich family. He undertook the military career, participating to the war of Siena (1553-54), the defense of Malta against the Turks (1565) and the expedition against the Turks in Hun- gary (1594). -

Philip Melanchthon in the Writings of His Polish Contemporaries
ODRODZENIE I REFORMACJA W POLSCE ■ SI 2017 ■ PL ISSN 0029-8514 Janusz Tazbir Philip Melanchthon in the Writings of his Polish Contemporaries Over thirty years ago Oskar Bartel, a distinguished scholar of the history of the Polish Reformation, bemoaned how little was known about the relations between preceptor Germaniae and the movement. In an article about the familiarity with Melanchthon, both as person and his oeuvre, in Poland, Bartel wrote: “wir besitzen einige Werke, meist Broschüren über Luther, Calvin, sogar Hus und Zwingli, aber ich habe keine über Melanchton gefunden”.1 Bartel’s article provided a recapitulation, if somewhat incomplete, of the state of research at the time, and essentially stopped at the death of the Reformer. There- fore, in this study I would like to point to the results of the last thirty years of research, on the one hand, and highlight the post-mortem impact of Melanchthon’s writings and the reflection of his person in the memories of the next generations, on the other. The new information about the contacts Melanchthon had with Poland that has come to light since the 1960s is scattered across a number of articles or monographs; there is to date no separate study devoted to the German Reformer. Only a handful of contributions have been published. No wonder therefore that twenty years after the publication of Bartel’s article, Roman Nir begins his study of corre- spondence between Melanchthon and Krzycki thus: “Relatively little 1 O. Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

AUGUSTINUS HIPPONENSIS, Enarrationes in Psalmos CXX-CXXXIII In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment Northern Italy, likely Milan (Abbey of Morimondo?), c. 1150-1175 99 ff., preceded and followed by a modern parchment flyleaf, missing at least a quire at the beginning (collation: i-xii8, xiii3), written by a single scribe above the top line in a twelfth-century relatively angular minuscule in brown ink, text copied on 25 lines (justification: 115/125 x 75 mm), added explicits and chapter headings at the end of each textual division in a different rounded script (most in pale brown ink, some in pale red ink), prickings in outer margins, ruled in hard point, catchwords on ff. 32v and 40v, rubrics in bright red, liturgical lessons marked in the margins in red or brown ink roman numerals (sometimes preceded by the letter “lc” for “lectio” (e.g. f. 8), some initials and capitals stroked in red, larger painted 3-line high initials in red, one 4-line high initial in green with downward extension for a further eight lines, some with ornamental flourishing (e.g. f. 82v), some contemporary annotations and/or corrections. Bound in a modern tanned pigskin binding over wooden boards, renewed parchment pastedown and flyleaves, brass catches and clasps, fine restored condition (some leaves cropped a bit shorter, a few waterstains in bottom right corner of a number of folios, never affecting legibility). Dimensions 165 x 105 mm. Twelfth-century copy of the middle section of the important and influential exegetical treatise devoted to the Psalms, Augustine’s longest work. The codex boasts a twelfth-century ex-libris from the abbey of Morimondo, and it appears in the Morimondo Library Catalogue datable to the third quarter of the twelfth century. -

chapter 11 The Longs and Shorts of an Emergent Nation: Nikolaos Loukanes’s 1526 Iliad and the Unprosodic New Trojans Calliope Dourou According to Milman Parry’s seminal definition, the formula in the Homeric poems is “a group of words which is regularly employed under the same met- rical conditions to express a given essential idea”.1 When analysing, in partic- ular, the intricate set of rules underlying the noun-epithet formulae for the Achaeans,2 the eminent philologist spares no effort in elaborately explaining how phrases such as ἐυκνήμιδας Ἀχαιούς or κάρη κομόωντας Ἀχαιούς are regular- ly employed in the Homeric corpus because they fit the metrical needs of the dactylic hexameter. Perusing, however, Nikolaos Loukanes’s 1526 intriguing ad- aptation of the Iliad and paying close attention to the fixed epithets allotted by him to the Achaeans and the Trojans, we are faced with a distinctly dissimilar system of nomenclature, conditioned primarily not by any prosody-related ex- igencies, but rather by a proto-national sense of pride in the accomplishments of the gallant forefathers and by a concurrent, profound antipathy towards the people that came to be viewed as the New Trojans, the Turks.3 1 Loukanes and His Intellectual and Historical Context Born at the dawn of the eventful sixteenth century, the Cinquecento of the startling transatlantic discoveries, the ceaseless Italian Wars, the vociferous emergence of the Protestant Reformation, and the unrelenting Ottoman ad- vance into European territory, Nikolaos Loukanes, like so many of his erudite compatriots residing in flourishing cities in the West, appears to have ardently 1 Parry (1971: 272). -
My Research Is Based on a Survey on the Philological and Editorial Activity
My research is based on a survey on the philological and editorial activity, and on the teaching and the historical role played by the humanist Marcus Musurus in the process of spreading the Greek language in the West between the 15th and 16th centuries. This research is fully inserted in the project “Europa Humanistica” which is a European network in which many different European countries participate. This network is promoted by the French Institute IRHT (part of the CNRS) where I have developed my research. The final product of my study is a monograph on Marcus Musurus which completes and enriches the outline of the initial research. I have also produced another monograph about Theocritus of Marcus Musurus and two other articles. The originality of my project lies in the integration of a broad range of interdisciplinary methodologies in order to produce a complete and concise study of the life and work of Musurus. To date only partial studies have been carried out. The following objectives of the project have been achieved. For Philological and historical sector: 1) A global and deepened research on Musurus’ editions which examines : a) assessment of the manuscripts used; b) concrete evaluation of Musurus’ importance to text correction; c) role in the history of the technique of philology and the philological method; d) verification of Musurus’ participation in other editions and, in particular, in the editio princeps of Pindarus (by Z. Calliergi, in Venice in 1513). 2) Study of the notes taken during the lessons (recollectae), and in particular of that one by Cuno and of the notes in the margin to reconstruct the features of Musurus’ teaching activity, and to ascertain its role in the spreading of the knowledge of Greek in Italy and Europe. -

Italian Books I Philobiblon Rome London New York In collaboration with Govi Rare Books, New York Italian Books I Spring 2019 Preface We are very pleased to present Philobiblon’s new publishing initiative Italian Books, a series of numbered catalogues devoted to the important place of Italian culture on the world stage. The catalogues will feature manuscripts, documents, printed books, engravings, drawings, and artist’s books produced in Italy, as well as Italian books printed outside the country, translations attesting to the impact of Italian culture abroad, including volumes finely bound by sought-after Italian binders, and those once owned by great protagonists of Italian book collecting. Together these selections will illuminate a journey into the multifarious Italian book world in the broadest and richest sense. After all, the history of the book itself is a fascinating narrative, an uninterrupted medley of fruitful cultural transfers and the migration of ideas. In this regard, Italy has always represented a unique crossroad among cultures, the custodian of ancient past, as well as the gateway between Western and Eastern worlds, whose academies, art collections, libraries, printing houses, and bookshops have provided, over the centuries, fertile meeting grounds for generations of scholars, bibliophiles, and connoisseurs. In the first decades of the twentieth century, two international exhibitions paid homage to the Italian book. The Mostra Storica dell’Arte della Stampa in Italia opened in Leipzig in 1914 and presented the magnificence of Italian book production from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The splendid Exposition du Livre Italien followed in Paris in 1926, mounted at the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
