Priming and Negative Priming in Violent Video Games David Zendle Doctor of Philosophy University of York Computer Science September 2016 Abstract This is a thesis about priming and negative priming in video games. In this context, priming refers to an effect in which processing some concept makes reactions to related concepts easier. Conversely, negative priming refers to an effect in which ignoring some concept makes reactions to related concepts more difficult. The General Aggression Model (GAM) asserts that the depiction of aggression in VVGs leads to the priming of aggression-related concepts. Numerous studies in the literature have seemingly confirmed that this relationship exists. However, recent research has suggested that these results may be the product of confounding. Experiments in the VVG literature commonly use different commercial off- the-shelf video games as different experimental conditions. Uncontrolled variation in gameplay between these games may lead to the observed priming effects, rather than the presence of aggression-related content. Additionally, in contrast to the idea that players of VVGs necessarily process in-game concepts, some theorists have suggested that players instead ignore in-game concepts. This suggests that negative priming rather than priming might happen in VVGs. The first series of experiments reported in this thesis show that priming does not happen in video games when known confounds are controlled. These results also suggest that negative priming may occur in these cases. However, the games used in these experiments were not as realistic as many VVGs currently on the market. This raises concerns that these results may not generalise widely. I therefore ran a further three experiments. -

Loading… The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association Vol 6(9): 82-99 http://loading.gamestudies.ca The Dreamcast, Console of the Avant-Garde Nick Montfort Mia Consalvo Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concordia University [email protected] [email protected] Abstract We argue that the Dreamcast hosted a remarkable amount of videogame development that went beyond the odd and unusual and is interesting when considered as avant-garde. After characterizing the avant-garde, we investigate reasons that Sega's position within the industry and their policies may have facilitated development that expressed itself in this way and was received by gamers using terms that are associated with avant-garde work. We describe five Dreamcast games (Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, Rez, Seaman, and SGGG) and explain how the advances made by these industrially productions are related to the 20th century avant- garde's lesser advances in the arts. We conclude by considering the contributions to gaming that were made on the Dreamcast and the areas of inquiry that remain to be explored by console videogame developers today. The Dreamcast, however brief its commercial life, was a platform that allowed for such work to happen and that accomplished this. It is not just that there were a large number of weird or unusual games developed during the short commercial life of this platform. We argue, rather, that avant-garde videogame development happened on the Dreamcast, even though this development occurred in industrial rather than "indie" or art contexts. -

(SCEI) responsible for business operations in Japan, announced today that PlayStation®2 will become available in a new color, “Ceramic White”, beginning Thursday, May 26th 2005, at an open price. Given the numerous requests and strong popularity of the color “Ceramic White” in Japan, SCEJ decided to launch PlayStation 2 in this color. The new hardcover size PlayStation 2 will now become available at a stylish color making it a fashionable item to enjoy coordination with interior decorations and audio-visual products. Since the release of the new slim line model (in “Charcoal Black” color) in November 2004, PlayStation 2 has enjoyed strong sales with active demand from first time buyers as well as repurchasing users, and with this, it has reached cumulative shipments of 20 million units in Japan (including Asia) as of end of March this year. This remarkable achievement of 20 million units comes within a little more than 5 years since PlayStation 2 was made available for the first time in March 2000, which is approximately 3 years faster than the original PlayStation®, launched in 1994. The Sony PlayStation 2 case THE SONY PLAYSTATION 2 The video games industry comprises both hardware (games consoles) and games software, much of it dedicated. This case discusses the rapid growth of Sony’s first video games machine in the mid-late 1990s - and which quickly became a major contributor to Sony’s profits - and the launch of its successor, PlayStation 2, in 2000. The launch was affected by temporary supply chain problems. This case looks at the possible impact of the Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft’s X-Box, both due for launch in November 2001. This case was written by John L Thompson in 2001 from a variety of published sources for the purposes of class discussion. It should not be taken to reflect either effective or ineffective management. INTRODUCTION Late in 2000 Sony was unable to satisfy the early demand in both the US and Europe for its new PlayStation 2 video games console. It was experiencing internal supply problems of critical components, a real setback in the run-up to Christmas, the peak sales period. The innovative Sony has typically striven to bring its new products to market as quickly as possible, laying it open to criticism that it will not get things 100% right. One rival, Sega, seized the opportunity this created to promote its newest model, the Dreamcast. The other main competitor, Nintendo, planned a new model launch in 2001. Microsoft was also planning to enter this market for the first time in 2001. In 1994 Sony had been a ‘non-entity’ in the video games market - but by 1996 it was the world leader of this fast growth market. -

Test de Vampire Night Vampire Night En dehors des Time Crisis et Survihor, on n’avait pas grand-chose à se mettre sous la dent au niveau des jeux de shoots sur ps2. Alors Namco et Sega décidèrent en 2002 de nous sortir Vampire Night dans lequel on devra combattre nos amis aux canines pointues (logique vu le titre vous me direz). Alors qu’en est-il de ce soft sanglant ? Déjà petite chose à préciser c’est que j’y ai joué avec la manette ps2 et non avec le flingue, de ce fait la perte de plaisir à jouer est assez grande. Les personnages principaux sont 2 tueurs de vampires, aussi charismatiques qu’une huître abandonnée au bord d’une plage déserte, qui arrivent pour on ne sait quel raison dans un village (enfin si, pour tuer le seigneur vampire mais j’aurai aimé une intro plus détaillé nous expliquant un peu plus en profondeur le background du jeu). Le héros que nous contrôlons est armé de son fidèle revolver et il n'est hélas pas possible de ramasser d'autres armes. Alors oui, de nouvelles armes seraient à débloquer dans les bonus mais je n’ai pas essayé. Le jeu est très linéaire et il n'y a pas de choix dans le parcours. Dans notre quête pour tuer le seigneur vampire, il faudra aussi épargner les innocents en tuant les parasites sur eux qui les transforment en goule. Le jeu est assez court et se termine en une trentaine de minutes. Concernant la difficulté c’est a vous de la régler en programmant vos nombres de vies et de continues, comme dans The House of the Dead.
