    City of Biddeford, Maine Open Space Plan Biddeford Pool Marshes & Wildlife Habitat Prepared by the City of Biddeford Open Space Committee November 2012 PREFACE When I was first asked to be on the Biddeford Open Space ad-hoc Committee by Marcel Polak of the Maine Association of Conservation Commissions on behalf of then, Mayor Joanne Twomey, I ĞŶƚŚƵƐŝĂƐƚŝĐĂůůLJƐĂŝĚ͞LJĞƐ͘͟ I was reasonably excited but cautiously optimistic. I have a very strong passion for land conservation and my knowledge of the subject is constantly evolving. After the introductions and brief conversations in our first meeting back in January 2009, the topic of the need for a chairperson came up. I now ƌĞĐĂůůĞǀĞƌLJďŽĚLJ͛ƐĞLJĞƐƚƵƌŶŝŶŐƚŽǁĂƌĚŵĞĂŶĚĂƐƚŚĞLJƐĂLJ͞ŝƚŝƐĂůů ŚŝƐƚŽƌLJ͘͟ I graciously accepted and the reality of taking charge of organization, delegation, research, setting meetings and pushing for a draft of the Open Space Plan took hold. Now, close to three years later, and countless number of meetings, walks, and drafts, we have an Open Space Plan for the citizens of Biddeford. As you read through this document, it is fluid and can be modified, added and changed. The data will need to be updated as time goes by. Parcels will be sold, merged, conserved, developed or remain the same. Land is static. dŚŝƐƌĞƉŽƌƚŝƐŐŽŝŶŐƚŽďĞĞůĞĐƚƌŽŶŝĐĂůůLJƌĞƉƌŽĚƵĐĞĚŽŶŝƚLJŽĨŝĚĚĞĨŽƌĚ͛ƐǁĞďƐŝƚĞ where changes can be made. We have had public input and we are looking for more feedback. Auger The son of French-Canadian immigrants, Gil has served the Town of Sanford for more than 50 years. First elected a town meeting member in 1963 while teaching French at Sanford High School, Gil helped SHS become the first accredited school in Maine. He then became Professor of French at Nasson College and was also elected a Trustee of the Sanford Sewage District. There he oversaw the upgrading of Sanford’s waste-water treatment plant to become the most state-of-the-art in the country. In 1974, Gil was appointed to Sanford's Board of Registration and was made chair in 1978. He became Registrar of Voters in 1981, a position he held until his retirement in 2007. In that time, Gil registered tens of thousands of voters and was an invaluable source of information as he could easily recall not only those he had registered, but their brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents.

Attendees had the pleasure of hearing from Jo Orlando, MCC director, Mick Rogers, Supervisor of Outdoor Recreation, Michael Ashmore from the Maine Commission for Community Service, Rex Turner from the Bureau of Parks and Public Lands, Lester Kenway from the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, Fern Burns form the Swan’s Island Summer 2013 Team Leaders at Recognition Lighthouse Committee. The ceremony was also graced with the presence of Anne Madore, Phil Gouzie, and Robert Poisson of the Maine chapter of the CCC Legacy. Madore and Gouzie had Team Leaders composed haikus, choreographed, and highlighted the accomplishments of their teams, and Program Coordinator Sara Knowles spoke about the season before everyone enjoyed lunch and, of course, cake. The 5th annual MCC Olympics & BBQ took place the night before, with events including MCC Jeopardy and the ever-popular pie eating contest. The Olympics ended in a tie between Roy’s tam and Nate’s team. The Senior Team Leaders devised a Sing-Off to break the tie, which Nate’s team declined and so forfeited. As a result, Team Leader Roy and his crew were crowned champions for 2013. Team Leaders Savannah Steele of Newberg, OR is a graduate of the MCC’s 2013 Trail Training Academy (TTA).
