Fresh Works @ The Alloy Studios Fridays 9/6 & 11/1 The Alloy Studios

Fresh Works is a new month-long learning program for Pittsburgh-based artists, arts administrators, and audi- ences who want to make connections between dance and the rest of the world. Each artist is given 80 hours at The Alloy Studios to research, explore, play, and finally share a performance on a first Friday in concur- rence with Penn Avenue Arts Unblurred.

Collected over 15 years of international travel, 17 Bor- der Crossings is a one-man show that weaves together real adventures of international border crossings into a dramatic examination of imaginary lines, arbitrary passports, and curious customs. It explores a world opened up by the fall of the Berlin Wall, sealed off by the events of 9/11, and re-imagined after the protest of a Tunisian fruit vendor who started the revolutions that became known as the Arab Spring.

Five characters take turns playing one contemporary Japanese playwright who confronts a younger version of himself and the ideas he once believed. It’s an absurd time- and space-bending show with singing rabbits and deadpan responses. The awkward and sometimes uncomfortable moments help define provocative ideas about philosophy, politics, and shelter.
