We spoke about the importance of GCC unity, which supports the security of the region as well,” he pointed out. “We also talked about the impor- tant opportunities for economic relationships. Tillerson said “the most recent transaction is of Kuwait upgrading its air force with the purchase of F/A- 18 aircraft”. “It’s very important for Kuwait’s defense, but also important for the integrated security of the region. I think there will be other discussions of future economic opportunities as well,” he added. Tillerson later urged allies to stay focused on fighting the Islamic State group at a ministerial meeting in Kuwait of the US-led military coalition that has been fighting IS in Iraq and Syria, being held in parallel with a conference on reconstruction in Iraq. The militant group has lost much of the territory it once controlled when it seized large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014. “The end of major combat operations does not mean we have achieved the enduring defeat of ISIS,” Tillerson said, using another acronym for IS. “ISIS remains a seri- KUWAIT: Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, EU Foreign Policy Chief Frederica Mogherini, Qatari Foreign Minister ous threat to the stability of the region, our homelands Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa pose with other officials for a group photo yesterday during a and other parts of the globe,” he said. ministerial meeting of member states of the US-led military coalition that has been battling the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. — Photo by Yasser Al-Zayyat Continued on Page 11 FM condemns Manila ban as MPs slam govt silence; hundreds of maids abscond By Ben Garcia, B Izzak and Agencies ship between Kuwait and the Philippines,” and recruit manpower from other countries. • Russian Men Dominate Day One in Calgary
February 7, 2020 Calgary, Canada Russian men dominate day one in Calgary Russia’s men have fired a warning message to their rivals ahead of next week’s world championships in Salt Lake City with a dominant display on day one of the fifth leg of the ISU World Cup in Calgary. Ruslan Murashov, Pavel Kulizhnikov and Viktor Mushtakov swept the podium in the opening 500m with the smallest possible margin between them, while teammate Denis Yuskov went on to triumph in the 1500m. In the ladies' tournament Nao Kodaira (JPN) took her first 1000m World Cup gold of the season in a season's-best time of 1:12.65 and 3000m winner Martina Sáblíková (CZE) is also looking in great shape as the season's climax approaches. Men's 500m: Russian 1-2-3 Kulizhnikov was the first of the Russians to take on the fast, high-altitude ice at the 1988 Olympic Oval in the second pair. The world-record holder, who returned to action in December after missing the first three World Cup events of the season, took on PyeongChang 2018 Olympic champion Håvard Lorentzen (NOR). Kulizhnikov left Lorentzen behind Quickly to finish just 0.05 seconds short of his own track record in 34.05. His Norwegian opponent, who has been struggling for form this season, clocked 34.61 to end up 15th. World Cup overall leader Mushtakov skated versus third-ranked Tatsuya Shinhama (JPN) in the eighth pairing. The Russian had the fastest opener of the field in 9.41, but could not match Kulizhnikov's 24.43 full lap and finished 0.01 short of his compatriot.

Russia dominated the men’s events on the first day, with Pavel Kulizhnikov and Denis Yuskov winning the 500m and the 1500m. Erbanova stays focused after winning ‘funny’ 500m Karolina Erbanova refused to get carried way after winning the ladies 500m at the ISU World Cup in Erfurt on Friday. “This is a funny distance,” she said. “There are maybe eight or 10 girls who can medal at every World Cup.” Erbanova beat Vanessa Herzog (AUT) in the 10th and final pair when she stopped the clock at 37.82 seconds at the Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemann-Halle. Herzog was just 0.10 slower to take the silver medal. “That was quite a good race if you take into account that I have been ill the whole week,” said Herzog. “It’s just a bad cough. It’s not really bad, otherwise I would not have raced here today. Tomorrow I’ll skate another 500m and maybe the 1000m on Sunday, but I don’t want to race too much because I want to get well as soon as I can to train for the (Olympic) Games.” Like Herzog, Erbanova gained confidence in the build-up to PyeongChang 2018.
