ZAKOPANE & THE TATRA MOUNTAINS Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains Travel to Zakopane, a mountain resort nestled at the foot of the Tatra mountains and boasting breathtaking views of Poland's countryside. Zakopane is the winter capital of Poland, thanks to its splendid natural scenery, its pistes and hiking trails, and a rich folk culture. You will begin your exploration of the area by taking the funicular railway to the top of Mount Gubałówka for views over the granite and limestone peaks of the Tatra Mountains. Having returned to the oldest part of Zakopane, we will visit the charming wooden old parish church and the most unique cemetery in Poland. To complete your experience, you have a chance to visit the enormous regional market and enjoy lunch in a regional restaurant serving local specialities. If you wish to find out more about this unusual region you can visit the Tatra Museum or the village of Chochołów (famous for its 150-year-old wooden log cabins and a serene atmosphere). DUNAJEC RIVER GORGE Discover the most spectacular gorge of Europe – the Dunajec River gorge. This, undoubtedly one of the Poland's prime tourist attractions, gives you a chance to admire some of the most amazing scenery in the Polish highlands. Usually referred to as "the raft trip down the Dunajec river", this is in fact a rather leisurely drift in large wooden punts. Highly experienced guides make sure you have a smooth ride and keep you informed about the sights you see and the history of the trips, which goes back to 1840s . The voyage down the winding Dunajec offers breathtaking views of mighty limestone cliffs plunging into the water as well as stunning native vegetation both protected by the second oldest international national park in the world. Also, while sailing down the river you can spot some rare bird species including the Black Stork. Another attraction of the tour is a visit to Niedzica Castle which was originally built in the 14th century by the Hungarians to protect an important trade through the Dunajec valley. Nowadays the castle towers over a large water reservoir and an impressive dam built in mid 90s. While visiting the castle you can admire the delightful view over the artificial lake and learn an amazing story of Inca refugees that found shelter there. Our trip begins at Niedzica Castle, then continues to the wharf in Sromowce Niżne and ends 15 km later in Szczawnica. The voyage lasts two to three hours, depending on the water level of the river. It is advisable to bring rainwear or a sun hat depending on the weather. CZĘSTOCHOWA – THE BLACK MADONNA Visit Poland's spiritual heart on a tour to the town of Częstochowa. Follow in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims as you gaze upon the "Black Madonna" at the Jasna Góra Monastery. Our tour takes you to the place which receives around 5 million visitors a year (including over 150 thousand pilgrims on foot). After arriving at the monastery we visit the chapel of the miraculous painting of Black Madonna, which is the embodiment of the attachment to the Cult of Mary so typical of the Catholic faith in Poland. Next we visit the Basilica, which is the main church of the monastery. You can also visit the 600th-Anniversary Museum and the Treasury on your own, if you wish, or attend Mass while others on the tour have a break for lunch and a visit to a souvenir shop. On the way back we alter our route slightly to admire the most spectacular limestone rock formations typical of the Kraków- Częstochowa Uplands.     Pieniny- The Great Little Mountains JERZY W. GAJEWSKI On the map of Poland, the Pieniny Mountains are over-shadowed by other mountains situated in the south of the country, along the Czechoslovakian border. However, the Pieninys with their pointed rocky hills provide a contrast to the landscape of the surrounding Flysch Beskidy Mountains. The landscape and natural beauty of the Pieninys have brought about their great popularity with tourists, especially ramblers, resulting in the establishment of the first Polish National Park there. In general, the Pieniny Mountains cover the area between the BiaTka River in the west (its source is situated above the White Water Valley on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains), and the Rozdziele Pass in the east, where they border on the Beskid Sadecki Mountains. The western part of the Pieninys, which culminate on Zar (879m), is called Pieniny Spiskie, because the surrounding territory - with its interesting villages, architecture, costumes and cusroms of the people - is joined to the Spisz region (part of this area is situated on the Slovak side, roo). This is where Dt;bno, the village with the famous St Michael's Church, is situated. This wooden church was built in the 15th century and its interior is covered with unusual and rare wall-paintings. 0 wonder Dt;bno church is a goal for most tourists who go to the Pieniny Mountains. The eastern part of the Pieninys, although being the highest, is called MaTe Pieniny (Little Pieniny). It culminates on the Wysoka (105 2m), at the foot of which are four conservation areas with short but beautiful gorges (the most famous is called Homole).

The majority of this geographical and, at the same time, cultural region is located in Slovakia, and only a small part is in Poland. The author discusses the Polish part of this region, which, as a result of nearly a century of its inclusion in Poland, has acquired a slightly different political, economic, and social character (formerly, the entire region belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary). Nonetheless, both the residents of this transborder region and those studying it can easily list certain shared elements with Slovak Spiš in terms of its language, customs, folklore, and material culture. This is also true regarding the regional mythology, which includes the legend of Juraj Jánošík, a local cultural hero whose origin has over time become an object of dispute between the Poles and Slovaks. The mythological dimension of this character is mainly limited to his ascribed role as a bandit that robbed the rich and helped the poor, much like (among others) Robin Hood; hence, his status is that of a cultural hero.

The 2001 program takes place in Eastern Europe. Academic Program The course will start with preparatory lectures by experts on the history, culture, and water resources projects of Eastern Europe.
