WWW.ROLLTIDE.COM This is Alabama Baseball COME-FROM BEHIND WINS (Since 1995) VIVA EL BEISBOL: The Alabama baseball team spent part of its Christmas vacation playing YEAR TOTAL 1995 21 a historic three-game exhibition baseball series against the Cuban All-Stars at legendary 1996 24 on Dec. 16-18, 2008 in Havana, Cuba. The series served as a 1997 29 learning experience for more than just the game of baseball. On the fi eld, the Tide ran 1998 25 1999 28 into a Major-League-quality team and despite two losses and one tie, the Tide held it own 2000 20 against a quality opponent. Alabama and Cuba played to a 3-3 tie in the series opener as 2001 14 freshman centerfi elder Taylor Dugas threw out the winning run at the plate in the bot- 2002 24 2003 19 tom of the ninth inning. The next two games Cuba used some timely hitt ing and a strong 2004 9 bullpen to beat the Tide 6-2 and 7-5. Alabama hit only .182 in the three-game wooden 2005 25 bat series, but launched the series’ only home run in game one when Matt hes knott ed 2006 18 2007 14 the score with a 2-run blast in the fourth inning. Junior Clay Jones was the Tide’s leading 2008 20 hitt er, going 3-for-6 (.500) in two games at fi rst base. The Cubans posted a 2.67 YEAR TOTAL 1995 10 ERA in the series and added 27 strikeouts in 27 innings en route to a pair of wins and two 1996 5 saves. Alabama was not overshadowed with its 3.46 ERA in three games. Much of the 1997 10 1998 6 damage against the UA pitchers came in the sixth inning of the fi nal game when Cuba 1999 13 scored six runs to erase a 5-1 defi cit. Alabama used 13 pitchers in the series, including 2000 6 seniors Austin Hyatt and Miers Quigley and freshman Adam Morgan as the starters. Ju- 2001 2 2002 6 niors Del Howell, Adam Scott and Scott Hays and sophomore Jimmy Nelson all had two 2003 2 appearances out of the bullpen. All–in-all it was a great experience for the Crimson Tide. 2004 3 It off ered a chance to bond as a team, see a diff erent side of life not seen in the United 2005 9 2006 6 States and a chance to improve its baseball skills against a quality opponent. 2007 4 2008 5 The 2009 season marks the 100th anniversary of the Crimson Tide’s fi rst 2009 1 CELEBRATIONS: baseball championship and the 75th anniversary of the Tide’s fi rst SEC baseball crown.
