This monograph conducts a historical study of the Army Amateur Radio System, the predecessor to the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS). MARS is primarily known for its performance during the Vietnam conflict in providing morale communications for US service personnel. In 2009, the Department of Defense changed the MARS mission to support homeland security functions by using MARS to provide backup emergency communications to local, state, and federal authorities. Viewed as a new direction for MARS, the responsibility of providing emergency communications is the same mission that was ably conducted by the Army Amateur Radio System prior to the United States entry into World War II.

The ARRL supports reasonable efforts to mitigate orbital debris. In addressing the problem of space debris, however, the Commission must tailor its regulations for the amateur satellite service so that they are appropriate for this service -- and do not inadvertently impair the service’s continuing vitality by applying rules crafted for commercial satellite services. The purely private and non-profit experimenters in the amateur satellite service, governed by Part 97 of the Commission’s Rules, have substantially different regulatory needs than the commercial entities that are governed by Part 25. The radio amateur space experimenters’ needs are consistent with the need for mitigating space debris, but require provisions that are modified from those applied to commercial space entities. In this regard, the ARRL supports the Comments submitted by the Radio Amateur Satellite 1 FCC 18-159, 84 Fed.Reg. 4742 (released Feb. 19, 2019). Corporation (AMSAT).     Bandwidth a Myth? -- Should bandwidth be a primary component in the regulation of digital amateur radio communication and more broadly as a primary component in the regulation of any amateur radio mode? -- The basic idea of radio frequency regulation is that a station is allocated a specific (carrier or center) frequency and a surrounding range of frequencies for the modulation (i.e., intelligence carried on the carrier). For CW (“Continues Wave” or pulse) this is simple. The CW modulation is the carrier being turned on and off for the modulation (with some allowance for the fact that pulsed square-wave on-and-off carrier does occupy more frequency space than a simple unmodulated carrier). For AM (Amplitude Modulation) the carrier stands in the middle and the variable (audio) modulation being added above and below the carrier. SSB (Single Side Band) is AM minus the carrier and one side of the audio modulation. FM (Frequency Modulation or phase modulation) is moving the carrier off center in response to the modulation. This all can easily be graphed in Cartesian coordinates with frequency on the x-axis and amplitude on the y- axis for the paniscope display, or frequency on the x-axis and time on the y-axis for a waterfall display. [It is not necessary to digress into spreadspectrum or other more complex modulation modes for the purposes of this comment. It should be noted than when the time clock is slowed way down, frequency hopping spreadspectrum and trunk- ed radio systems reveal communication on preallocated frequencies being used.] For most radio services, the license from the spectrum regulator gives the licensee access to one assigned frequency (plus and minus a modulation width and some guard band space) or several assigned frequencies.

There are certain limitations to the simple technique, which are discussed. Actual experimental data was gathered over the air (not mere theory) for several compressed messages. Results demonstrate the Raspberry Pi performs reasonable well when given a modest low-power advantage over the special- purpose modem, given a "floor" on how much the special purpose modem can cut down the available "margin." But that isn't the biggest news from these actual experiments. These experiments demonstrated, for the first time, an instance where the independently monitoring Raspberry Pi actually captured a portion of the message, while the intended recipient disconnected and received nothing , using standard WINLINK software.

    A short history of amateur radio Mark Pecen, VE3CPK/VE3QAM 1 Early wireless – the 1860’s through early 1890’s • By the year 1850, most electrical phenomenon had been investigated by academic researchers • James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge introduced a new model for examining both electrical and magnetic phenomena in around 1861 • His new mathematical model, today referred to as Maxwell’s equations, predicted that there might be the existence of electromagnetic waves • Later in 1891, Heinrich Hertz in Germany and Alexander Popov in Russia both gave a practical proofs of concept, demonstrating Maxwell’s theory – sending electromagnetic waves across a distance of about 1 metre • Operating frequencies during this period in history were around 100 MHz, due to the small size and value of resonant components 1892 – Nikola Tesla files the first wireless patents • High frequency generators for producing continuous waves • Coupled and tuned circuits, today a version of his “Tesla coil” still exists • Rotary and series spark gaps • Oil-insulated transformers and condensers. • Mica capacitors impregnated with wax under vacuum • Stranded conductors ("Litzendraht”) • Aerial and ground connection • Selective tuning by beat waves or heterodyning • Arcs for producing continuous waves • "Ticker" for receiving continuous waves. 1896 – First practical wireless system • First practical wireless demonstrated by Marconi, 'Hertzian Waves' over two miles! • When Marconi learned about the experiments of Heinrich Hertz

    Radio on the Rio Amateur Radio in Socorro, New Mexico And the Socorro Amateur Radio Association By Dave Finley, N1IRZ Preface It now has been nearly a year and a half since, in a moment of weakness, I accepted the task of compiling a history of the Socorro Amateur Radio Association and of ham-radio activity in Socorro. The task brought numerous surprises as I learned new aspects of our city’s amateur-radio heritage. The first surprise came upon learning how far back that heritage goes -- to the year 1930. Though it was not a surprise, I was once again reminded during the compilation of this history just how active Socorro’s hams have been and the notice that our city has received in the amateur-radio world. This history is, however, certainly incomplete. There are long periods of time for which I could find no records and in which there undoubtedly were local hams and local ham activity. Thus, as with any history, this must remain a work in progress. I hope that new sources of information come to light and help fill in the gaps in this record. I also urge the officers and members of SARA to preserve documents, minutes, newsletters and other original sources of information for future hams. As new information surfaces, I hope to be able to revise this work and fill in some of the gaps. My deepest appreciation goes to those who responded to my emails, answered my questions, and provided documents for this project. Most of these sources are cited in the references.
