19TH-CENTURY TOP TEN ASIAN TOP TEN A striking feature of the top 19th-century art shows is that only half of them were monographic; in previous years single-artist Japan’s appetite for blockbuster exhibitions and the richness of its exhibitions have monopolised the list. It is not surprising, given cultural heritage resulted in its museums producing seven of the top ten the media attention accorded him during his bi-centennial, that shows in our Asian category. But China's marching army of terracotta Darwin made what will surely be his unique appearance in the warriors (pictured left) means that a US institution, the High Museum of annals of attendance figures. The Musée d’Orsay made it to the Art, Atlanta, is fifth on the 2009 Asian list. The National Museum of top ten with three hits, albeit rather predictable crowd-pleasers: Korea, Seoul, which is taking part in our survey for the first time, cele - pastels, Rodin and photography. Ensor at MoMA, New York, brated the centenary of Korean museums with an exhibition that put it in appealed to a mood for the macabre, and was an important seventh place. The Tokyo National Museum improves on its runner-up reassessment of the artist’s late career. Left, Hiroshige, 53 ranking in 2008 with a show of temple treasures from Nara, making it Stations of the Tokaido , 1833, at Museo Fondazione Roma. D.L. overall the most visited exhibition our survey.
