HORIZONTAL LOOP ELECTROMAGNETIC , 444 HZ......

HORIZONTAL LOOP ELECTROMAGNETIC , 1777 HZ...... SUMMARY

Noranda Mining and Exploration Inc. ( former Noranda Exploration Company Limited ) conducted an exploration campaign on their Comstate-Reid property in Reid Township, 35 km North-North-West of Timmins, . The field work included line cutting, magnetics, and electromagnetic survey (HLEM).

Previous exploration campaigns outline favourable geology for VMS deposit, similar to Kidd Creek volcanic belt. A public domain airborne Mag-EM survey released by the OGS ( Timmins survey, 1988 ) outlined numerous EM conductors on Comstate-Reid property.

This geophysical campaign aimed to delineate electromagnetic conductors at the property scale on an existing line grid established prior to the geophysical field work. Two bedrock conductors were outlined during this campaign, of which one may correspond to sulphides mineralisation. It is recommended to extend the survey to the West prior to any follow-up on that conductor. Additional field work has to be conducted during the winter season since the presence of Mattagami River do not allowed any extension to the actual ground geophysics. INTRODUCTION

A ground geophysical campaign was performed on Comstate-RekJ property in November 1994 for the behalf of Noranda Exploration Company Limited. The field work was completed by Rayan Exploration Ltd., from Timmins, Ontario.

The exploration campaign consisted in line cutting, magnetic, and electromagnetic surveys. The ground geophysics aimed to detect the occurrence of conductive sulphides mineralisation associated with the presence of volcanic rocks.

PROPERTY . ACCESS

The property is located in Reid, Carnegie, and Mahaffy Townships, 35 km North-North- West of Timmins, Ontario, in Porcupine Mining Division. The actual field work was performed in Reid Township.

The property can be accessed from Timmins via gravel roads from highway #655. ( figure 1) . Twenty (21) claims were covered with ground geophysics and line cutting ( figure 2 ). Those are:

The field work was performed by Rayan Exploration, from Timmins, in November and December 1994. The line cutting started on November 24 and ended on December 5, 1994. A total of 17.3 km were cut and picketted every 25 meters.

The magnetics and electromagnetic ( HLEM ) were performed on December 6, 8, and 9, 1994. A total of 15.0 km were covered with both methods by the same contractor, Rayan Exploration Ltd.

MAGNETIC SURVEY SPECIFICATIONS

The magnetics was surveyed with a pair of magnetometers: a running unit; and a static unit used as a base station. The latest was used in order to compensate for diurnal magnetic variations. Therefore, the final magnetic relief, after corrections applied, depends only on variations of the magnetic susceptibility in the subsurface.

The magnetometers are build by EDA Instrument, of . The running unit and the base station are both OMNI Plus models. Reading were taken systematically at 12.5 meters interval, at 2.0 meters above the ground level. The base station was monitoring the total magnetic field with reading intervals of 30 seconds.

The results are reported along the surveyed lines on a surface map at a scale of 1:5,000. The values represent the total field subtracted by 58,000 nanotesla prior to the posting. The magnetic field was contoured at intervals of 50 nanotesla.

ELECTROMAGNETIC HLEM. SURVEY SPECIFICATIONS

The electromagnetic survey, namely HLEM, was carried out with an Apex Parametrics unit which consists of a receiver and a transmitter, linked together by a reference cable of 200 meters. The measurements represent the vertical component of the induced field in the subsurface, expressed in 0X) of the primary field. Readings are measured in- phase with primary field (IP ), and out-of-phase ( OP ), that is 90 degrees offset with respect to the primary field.

Both coils were maintained horizontally during the survey. Since the topographic relief is flat, the coils were kept in the same plan ( coplanar geometry ). Readings were taken every 25 meters systematically on every line, with two frequencies: 444 and 1777 Hz. Values are reported mid-way between coils. MAGNETIC RESULTS

The magnetic interpretation takes into account the actual results and also those of previous surveys performed on Comstate-Reid property. Those are not included in this report, however they were merged prior to the interpretation.

There are two main trends outline by the magnetics: an East-West direction, caused by magnetic volcanic flows; and a North-Northwest trend caused by diabase dikes. The latest are running sub-parallel to the surveyed lines, therefore they are poorly sampled by the actual coverage. However, the merged magnetics allow to infer adequately the position of those dikes in between lines.

ELECTROMAGNETIC RESULTS

The electromagnetic survey was performed on the same lines as the magnetic survey. Because of the report point mid-way between the receiver and the transmitter position, a gap of 100 meters is left blank at both ends of each surveyed lines.

Abrupt variations of the overburden thickness cause strong positive responses. Those are outline as overburden ridges on the profile map of the 1777 Hz frequency. The amplitude of those responses are enhanced at higher frequencies.

Two metallic conductors were detected, namely conductors A and B. The first one extends between lines LO+00 and L2+OOW. It is open to the East since LO+00 is the limit of the survey. Its conductivity-thickness product was estimated with the low frequency values on line LO+00, CM-SON, with a phasor diagram for a vertical thin half- sheet At that station the conductor has a value of 6.0 Siemens, and its depth is 45 meters. Since the south part of the conductor was not totally measured, Its dip angle estimation is not accurately determined. However, the Northern cross-over indicates that we are dealing with a sub-vertical conductive lens. No magnetic correlation is observed, therefore the conductor is most likely caused by a graphitic horizon.

Conductor B is outlined in the Northwest comer of the survey, on lines L21+OOW and L23+OOW. On the latest line, only two anomalous readings were measured since it is the end of the surveyed line. The estimated conductivity-thickness on L21+OOW, 7+OON, is 4.0 Siemens. The depth of the conductor is 30 meters beneath the surface, and its dip angle is approximately 75 degrees to the North. A weak magnetic peak corresponds to the conductor on L23+OOW at 8+OON. There is potential for sulphides occurrence on that line. The survey should be extend to the North and to the West, towards Mattagami River, prior to any follow-up on conductor B. CONCLUSION

The actual geophysical campaign allowed the detection of two bedrock conductors on Comstate-Reid property. Conductor A appears to be caused by a graphitic horizon, since no magnetic correlation is observed. Conductor B was poorly covered by the survey, but it outlines potential for the occurrence of sulphides mineralisation. The same geophysical coverage should be extended towards Mattagami River in order to delineate the surface expression of the conductor.
