  • Gary Numan - Hammersmith Apollo, London - November 28, 2014
1 Gary Numan - Hammersmith Apollo, London - November 28, 2014 by Mireille Beaulieu Original French version © Obsküre magazine - http://www.obskuremag.net http://www.obskuremag.net/articles/gary-numan-live-hammersmith-apollo-londres- 28112014/ Gary Numan’s recent concert at London’s Hammersmith Apollo had long been announced as a major event. This show was the crowning moment of the world tour Numan had undertaken in October 2013, as he was promoting his new album Splinter (Songs from a broken mind ). Undoubtedly one of the artist’s major works, Splinter garnered unparalleled public and critical acclaim. It even entered the UK Top 20 – the first Numan album to do so since Warriors in 1983. Gary Numan started this long tour in the US before visiting the UK, Ireland, Israel, continental Europe (but sadly not Paris), Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Photos: Louise Barnes and Jim Napier © Jim Napier 2 But it was also a “homecoming concert”, a return to his roots for Numan, who currently resides in Los Angeles. For the first time since 1996, he was to take over the Hammersmith Apollo, the legendary UK venue formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon. This is where David Bowie killed off his Ziggy Stardust character in 1973... Around the same period, a teenage Gary (then still Gary Webb) would often attend gigs there. Then, with the explosion of the Numan phenomenon in 1979, the “Hammy” became for many years the London venue of his choice when he was touring. Gary, who was born in Hammersmith, obviously has a deep connection with the place.

  • A Conversation with Gary Numan & John Bergin Mike Ragogna
A Conversation with Gary Numan & John Bergin Mike Ragogna: John and Gary, what brought the two of you together for film From Inside? John Bergin: Gary had just moved to LA and was looking to learn about film scoring. There is no greater place to learn about the world of film music than Lakeshore Records where I am Art Director, so that's where we crossed paths. At the time were preparing From Inside for release after a three year tour playing festivals. When Gary came by to introduce himself, it was perfect timing that we were looking for a final score to the film. For Gary, scoring From Inside was a great way to introduce himself to the process. For me, it was literally a dream come true, having been a long-time fan of his work. Gary Numan: When I first moved to the US I introduced myself to a few people to let them know I was very interested in working on film and TV music. A few days after, I met with Brian McNellis at Lakeshore I had a phone call saying that they were interested in working with me on a special edition of John's From Inside animated movie. It was exactly what I was looking for. John was familiar with my music so it was a low pressure introduction for me into the requirements and skills of film score writing. It seemed to me that I would learn a lot, without somebody screaming at me and beating me with a large stick, which is exactly what happened.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Erase Me”: Gary Numan’s 1978-80 Recordings John Bruni ary Numan, almost any way you look at him, makes for an unlikely rock star. He simply never fits the archetype: his best album, both Gin terms of artistic and commercial success, The Pleasure Principle (1979), has no guitars on it; his career was brief; and he retired at his peak. Therefore, he has received little critical attention; the only book-length analysis of his work is a slim volume from Paul Sutton (2018), who strains to fit him somehow into the rock canon. With few signposts at hand—and his own open refusal to be a star—writing about Numan is admittedly a challenge. In fact, Numan is a good test case for questioning the traditional belief in the authenticity of individual artistic genius.

  • There Are Really Few Artists Like Gary Numan. a Really Small Number of Them Can Attribute a Wide Variety of Music Styles to Their Own Account
There are really few artists like Gary Numan. A really small number of them can attribute a wide variety of music styles to their own account. From synth pop, new wave and darkwave to funk rock and industrial. Few of them have wealthy experience of 40 long years on the music scene. Over the course of his career, Numan has released over 20 full-length albums and toured the world far and wide. Not without a reason he’s acquired the moniker of the godfather of industrial rock and the pioneer of commercial electronic music. After having released the warmly-received Savage (Songs from a Broken World), Gary Numan commenced a world tour that included more than 100 shows all around the world. At the end of last year, Numan talked to Kvlt Magazine in an interview in which he spoke about i.a. the recent world tour and the beginnings of Tubeway Army. The artist didn’t avoid the topic of his health state and past ventures. Answers to these questions can be found in the transcript below. 1. Hi Gary! Your current tour is inevitably coming to an end. Could you already make a quick summary of it? Did any of the gigs particularly engrave in your memory? We’ve played 115 shows in support of the Savage album so far, and we have about 15 still to do, so it’s been a very intensive period of touring. The most I’ve ever done for any album before in fact. We’ve played in huge venues, tiny clubs, festivals, and everything in-between, in about 20 different countries.
