The routes of precontact inland trails are no longer known well due to the decimation of the local population in the 18th and 19th centuries. Industrial logging is threatening to destroy archaeological evidence of the inland trail network, and therefore this inquiry is timely. The largest and most topographically diverse island, Graham, has been the subject of many archaeological impact assessments that have documented hundreds of archaeological sites, most of them containing culturally modified trees.

    BCTS Chinook Business Area FSP Supporting Document Haida Gwaii Natural Resource District 2019-2024 August 2019 1. Purpose & Audience: The purpose of this document is to provide the statutory decision maker with supporting information an documentation that guides the interpretation of BCTS’ Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) for Haida Gwaii. This document also serves to support the implementation of the FSP by Qualified Professionals (as defined in the Clarifications section of the FSP) and Timber Sale Licence (TSL) holders, and is intended to provide clarification on the measurability, verifiability and relevance of results and strategies outlined in the FSP. In preparing the FSP and this supporting document, BCTS has reviewed and considered the District Manager’s Letter of Expectation (LOE) (July 25, 2016), the Chief Forester’s Guidance on the Replacement of FSPs (March 2016) and comments from Solutions Table, the public and BCTS staff. Because forest stewardship guidance is constantly evolving, this document may be updated from time to time and new versions may be issued to address updated information or guidance. 2. Application of the District Manager’s Expectations Letter: The expectations in the Chief Forester’s letter (Appendix 1) state that the District Manager should consider the content of the guidance letter in respect of local context and incorporate relevant sections in their expectations letter. The District Manager’s LOE (Appendix 2) incorporates the Chief Foresters guidance in the context of the unique management framework on Haida Gwaii. BCTS, in the preparation of the FSP and this supporting document, has considered this guidance in the following ways: New Information: BCTS has made specific changes to the FSP by adding or augmenting sections on Cedar Stewardship Areas (CSA’s), climate change, visual quality, yew management and public engagement.

The analysis of impacts on potential timber harvesting activity relies substantially on timber supply forecasting models developed for HG/QCI by Gowlland Technologies Ltd. and Cortex Consultants Inc. In developing the socio-economic estimates prepared for this study, the consultants have made several forecasts and assumptions utilizing information gathered under the time and resource constraints imposed on this study. Socio-economic impact assessments are subject to a high degree of uncertainty, particularly as forecasts extend over periods of several decades. The forecasts and assumptions utilized herein are thought to be reasonable and suitable for the purposes of this analysis, but should not be relied upon for other purposes.

    THE BALLAD OF THE BOLD NORTHWESTMAN : AN INCIDENT IN THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN JOHN KENDRICK* The ballad of the Bold Northwestman, once a prime favorite in the forecastles of the maritime trading vessels, gives an account of an incident in the life of one of those whose name was well known in New England ships and New England homes-Captain John Kendrick. The mere fact that the ballad does not mention his name may almost be taken as evidence to SUppOlt this state­ ment; it certainly was not omitted for the sake of rhyme or metre, with both of which the balladist takes more than the usual liberties. Captain John Kendrick commanded the expedition of the Columbia and the Washington, the first vessels from Boston to engage in the maritime fur-trade. In July, 1789, (for what reason is not as yet ·definitely known) he handed over the ship Columbia to Captain Gray and for the remainder of his life sailed the little sloop, Wash­ ington. In her he reached China in January 1790. There he trans­ formed her into a brig (or, more probably, a brigantine) and sailed again for the Northwest Coast in March 1791. In June 1791 the Indians of Houston Stewart Channel, in the southern part of Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, attempted to capture his little vessel. This waterway has borne many names; the maritime traders lefer to it as Koyah's, Coyah's, Coyour's, after the Indian chief of the locality who figures in the ballad, though not by name. Captain Robert Gray, in June, 1789, when in command of the sloop JlVash­ ington, had called it Barrell Sound, after his principal owner.

This is where the tremendous outflow of water from Massett Inlet clashes with north and westerly winds creating a conflict which lashes out on the waters. The close proximity to the shelter of Masset Inlet gives a false sense of security and many boats have been lost there.” “The shoreline and a narrow strip of forest that quickly turns into muskeg. These forests continue to be used as they have over the millennium though remain as old growth forests. This area is heavily used for hunting, fishing, food gathering, medicines, seaweed picking and vision quests. The coastline is a natural trail between Massett Inlet and Naden Harbour that includes the beach and forest routes.     "Nins tints9 'Village: A Case of Mistaken Identity* STEVEN R. ACHESON The Kunghit or "Southern" Haida village of Ninstints is located on a small island off the exposed southwest coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands. To the original inhabitants, the village was "SgA'ngwa-i lnaga'-i" — Red Cod Island Town. Subsequent to the close of the maritime fur trade, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the village became known as "Ninstints," after the then recognized head chief. The village was significant in size, with a population of 328 people, including 20 slaves, living in 20 houses (Douglas, 1853).1 The island in turn was designated "Anthony Island" during a British survey of the region in 1853, approximately thirty years prior to the abandonment of the village. SgA'ngwa-i village is the only Kunghit settlement generally thought to have been a multi-lineage village for at least part of its history. The village is credited, beginning with Howay (1941 :gj) and most recently MacDonald (1983), as the setting for an exceedingly violent episode in the history of the maritime fur trade on the Northwest coast. This paper contends that, although this conflict involved lineage heads historically associated with this community, the setting was not Anthony Island. * This study draws upon a number of projects conducted over the years at Anthony Island. Accordingly, it involves many individuals and agencies for whom space does not permit adequate acknowledgement. Credit is first given to Richard Beauchamp of the Conservation Division, B.C. Provincial Museum, who introduced the writer to the southern Queen Charlotte Islands.

    CAPTAIN SIMON METCALFE AND THE BRIG "ELEANORA."* In the various attempts to piece together something of the life-stories of those whose names are so frequently mentioned in the records of the early days of the maritime fur trade, no atten­ tion appears to have been given to this interesting man and his vessel. These few notes covering a part of the years 1789-1794 are offered as a contribution to a connected and detailed investi­ gation of his operations. In October, 1795 John Boit, the master of the sloop Union, met the celebrated John Young at Kawaihae, from whom he learned many things concerning the ships and the men engaged in the maritime fur trade. If he correctly understood and correctly reported that information it may hereafter be found that Simon Metcalfe in the brig Eleanora was not only among the first of the United States traders on the Northwest Coast of America, but also the first-the pioneer. In his "Remarks on the Voyage of the Sloop Union,"l Boit writes: "It appeared that Captain Metcalf had purchased this small vessel [the Fatir American] at Macao after his arrival at that port in the Elenora from the NW Coast and did there fit her with the Snow for the Coast again and gave the command of her to his eldest son". Plainly this refers to the year 1788 and shows that Metcalfe had been trading on the American coast in the season of 1788, thus pre­ ceding the Columbia and the Washington which did not arrive un­ til September, 1788.
