La Altagracia, Holy Land of America, founded in 1494 by the conqueror of Jamaica, Juan Esquivel, and populated from 1502 to 1508 by the captain of the conquest Juan Ponce de León, is the mecca of the largest pilgrimages of the Altagracia flock that goes every year on January 21 to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Altagracia in search of health and spiritual well-being.

The province of La Altagracia is located in the east of the Dominican Republic, bordered to the north by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the , to the east by the Canal de la Mona and to the west by the provinces of La Romana and El Seibo. It has an area of 2,998 km2.

In 1969 a group of American investors acquired a property with the objective of exploiting the power of the area, in 1971 they inaugurated the hotel "Punta Cana Club". Given the growing investment in the area, in 1986 a presidential decree declared Punta Cana as a national tourist pole. It is characterized by its beautiful and limpid white sand beaches.

It began operations in 1983. It is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and the second busiest in the Caribbean. It has direct flights to more than 26 countries, 64 cities and 90 airports around the world. It received 50% of passenger arrivals to the Dominican Republic in 2019.

Cap Cana Port

The Cap Cana Marina captured 1.8% of the cruise passengers that entered the country in 2019. It has 130 docks and capacity for yachts up to 150 feet. It is characterized by having a marina where international fishing tournaments have been held.

Indicators

With the passage of time and the development of this exceptional tourist pole, there has been a steady increase in the number of tourist accommodation rooms in this area, with greater emphasis in 2016, with a year-on-year increase of 12%.

In 2019, the Punta Cana tourist area alone will account for around 50% of the country's hotel rooms. More than 23 hotel chains have operations in the area, equivalent to 120 hotels.

It is estimated that in the next five years more than 34 projects will be completed in this area. 20 tourism real estate projects, which would add around 2,600 rooms, 12 hotel projects that would add 6,617 new rooms, and two apartment hotel projects, which would add 222 rooms to the housing supply.

The estimated investment amounts to US$1.707 billion. Of this investment, 36% is Mexican/Dominican, 23% Spanish, and 15% Spanish/Dominican.

Marina Casa de Campo

The Casa de Campo Marina is among the most prestigious marinas in the Caribbean and is perfectly located where the Chavon River meets the Caribbean Sea, within the Casa de Campo resort. The marina can accommodate up to 350 yachts from 50 to 250 feet in length. Marina Cap Cana

The Cap Cana Marina captured 1.8% of the cruise passengers that entered the country in 2019. It has 130 berths and capacity for yachts up to 150 feet. Inside the Marina there are gourmet restaurants and elegant boutiques, with a waterfront area considered one of the best for fishing worldwide.

La Altagracia province has natural monuments, national parks and wildlife refuges that make it a splendorous destination, like all those in the Dominican Republic.

At the close of 2019 more than 728,000 people visited these protected areas. Of these visits, 96% were foreigners and the rest were Dominican nationals.

MONUMENTO NATURAL HOYO CLARO

This protected area located in the province of La Altagracia, extends for about 9 km in a north-south direction, covering an area of 42 km2.

It includes an area of wetlands with lagoons, bulrush meadows and palm forests located in the coastal plain of the eastern region, in the area of Verón, near Punta Cana.

LAGUNA DE BÁVARO Y EL CALETÓN

Declared a protected area in 1995, the Laguna Bávaro and El Caletón Wildlife Refuge is part of an extensive area of wetlands between Macao and Cabo Engaño.

It covers an area of 6.9 km2 and has two main bodies of water: the Bávaro Lagoon and the El Caletón Lagoon. The refuge has scenarios and attractions for the development and promotion of sustainable tourism, which can be used as complementary offers.

JEEP SAFARIS: All hotels and resorts offer different types of jeep, truck and military 8-wheel drives. These vehicles will take you "inland" through rivers and country roads. On October 9, 2001, the National Congress approved Law No. 158-01 on the promotion of tourism development for the poles of scarce development and new poles in provinces and localities of great potential, with the purpose of accelerating a rationalized process of development of the tourism industry in all the regions with potential and natural conditions for their tourism exploitation throughout the Dominican territory.

In the referred law, the Tourism Development Council (CONFOTUR) was created, with the purpose of implementing the guidelines of Law No. 158-01, as well as creating the necessary conditions and facilities so that innovative tourism projects may benefit from the incentives granted by the law.

Decree No. 372-14 created the Technical Directorate of CONFOTUR, in charge of handling all technical matters derived from the application of Law No. 158-01 and its amendments. The files requesting Classification, in order to benefit from the terms of Law 158-01 and its amendments, must be sent through the CONFOTUR web page by completing the Application Form. The Technical Direction will carry out the technical and legal evaluation of the projects and will be in charge of recommending to the Council the exemptions for each application it evaluates.

A Classification, whether Provisional or Definitive, is nothing more than the approval by the Council for the Promotion of Tourism (CONFOTUR) of a given tourism project as eligible for the benefits and incentives of the Law.
