3 INLEIDING INTRODUCTION

Het kortﬁlmfestival “Leuven Kort” heeft een hele weg afgelegd. Van een improvisoir inderhaast georganiseerd no-budget kortﬁlmavondje tot een professioneel festival met een internationale faam. Het festival heeft sinds enkele jaren weliswaar een zekere stabiliteit kunnen bereiken - op vlak van locaties, personeel, bezoekcijfers - maar dat is niet steeds zo geweest. De afgelegde weg was een behoorlijk hobbelig parcours.

“Leuven Kort” was dan ook het enige Vlaamse kortﬁlmfestival in die jaren. Aan de andere kant van de taalgrens en in zo goed als alle Europese landen bestonden kortﬁlmfestivals al erg lang -soms al tientallen jaren- maar Vlaanderen was braakliggend terrein; geen festivals, geen circuit, geen videouitgaven, geen websites, geen persaandacht en geen publiek. In den beginne was er niets...

De organisatie richtte haar pijlen resoluut op een zo breed en groot mogelijk publiek. Promotie en communicatie stonden toen -en ook nu nog- centraal. Zonder publiek geen festival. Van alle hindernissen bleek dit, achteraf beschouwd, de eenvoudigste. Jaar na jaar groeide de belangstelling, bijna explosief zelfs: van 450 bezoekers in 1995 tot bijna 4.500 in 1999. Dat is ook niet zo verwonderlijk. Het potentieel was er immers: de kwaliteit van de kortfilms was bijzonder hoog die jaren. Het was gewoon zaak ze op een gepaste manier te presenteren: goede vertoningsomstandigheden, geen marathonvertoningen maar korte verteerbare compilaties en een “publieksvriendelijke” selectie. Al die jaren zijn die krachtlijnen in essentie dezelfde gebleven. Het kortfilmfestival heeft nog steeds als doelstelling een plek te zijn waar kortfilmmakers hun werken in optimale omstandigheden presenteren en de confrontatie aangaan met het brede publiek.

De moeilijkheden situeerden zich voornamelijk op het vlak van praktische organisatie -gebrek aan goede locaties- en -wat had u gedacht - budgetten. In essentie kwam het er op neer dat “Leuven Kort” organisatorisch en op vlak van publieke belangstelling veel sneller groeide dan de toegekende overheids- steun, steun die een ﬁlmfestival in een klein landje als het onze nu eenmaal nodig heeft om te overleven. Daar is verandering in gekomen in 2001. Na een korte onderbreking in het jaar 2000 (het festival werd toen wegens gebrek aan budget niet georganiseerd, er kwam wel een online festival onder de naam “Leuven Kort Virtueel”) groeide ook bij de overheden het besef dat het festival ﬁnaal dreigde te verdwijnen. In het jaar 2001 - het jaar dat minister Anciaux de bevoegdheid over Cultuur kreeg- kwam de Vlaamse Gemeenschap over de brug. “Leuven Kort” kreeg volle erkenning; het festival kon weer aan de toekomst beginnen denken.

Sinds 2002 vaart het festival een ietwat nieuwe koers; “Leuven Kort” mikt sindsdien niet enkel op het brede publiek maar nu ook gerichter op de professione- len uit de audiovisuele sector en profileert zich consequent als filmtalentenjacht. “Leuven Kort” versterkte tevens haar internationaal profiel: de internationale programma’s krijgen een voorname plaats op het festival, er wordt intensiever geprospecteerd op collega-festivals in heel Europa en jaarlijks mag “Leuven Kort” een sterk groeiende groep internationale gasten ontvangen. En praktisch is er de afgelopen jaren ook heel wat veranderd: het festival beschikt met Kunstencentrum STUK over de gedroomde festivallocatie en beschikt sinds 2002 over personeel én kantoren het jaar rond.

“Leuven Kort” is zonder enige twijfel een ander festival dan tijdens die eerste jaren. Die verandering van eigenheid heeft niet zozeer te maken met profes- sionalisering of verhoging van budgetten - die was weliswar noodzakelijk om te overleven - wel met de gewijzigde houding tegenover het festival en kortfilm in het algemeen: waar er de eerste jaren voornamelijk gevochten werd tegen de bestaande vooroordelen tegenover de kortilm, tegen het negatief imago van het genre, is dit nu volledig verdwenen. De kortfilm zal nooit een massaal publiek aantrekken, maar het weze duidelijk dat de kortfilm vandaag de dag een behoorlijk goed imago heeft bij een breed cultuurminnend publiek. Bovendien heeft “Leuven Kort” van nature en implicitiet -als grootste kortfilmfestival van Vlaanderen- een andere onuitgesproken opdracht gekregen. Het festival moet een representatief beeld geven van wat leeft in de creatieve broeinesten van de audiovisuele sector. Die “representativiteit” is -de laatste jaren- essentieel geworden. “Leuven Kort” selecteert weliswaar streng, maar promoot geen specifiek genre, schuift geen stroming naar voren, kiest niet voor een niche. Diversiteit staat centraal. “Leuven Kort” is een talentenjacht voor iedereen die professioneel met kortfilm/video bezig is en biedt een representatieve staalkaart van wat leeft.

The “Leuven Kort” Short Film Festival has come a long way: from an improvisatorial and hurriedly organised no-budget short ﬁlm night to an internationally acclaimed professional festival. It has reached a certain stability for a few years now – regarding location, staff, visitors – but things have not always been so prosperous. The road travelled has been fairly bumpy.

“Leuven Kort” was the first Flemish short film festival during those years. On the other side of the language barrier and in just about every European country, short film festivals had been part of the game for a long time – some for decennia – but Flanders was new to the business: no festivals, no circuit, no video releases, no websites, no attention from the press, and no audience. In the beginning, there was nothing.

From the start, the festival aimed at an audience as big and wide as possible. Advertising and communication were crucial – as they are, today. No audience, no festival. Out of all the obstacles, in hindsight this one proved to be the simplest. Year after year, the attention grew, and almost came to an explosion: from 450 visitors in the very first year to almost 4,500 in 1999. Looking back now, this does not seem too much of a surprise, because there was immense potential: the short films were of a remarkably high quality in those years. It was a matter of presenting them accordingly: good screening circumstances, no marathon programmes but short compilations easy to digest, and an “audience-friendly” selection. Over the years, the basics have remained the same. The short film festival still devotes itself to the purpose of creating a place where short film-makers can present their work in excellent circumstances and engage in the confrontation with a wide audience.

The difﬁculties mostly had to do with practical organisation – a lack of good locations – and – what else did you have in mind – budgets. In essence, it can be stated that “Leuven Kort” grew much faster in organisation and public attention than the grant-in-aid it was provided with, which a ﬁlm festival needs to survive in a small country like ours. The much needed breakthrough followed in 2001. After a short break in the year 2000 (the festival was not organised due to a lack of funding, but there was an online festival, named “Virtual Leuven Kort”), the governments realised that the festival was in danger of disappearing completely. In 2001 – the year minister Anciaux became responsible for Culture – the Flemish Community reached out and provided “Leuven Kort” with the recognition it deserved. The festival could look forward the future again.

Since 2002, the festival has moved into a somewhat newer direction: not only does it direct itself to the “wide audience”, but also, more specifically, to the professionals from the audiovisual sector. In addition, it keeps working on its own image as a film talent scouting. “Leuven Kort” has also strengthened its international profile: the international programmes are given prominence at the festival, other festivals all over Europe are visited elaborately in search of more talents, and every year the festival is host to an ever-growing number of international guests. Practically as well, the past few years much has changed: the festival has found its dream location in arts centre STUK, and now has fully staffed offices throughout the whole year.

Without any doubt, “Leuven Kort” has become a different festival from the one it started out as. This is not so much due to growing professionalism or a raise of budgets, but mostly to an altered attitude towards the festival and short film in general: where, in the first years, the goal was mainly to fight the existing prejudices against short film and the genre’s rather negative image, this is now no longer the case. Short films will never attract the attention of a massive audience, but it is clear that it has managed to conquer a place in the hearts of today’s culture vultures. Additionally, “Leuven Kort” has been given another, unspoken mission as Flanders’ biggest short film festival. It is expected to give a representative view on the talents that are alive in the audiovisual sector. This “representativeness” has grown essential, especially over the last few years. “Leuven Kort” does, of course, make strict selections, but it does not try to promote any genre, or choose a certain style. Diversity is a basic rule. “Leuven Kort” is a talent scouting for everyone who is working with short film or video on a professional basis, and it wants to offer a representative introduction to the field.

Er werden 53 werken geselecteerd uit een recordaantal van 200 Vlaamse inzendingen. De Vlaamse Kortfilmcom- petitie wordt opgesplitst in vier verschillende onderdelen: fictie, animatie, documentaires en videoclips. Wie met de prijzen aan de haal gaat, bepaalt ú en de jury. “Leuven Kort” has selected the best live action and animated short films, short documentaries, and music videos of the past year. A total of 53 short films were selected from a record number of 200 Flemish entrances. However, the only ones to decide who will be awarded, are you and the jury. Dit competitieluik bevat zowel “professionele” (meestal gesubsidieerde) kortfilms als (eind)werken van filmstudenten uit de verschillende filmscholen. Opvallend: het afgelopen jaar werden erg veel professionele producties gerealiseerd. This competition presents “professional” (mostly subsidized) short films, as well as (graduation) projects by students at several film schools. A lonely and estranged astronomer, Frits is looking for life on other planets in the hope of getting the friendship he cannot ﬁnd on earth. As an egg is dropped on his head one day, his lonely life is ﬁlled with hope. Convinced that there is an alien in the egg, he decides to hatch it...

WO I: Een gewonde soldaat deserteert... In een huisje aan de rand van de oorlog wonen Seppe en zijn moeder. Zijn enige vriend is Brutus, een wit konijn. Op een dag vindt Seppe de gewonde soldaat, bewusteloos onder een boom. De soldaat wordt in huis genomen en verzorgd. Even ontstaat er een nieuw gezin. Maar dan belandt Bru- tus in de pot. Seppe voelt zich verraden. WW I. A wounded soldier leaves the war grounds.. Seppe lives with his mother on the verge of the war. His only friend is Brutus, a white rabbit. One day, Seppe ﬁnds the wounded soldier, unconscious, under a tree. The soldier is taken in, and is given the care he needs. It seems a new family is born, but then Brutus is prepared for dinner, and Seppe feels betrayed.

Een man en een vrouw, Frank en Alex, laten alles en iedereen achter en trekken naar zee voor een privé - weekendje. Al snel wordt echter duidelijk dat er van privacy geen sprake is: Franks ‘andere leven’ blijft opduiken. Alex kan dit niet aan en lijkt te breken. In een daad van wanhoop neemt ze Frank als gijzelaar. Ze weet echter dat ze de grens van normaal gedrag overschreden heeft en ze beseft dat ze Frank altijd zal moeten delen. De volgende ochtend is Alex verdwenen, maar ze laat een kleine herinnering achter voor Frank.. A man and a woman, Frank and Alex, are leaving everything and everybody behind for a private weekend at the seaside. But soon it becomes clear that privacy is not what they are getting, as Franks “other life” keeps intruding. Alex seems to crack and as an ultimate act of despair, she takes Frank as her hostage. Knowing she crossed the line of accepted behaviour and ﬁnally realizing that she will always have to share Frank, the next day, Alex is gone. But she left Frank a little reminder..

On the 3rd of June 1968 Factory member Valeria Solanas shot Andy Warhol - three bullets in the chest. Een schilderij ophangen, een kaartenhuisje bouwen, de was doen en televisiekijken: uiterst onschuldige en schadeloze acties in het dagelijkse leven van vier gewone mensen. Deze mensen hebben pech, maar hun grootste ongeluk is naast elkaar wonen. Soms is een verre vriend meer waard dan een goede buur. Hanging a painting on the wall, building a house of cards, doing the laundry, and watching TV: utmost innocent and harmless actions in the daily lives of four ordinary people. But of all the bad luck, these people had to live next to each other. Sometimes a far friend is worth more than a good neighbour.

“Leuven Kort” selecteerde 5 documentaires, allemaal (afstudeer)projecten van ﬁlmscholen. Zoals altijd is het menu gevarieerd, maar verwacht vooral geen harde onderzoeksjournalistiek. De klemtoon ligt op persoonlijke, soms intieme, maar altijd intrigerende verhalen. “Leuven Kort” selected 5 short documentaries, all of which were (graduation) projects produced by ﬁlm schools. The programme is well balanced, as usual, but don’t expect any hardcore journalism. The focus is on mostly personal, sometimes intimate, but never any less than intriguing stories. PROGRAMMA

De Europese competitie neemt een belangrijke plaats in op “Leuven Kort” en geniet op internationaal vlak een steeds grotere bekendheid en waardering. Dat merken we onder meer aan het hoge aantal inzendingen. Niet minder dan 450 regisseurs uit alle uithoeken van Europa legden hun kortfilm voor aan het programmatieteam. We selecteerden voor u de 20 beste films. The European competition plays an important part at “Leuven Kort” and continues to grow more famous and valued internationally. In de loop van de jaren vinden beide kinderen het spel ‘Mìkles’ uit: hun eigen overlevingstechniek om aan de mishandeling van hun vader te weerstaan en hen tegelijkertijd te helpen om op eigen benen te staan. This is the story of a brother and sister, Sergio and Maria, told backwards in time, from adulthood to childhood. It’s Natan’s ﬁrst day at his new job. The employment ofﬁce has sent him to Viggo’s hamburger joint. Münir is trying to teach him the moves, but Natan is a disaster waiting to happen. Viggo sacks him and Natan is back on the street again. But Viggo’s con- science comes back to haunt to him, he grabs a hot dog and goes looking for Natan.

ZOE ET LES PACHYDERMES (Rémi Hatzfeld) België / 2003 / 16 min

Zoë is nog steeds vol bewondering door de verhalen die haar vader bij iedere gelegenheid verzint. Wanneer ze vaders hersenspinsels naspeelt op de speelplaats, jaagt het kleine meisje haar schoolgenootjes schrik aan en wordt ze ondervraagd door de schooldirectrice. In plaats van de misverstanden op te helderen, versterken de antwoorden van Zoë de vermoedens van de volwassenen. Door deze confrontatie concludeert Zoë dat de wereld uit twee clans bestaat. Het uiterst zeldzame exportproduct van het bedrijf zal nooit geëvenaard worden. Rare Exports Incorporated is an imaginary, traditional Finnish family business. We follow three of their employees in their annual toil with the aim of preparing an international best-selling product for its journey from the Lapp wilderness to the world’s end. It is a long and wearisome process, but absolutely worth every drop of sweat. The employees are the absolute elite of their trade, the extremely rare export asset of the corporation will always be without an equal.

1 MINUTE FILM & SOUND AWARDS

Vzw De Zwerver organiseert in september het driedaags muziekfestival “Leffinge- leuren”, de klassieke afsluiter van het zomerfestivalseizoen. Ieder jaar integreert de organisatie de ‘1 minuut film & sound awards’ in dit evenement, een wedstrijd voor filmpjes van 1 minuut waarbij de soundtrack even belangrijk is als het beeld. De invulling van de twee elementen film en sound laten men verder volledig over aan de creativiteit van de maker zelf. Uit de 150 ingezonden filmpjes selecteerde de organisatie van Leffingeleuren er 30. “Leuven Kort” vertoont de hele selectie. In September, De Zwerver NPA organizes the three day music festival “Leffingeleuren”, the end of the classic summer festival season. Every year, the organisation integrates into this event the ‘1 minute film & sound awards’, a competition for 1 minute films in which soundtrack is as important as image. The use of the two elements of film and sound is free to the maker’s creativity. From the 150 entrances, Leffingeleuren’s organisation selected 30 films. “Leuven Kort” screens the entire selection.

MACHINIMA

Machinima-films worden gemaakt met graphics gegenereerd door computers, zoals je kan zien in bvb. “Antz” en “Toy Story”. In tegenstelling tot deze films die gemaakt zijn met de ‘traditionele’ CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) en miljoenen dollars kosten, maakt Machinima echter gebruik van engines van 3D-computergames om zijn visuals te gene- reren. Zo kan een filmmaker dus thuis aan zijn eigen pc langspeelfilms creëren, dankzij het feit dat hij alles “in real time” kan maken, in plaats van elk frame afzonderlijk te animeren. Eens een Machinima-film klaar is, kan hij bovendien ook verspreid worden op het internet terwijl andere films wegkwijnen op een videotape of in blik. Machinima zit als kunstvorm nog in zijn beginfase, met slechts een klein groepje aanhangers, maar het kan een revolutie voor de film betekenen. Iedereen kan vanaf nu een filmmaker worden: elke mogelijke film ligt nu binnen handbereik. In short, a film made using Machinima is a film made with computer-generated graphics, as you can see in titles like “Antz” and “Toy Story”. However, unlike those features, Machinima uses graphical techniques originally developed for computer games to generate its visuals, meaning that a film-maker with a home PC can create feature-length epics that would require millions of dollars to make using traditional CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) techniques, thanks to the fact that the Machinima film-maker can make his or her film in real time, rather than painstakingly animating frame by frame. In addition, the film can easily be distributed over the internet, rather than languishing on a video or in a can. Machinima as an artform is still in its infancy, with only a small number of devotees, but it can revolution- ise film. For the first time, anyone can become a film-maker and create any film they can imagine.

Ter gelegenheid van de 10e verjaardag compileerde “Leuven Kort” de hoogtepunten uit een decennium festival. De meest opvallende, ontroerende, vernieuwende, bevreemdende, indrukwekkende, grappige en zonder uitzondering steengoede films in 10 hoofdstukken. De films werden verdeeld in 4 programma’s professionele films (Life - Strange Stories - Love - Big Cities) , 3 programma’s eindwerken van filmscholen (Bittersweet - Twisted Fiction - Reality Bites), 2 programma’s animatiefilms (Animagic 1 en 2) en 1 programma prijswinnaars van de Europese Kortfilmcompetitie 2001-2003. For its 10th birthday, “Leuven Kort” has compiled the highlights from its 10 past editions: the most striking, moving, renew- ing, stupefying, impressive, funny and, most of all, good films were put together in 10 chapters. The films were divided into 4 programmes of professional films (Life - Strange Stories - Love - Big Cities), 3 programmes of film school graduation projects (Bittersweet - Twisted Fiction - Reality Bites), 2 programmes of short animation (Animagic 1 and 2) and 1 programme of the European Short Film Prize winners of 2001-2003.

De verborgen muziek in de huishoudtoestellen wacht om tot leven te worden gebracht. Six drummers take part in a well organised musical attack in the outskirts of the city. When an elderly couple leaves their ﬂat, the drummers take over. Using every day objects - from toilet brush to microwave -, they perform a concert at four locations: kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room. The hidden music in the household appliances is waiting to be brought to life.

MARK COSGROVE (UK) Mark Cosgrove is curator van het succesvolle Watershed Media Centre in Bristol (UK), dat zich tot doel stelt om hedendaagse film en digitale kunst voor een groter publiek toegankelijk te maken. In Watershed vindt ook het International Short Film Festival Brief Encounters plaats, één van de belangrijkste kortfilmfestivals wereldwijd, waarbinnen Cosgrove actief is als programmator. Net als Internationaal Kortfilmfestival Leuven Kort viert het festival dit jaar haar tiende verjaardag. Mark Cosgrove is head of exhibition for the successful Watershed Media Centre in Bristol (UK), which exists to provide opportunites for all to experience, enjoy and learn about contemporary moving image media. Watershed is also host to the International Short Film Festival Brief Encounters, one of the most important short film festivals world wide, for which Cosgrove is the artistic director. Just as the International Short Film Festival Leuven Kort, Brief Encounters celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

CHRISTOFFER OLOFSSON (ZWEDEN) Christoffer Olofsson (° 1971) is sinds 1999 programmator voor het Uppsala International Short Film Festival, het oudste en belangrijkste kortfilmfestival van Zweden en het belangrijkste internationale culturele festival in Uppsala, waar elk jaar meer dan 200 producties uit verschillende disciplines worden getoond. Olofsson studeerde Film Studies aan de universiteit van Stock- holm en kunstgeschiedenis aan de universiteit van Uppsala. Hij werkt eveneens als freelance filmcriticus. Since 1999, Christoffer Olofsson (° 1971) has been the programme director for the Uppsala International Short Film Festival, Sweden’s premier arena for short film and the most important cultural event in Uppsala, where over 200 productions from several sections are screened every year. Oloffson attended Stockholm University, Department of Film Studies, for two years, before moving back to his hometown to study three years of Art History and Aesthetics at Uppsala University. He is also working as a freelance film critic.

RUBEN NOLLET (B) Leuvenaar Ruben Nollet is ﬁlmjournalist en criticus voor De Tijd, Studio Brussel en VRT. Ruben Nollet is a ﬁlm journalist and movie critic for the Flemish quality newspaper De Tijd, as well as for the radio station Studio Brussels. He also appears on national television.

FELIX VAN GROENINGEN (B) Felix Van Groeningen (° 1977) studeerde in 2000 af aan KASK Hogeschool Gent. Hij maakte verschillende kortfilms, zoals ‘Truth or Dare’, ‘50cc’ en ‘Bonjour Maman’. In 2004 oogstte hij veel succes met zijn langspeeldebuut ‘Steve + Sky’. Van Groeningen werkte samen met het collectief Kung Fu ook mee aan diverse multimediale jongerentheaterstukken als ‘Best Of’ en ‘Discotheque’ voor het Gentse theaterhuis Victoria, waarmee getourd werd in verschillende Europese landen. Felix Van Groeningen (° 1977) graduated at the Ghent film academy, KASK, and made several short films, such as ‘Truth or Dare’, ‘50cc’ and ‘Bonjour Maman’. 2004 was his year of glory, when his first feature film, ‘Steve + Sky’ was well received by audiences and critics alike. ILSE SOMERS (B) Ilse Somers studeerde zowel aan het RITS als aan de Columbia University in New York, waar ze afstudeerde als Master of Fine Arts in 1990. Sinds 1995 doceert ze scenario en werkt ze als consultant. Ze schreef het scenario voor onder meer ‘Olivetti 82’ en ‘Suske & Wiske: De Duistere Diamant’. Somers viel in de VS in de prijzen met haar korte documentaire ‘Joey- Joey’, maar ook in eigen land werd haar werk bekroond: voor haar kortfilm ‘Sancta Mortale’ ontving ze de eerste prijs voor beste Vlaamse kortfilm op het Internationaal Filmfestival van Gent in 1997. Ilse Somers was educated at RITS Brussels and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, Film Division, New York in 1990. In 1995 she started teaching screen- writing and took up working as a consultant. She wrote several screenplays, including ‘Olivetti 82’ and ‘The Dark Diamond’, after the successful albums of Spike and Suzy. Her work was awarded both in the USA and in Belgium: her short documentary ‘Joey-Joey’ won prizes overseas, and in October 1997 her short film ‘Sancta Mortale’ won the first prize at the Ghent International Film Festival.

After the counting of the votes and the meeting of the “Leuven Kort” Jury, the winners of the competitions will be revealed. 75 DVD “10 JAAR LEUVEN KORT” DVD “10 YEARS LEUVEN KORT”

Naar aanleiding van de 10e verjaardag van het festival geeft “Leuven Kort” een unieke compilatie-DVD uit. De DVD bevat 21 titels, samen goed voor ruim 4,5 uur ﬁ lm.

De 21 fi lms op deze DVD zijn een selectie uit de ruim 380 Vlaamse kortfi lms die het festival de afgelopen jaren vertoonde. Het zijn fi lms met een reputatie: de meesten vielen meer- maals in de prijzen, een aantal onder hen maakten wereldwijd furore.

Samen vormen ze een mooie staalkaart van wat de Vlaamse (kort)ﬁ lmmakers in hun mars hebben. Het is een perfecte introductie tot het medium en laat je ken- nismaken met de creatieve broeinesten van de Vlaamse ﬁ lm.

Een aantal regisseurs kent u wellicht van de langspeelﬁ lm(s) die ze maakten, van anderen zal u ongetwijfeld nog horen.

De DVD “10 jaar Leuven Kort” werd gelanceerd in het kader van een grote spaaractie van De Morgen.

Spaaractie gemist? Geen probleem: deze DVD is ook gewoon verkrijgbaar in Fnac, tijdens het festival en via de festivalwebsite, vanaf 18 november. De prijs be- draagt 20 euro.

For its tenth anniversary, “Leuven Kort” will release a unique compilation DVD, on which 21 short fi lms (selected from the 380 Flemish short fi lms that have been screened at the festival the past years) are collected. The DVD offers a great introduction to contemporary Flemish short fi lm, but unfortunately, it will only be available on the Belgian market or via the festivalwebsite.
