    So, You Want to Be an Umpire? David Vincent Modern umpires like to be invisible on the field and consider it a good day when no one remembers them after a game. There have been days, though, that are memorable ones. Here are some of those days. *** In 1882, National League Umpire Dick Higham, a former player, was expelled from the game for colluding with gamblers. He had been the first umpire to wear a mask on the field. Higham umpired his last game on June 22, 1882 in Buffalo. *** On June 19, 1896, the Chicago Colts (now Cubs) were in Cleveland to play the Spiders. The latter team was well known around the league for acting in a rowdy manner. In the seventh inning, Umpire Tom Lynch fined and ejected Cleveland Captain Patsy Tebeau, who refused to leave. Tebeau instead rushed at Lynch to assault the umpire but the two were separated by other players. Lynch refused to work the rest of that game and left the field. After a long delay, the game resumed with Chicago player Con Daily calling the pitches and Cleveland player Cy Young making the calls on the bases. Tebeau remained in the game and Chicago’s Cap Anson protested the game because Tebeau remained in the contest even though he had been ejected. Chicago won the game, 8-3, so the protest was not lodged. After the game, Lynch told a reporter: “I suppose I should not have permitted my indignation to get the better of me, but after all there are things that pass human endurance, and one of them surely is to be called vile names.” Lynch refused to work in Cleveland after that and did not until 1898.

    A Short History of Ejections David Vincent In 1889, the baseball rules were changed to allow an umpire to remove a player from the game for an offense. Previously, the arbiter could only fine such player. The new rule allowed the umpire to eject a player for the repetition of any finable offense. The fine system had started in 1879. The first person to be ejected was Dave Orr of the Columbus Colts of the American Association. He was upset about a call at 3B by umpire Fred Goldsmith on May 25, 1889 and was told by the arbiter that his services were no longer required that day. Seven days later, Buck Ewing of the National League’s New York Giants was tossed for foul language directed at umpire Wes Curry. Ewing was the first NL player to be ejected. Between 1924 and 1946 in the NL and 1907 and 1952 in the American League, a person ejected from the first game of a double header was disqualified from the second game. Before those rules were put in place, several players were ejected from both games played in one day. Jesse Burkett is the first known player to be ejected from both games of a double header. This occurred on August 4, 1897 when Burkett’s Cleveland Spiders were in Louisville. Burkett was tossed in each game for arguing about the strike zone with umpire Jimmy Wolf. Since this is our double size year-end issue, it is fitting that I address two issues, first a comment on the SABR convention and Retrosheet annual meeting and then the most significant financial decision in Retrosheet's history. The annual meeting of Retrosheet for 2000 took place during the SABR convention in West Palm Beach in late June. We had an excellent turnout, with nearly 100 people in attendance; see David Vincent's report elsewhere in this issue for the details. In addition to the annual meeting, Retrosheet was very much in evidence throughout the convention. The research aspect of SABR saw about 30 oral research talks and another 10 poster presentations. I took great pride in noting that seven of the lectures and four of the posters had Retrosheet data as a major part of what was presented, with very nice credit given to David W. Smith us in each case. This list includes Doug Pappas, who won the award sponsored by Baseball Weekly President for the best research presentation for his talk on the history of ejections. The publicity for our organiza- tion is always appreciated, but I am even more pleased by the way our information is becoming such a standard, not only for statistical analyses, but for more traditionally historical projects as well. The financial matter arises from a decision the Board made to expand the content our web site and increase our control over it.
