The novels and the trilogy as a whole are largely comic, but while there are droll and sometimes antic activities and characters, the comedy is of a larger, Chekovian sort—almost Buddhist—where individual striving appears vain and even misguided. Having lived for a while in that part of the world, I recognise many of the attitudes against which this story is based as still existing. With so many gifts, there is now one more thing that Burgess needs: a critical and receptive audience. Indeed, The Long Day Wanes is peppered liberally with terms in Malay, Hindi, Sanskrit, Chinese and Arabic — all languages that Burgess was, remarkably, fluent in — to the point of requiring a lengthy glossary at the back. Otherwise this episode is concerned with the promiscuous, egocentric Rosemary, the beautiful, though black, Malay who is English educated and will do anything for a marriage to a European. If such a drama were to be shown now with that type of ethic division there would be outraged cries, not wholly unjustified, of racism. On the face of it, it seems that the sadistic excesses of the teenagers of A Clockwork Orange are to be preferred to the living death of the suburban-provincial England described in The Right to an Answer. Furthermore, the plot seems to be going at a tangent at times after we lose Victor Crabbe's wife but I presume that's because we are dipping in and out of the lives of other supporting characters who are trying to make their way in what will be a new country. He probably yawned in bed with his wife…. The novel's dislike of racism is apparent, and Burgess skewers it in all its forms: the colonisers' contempt for the colonised and vice versa, the various inter-ethnic hatreds among the Malayans, the overweening love of certain Malayans for their colonisers Music and language, trademarks of his writing, are naturally not far away. Burgess celebrates Malayan diversity—Chinese, Tamil, Indian, Malay, and English peoples; Muslim, Jainist, Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian religions; and at least five languages—and he suggests that any sort of governance in the country would be little better than herding cats. I very much admired Burgess's ability to capture character with only a few lines of dialogue, and I found the book difficult to put down even when reading it by headlamp under the mosquito net in my hammock after a long, hot day of jungle walking! A new character, Rupert Hardman, is a very light skinned Englishman who is trying to start a law practice and because of his finances, is coerced into marrying a wealthy Malay woman, whose previous husbands were shot by Communists just before they were to leave the country. The storyline takes place against the backdrop of a changing Malaya - it is post war and the country is moving towards independence and seeking the emigration of the ruling western colonists. The trilogy tracks the fortunes of the history teacher Victor Crabbe, his professional difficulties, his marriage problems, and his attempt to do his duty in the war against the insurgents. The storyline probably represents the mourning of the past and the unwelcome changes of the future. Like Lim Cheng Po, many of us scorn our mother tongues and put on unfamiliar accen How odd is it that a foreigner describes my country more wholly and better than any Malaysian writer I've read? These three books cover the fate of a married Englishman who goes to teach in South East Asia and loses everything. Throughout the novel, Burgess presents and unmasks racial and cultural stereotypes, fulfilling and subverting them often on the same page.

    Anthony Burgess: Composer of Comic Fiction DAVID McNEIL, McMaster University Anthony Burgess was both a composer and a linguist long before he became a writer,1 and the question that critics should be asking is what has Burgess con­ tributed to the contemporary novel in light of this dual background? The answer seems to lie not in his latest novel Earthly Powers (1980), nor in his virtuoso exper­ iment Napoleon Symphony (1974), but in his early work where cultural conflicts, represented by the Tongues of Babel, are finally resolved in a comic reconciliation. The fallen world is resurrected by a vision of harmony that is based upon the mythic and musical patterns of life—and also upon man's capacity to laugh at his own inadequacies, his forked tongue being the most important of these. Classified as "British," the nomadic Burgess is really an international figure who speaks several languages and has lived in several countries since he left Britain for good in 1968. The last twenty years of refugee and third world immigration has produced a swirl of shifting cultures in North America and Britain. With the potential for cultural conflict greater than ever, Burgess's comic vision of an aggregate musical harmony arising out of cultural diversity is a badly needed one. Ironically, this vision is best expressed in two pre-1968 novels and has its roots in his Malaysian experience of the 1950s.2 Joyce was the first modernist to structure a piece of fiction on a musical form when he wrote his fugal "Sirens" episode in Ulysses, and Burgess has commented at length on Joyce's "Musicalization."3 Then came Aldous Huxley's Point Counter Point which was a simpler adaptation of the fugue form—many characters acting out a number of parallel or contrapuntal plots.

As a talented and an inventive person, he was very interested in art and its creative processes. Anthony Burgess’s artistic creativity concept can be traced in most of his works on fictional and non-fictional writers (e.g. William Shakespeare, John Keats and Christopher Marlowe in novels titled nothing Like the Sun: A Story of Shakespeare’s Love Life respectively). The present paper analyzed the image of artist on the basis of Enderby novels, and a tetralogy about a contemporary fictional English poet named Enderby. The analysis indicated that the artist was a craftsman, whose artistic activity was closely connected with his sexual attraction, in Anthony Burgess’s opinion. Furthermore, the author was characterized by the isolation as the main condition for the creative process and the total devotion to art. Works of literature also contain a structure of values which informs and underlies our factual statements, described also as the ways in which what we say and believe connects with the power structure and power-relations of the society we live in. In the 21푠푡 century, works of literature still comprise modes of feeling, valuing, perceiving and believing which have some kind of relation to the maintenance and reproduction of social power, more so in the wake of the 4푡ℎ Industrial Revolution (4IR). The multilingual Anthony Burgess Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) read and / or spoke Farsi, French, German, Italian, Malay or Jawi, Russian, Spanish and Welsh with varying degrees of fluency, in addition to his native English in which he published. He was also interested in Chinese and Japanese. He learnt Spanish during a three-year wartime posting to Gibraltar from 1943-46. He explained to the Spanish translator of Earthly Powers (1980) in 1982 that he “then spoke it well. I now speak it badly but I can still read it --- with some help from a dictionary”.1 He then learnt Jawi over his four years in Malaya and Brunei in the mid- to the late 1950s, during which he wrote The Malay Trilogy. In 1942 he married Llewela or Lynne Jones (1920-68), from an Anglo-Welsh but non-Welsh speaking background with whom Burgess translated a trio of French novels in the early 1960s. Burgess maintained an active interest in translation throughout his creative life.2 His second wife Liana Macellari (1929-2007) was a translator from English to Italian. The couple lived first in Malta from 1968-70, then spent most of their time in Italy 1970-75 before moving to French-speaking Monaco near the Franco-Italian border up to Burgess’s death in 1993.
