John Halama Returns to Blue Crabs for Playoffs John Halama Returns to Blue Crabs for Playoffs Posted by petehurrey On 09/21/2009 Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Butch Hobson has announced that starting pitcher John Halama has returned to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for the 2009 Atlantic League Playoffs, after finishing the season with the Gwinnett (GA) Braves of the Triple-A International League. Halama had his contract purchased from the Blue Crabs on June 13 by the Atlanta Braves, after making nine starts for Southern Maryland this season with an 8-1 record as the most dominant starter in the Atlantic League. Halama has Major League experience in nine seasons from 1998 through 2006. Halama was named the Atlantic League’s Pitcher of the Month this season for games played in April and May. His eight wins led the league at the time of his departure, as did his 66.0 innings pitched. The lefty earned a winning decision in his first seven starts of year, striking out 37 and walking just 13. Halama’s earned run average of 2.05 placed him second in the Atlantic League as well. With Gwinnett this season, Halama appeared in 16 games, making 13 starts for the Braves. Tossing 90.1 innings total for Atlanta’s Triple-A club, he carried a 3.69 ERA 75.2 innings pitched as a starter. He compiled 54 strikeouts opposed to 33 walks, holding International League opponents to a .267 batting average. With a career Major League record of 56-48, Halama made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 1998, going 1-1 in six starts. Halama was then sent to the Seattle Mariners in October of that year, as the player to be named later in the trade that sent hurler Randy Johnson from Seattle to Houston before the trade deadline earlier that season. Halama would spend the next four seasons on the Mariners roster, amassing a 41-31 record in 130 appearances and 81 starts from 1999 through 2002. Through free-agency, Halama would go on to suit up in the big leagues for the Oakland Athletics (2003), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2004), and the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals in 2005. Halama’s most recent season in the Major Leagues came in 2006, when he went 3-1 in 17 appearances and a start for the Baltimore Orioles. Halama spent the 2007 season with the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League and made 26 starts, before transitioning to the expansion Blue Crabs for 2008. After sparkling in eight starts, going 4-1 with a microscopic 1.91 ERA, Halama was inked to a deal by the Cleveland Indians and assigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons of the International League. He would prove to be just as dependable for Buffalo, notching 16 starts with an 8-6 record and two complete games. Halama has put together an impressive 133-97 record at all levels in his career. He was originally drafted by Houston in 1994, and made his professional debut that summer in their organization at Class A Auburn in the New York-Penn League. The lefty has 492 strikeouts at the Major League level. For those interested in attending the Blue Crabs first play off games can check out availability and schedules here. LHP Halama Returns To Blue Crabs For Playoffs Posted by TBN On 09/19/2010 For the second year in a row, starting pitcher John Halama is back with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for the Atlantic League Playoffs. He returns to the Blue Crabs after finishing the Pacific Coast League season with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in the Oakland Athletics organization. Halama also pitched for the Blue Crabs in the 2009 Atlantic League Playoffs upon completing the regular season at Triple-A Gwinnett in the Atlanta Braves farm system. Last season Halama went 2-1 in the playoffs, including a spectacular performance in Game 1 of the Liberty Division Championship Series against the Long Island Ducks September 24 at Regency Furniture Stadium. He pitched eight shutout innings, striking out four with no walks allowed. The Blue Crabs earned a 1-0 victory that night, and defeated the Ducks 3-2 in the best of five series to advance to the 2009 Atlantic League Championship Series. Halama began this season in Southern Maryland, going 2-2 with a 1.62 ERA through six starts before the Athletics purchased his contract from the Blue Crabs on May 22. Halama was immediately assigned to Sacramento, where he went 6-2 with a 5.44 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 18 games and 14 starts. A veteran of nine Major League seasons, Halama made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 1998, going 1-1 in six starts. Halama then went to the Seattle Mariners in October of that year as the player to be named later in the trade that sent Randy Johnson to Houston earlier that season.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Brooklyn's Finest: John Halama Returns To Blue Crabs Posted by TBN On 04/13/2010 Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Butch Hobson has announced the official signing of 16-year veteran pitcher John Halama. This will be Halama’s third season with the Blue Crabs after he began 2008 and 2009 in Southern Maryland before being picked up by Major League organizations. The 6’5 left-hander has big league experience in nine seasons. In 2008, Halama went 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA in eight starts, before signing with the Cleveland Indians on June 3. At Triple-A Buffalo he carried an 8-6 record with two complete games in 16 starts. Last season he had another stellar stint with the Blue Crabs, going 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA and four complete games in 10 starts. He held opponents to a .250 average, and had a three-to-one strikeout to walk ratio (39 K’s and only 13 walks). Halama helped the Blue Crabs achieve the second lowest team ERA in the league (4.10). He parlayed those remarkable numbers into a contract with the Atlanta Braves on June 13. At Triple-A Gwinnett he tossed 90.1 innings in 16 games and 13 starts. Halama broke into the majors with the Houston Astros in 1998 before being traded to the Seattle Mariners prior to the 1999 season, as the player to be named later in the deal that sent pitcher Randy Johnson from Seattle to Houston. Halama would also pitch for the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles through 2006.

  • HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY the 2019 Season Signifies the 42Nd Season for the Nashville Sounds
HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.
