London and Middlesex in the 1660S Introduction: the Early Modern
London and Middlesex in the 1660s Introduction: The early modern metropolis first comes into sharp visual focus in the middle of the seventeenth century, for a number of reasons. Most obviously this is the period when Wenceslas Hollar was depicting the capital and its inhabitants, with views of Covent Garden, the Royal Exchange, London women, his great panoramic view from Milbank to Greenwich, and his vignettes of palaces and country-houses in the environs. His oblique birds-eye map- view of Drury Lane and Covent Garden around 1660 offers an extraordinary level of detail of the streetscape and architectural texture of the area, from great mansions to modest cottages, while the map of the burnt city he issued shortly after the Fire of 1666 preserves a record of the medieval street-plan, dotted with churches and public buildings, as well as giving a glimpse of the unburned areas.1 Although the Fire destroyed most of the historic core of London, the need to rebuild the burnt city generated numerous surveys, plans, and written accounts of individual properties, and stimulated the production of a new and large-scale map of the city in 1676.2 Late-seventeenth-century maps of London included more of the spreading suburbs, east and west, while outer Middlesex was covered in rather less detail by county maps such as that of 1667, published by Richard Blome [Fig. 5]. In addition to the visual representations of mid-seventeenth-century London, a wider range of documentary sources for the city and its people becomes available to the historian. -

Never made public before It was about the beginning of September, 1664, that I, among the rest of my neighbors, heard in ordinary discourse that the plague was returned again in Holland; for it had been very violent there, and particularly at Amsterdam and Rotterdam, in the year 1663, whither, they say, it was brought (some said from Italy, others from the Levant) among some goods which were brought home by their Turkey fleet; others said it was brought from Candia; others, from Cyprus. It mattered not from whence it came; but all agreed it was come into Holland again. We had no such thing as printed newspapers in those days, to spread rumors and reports of things, and to improve them by the invention of men, as I have lived to see practiced since. But such things as those were gathered from the letters of merchants and others who corresponded abroad, and from them was handed about by word of mouth only; so that things did not spread instantly over the whole nation, as they do now. But it seems that the government had a true account of it, and several counsels were held about ways to prevent its coming over; but all was kept very private. -

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

KATHARINE AND PHILIP HENRY AND THEIR CHILDREN: A CASE STUDY IN FAMILY IDEOLOGY. Patricia Crawford, B.A., M.A., Ph.D. Historians are currently debating the nature of English families in the early modern period. In his ambitious study of the family from 1500 1800, Lawrence Stone has argued that there was a transition from families in which there was little love between spouses, little affection between parents and children, to ones in which love was important. 1 His critics have argued that the picuture is not so black as he has painted, and in the most recent study of the English family over a similar period of time, Ralph Houlbrooke has rejected Stone's depiction of change and argued rather for continuity of patterns of affection.2 There is a danger in the geneal discussion at present that by focussing on questions about the degree of happiness within families, to which ultimately there can be no answers, historians will be diverted from the more important questions about the ways in which ideas influ enced the lives of men and women in the past, and how the family transmitted values from one generation to another. In particular, the family taught children their place in the world: their social position and their gender. Yet, what we know of individual families and their dynamics in the early modern period is still fairly limited. Alan Macfarlane's pioneering study of the Essex clergyman, Ralph Josselin, is deservedly widely cited, but we still need further studies to allow us to assess whether Josselin was a typical or unusual individual.3 Miriam Slater has assessed Stone's general conclusions through the records of one upper gentry family, the Verneys, and Vivienne Larminie has concluded, from her study of another gentry family, the Newdigates, that the personalities of individuals influenced the effects of patriarchal ideas in families.' It is only on such detailed studies that the broad generalisations can rest. -

Signed Page 3 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the English parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest (and other legal processes), 1603-1629. Although it is under-represented in the historiography, the early Stuart Commons cherished this particular privilege as much as they valued freedom of speech. Previously one of the privileges requested from the monarch at the start of a parliament, by the seventeenth century freedom from arrest was increasingly claimed as an ‘ancient’, ‘undoubted’ right that secured the attendance of members, and safeguarded their honour, dignity, property, and ‘necessary’ servants. Uncertainty over the status and operation of the privilege was a major contemporary issue, and this prompted key questions for research. First, did ill definition of the constitutional relationship between the crown and its prerogatives, and parliament and its privileges, lead to tensions, increasingly polemical attitudes, and a questioning of the royal prerogative? Where did sovereignty now lie? Second, was it important to maximise the scope of the privilege, if parliament was to carry out its business properly? Did ad hoc management of individual privilege cases nevertheless have the cumulative effect of enhancing the authority and confidence of the Commons? Third, to what extent was the exploitation or abuse of privilege an unintended consequence of the strengthening of the Commons’ authority in matters of privilege? Such matters are not treated discretely, but are embedded within chapters that follow a thematic, broadly chronological approach. -

AVIAN IMAGERY AND DEITY The first metaphor we meet with in the Bible likens the Creator-Spirit to a bird hovering over the deep-and-darkness (Gen 1:2). This same avian image is also a key feature in the Exodus 12 account of the paschal event, but it has remained hidden behind the mistranslation of the crucial verb päsah. Not "pass over" but "hover over" is the meaning of this word, as the present essay hopes to demonstrate. But before investigating päsah, as well as the noun pesah, a bit more background on the use of avian imagery for deity. "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself" (Exod 19:4). So the Lord described his guidance of Israel by the Glory-cloud at the exodus. Moses used this figure of the eagle and its young when reviewing these same historical realities in Deut 32:10-11. Signifi- cantly, in this Song of Moses God's shepherding of Israel through the wil- derness by the theophanic cloud is depicted in the distinctive language of Gen 1:2: as a birdlike hovering (rähap) over the unstructured world (töhu).1 Bird imagery suggested itself naturally for this Glory theophany. First, it was a cloud formation, and clouds and birds belong to the same sphere of the sky, across which they fly. Isaiah parallels the two: "Who are these that fly as a cloud and as doves to their windows?" (Isa 60:8). -

Lessons abound from the life and work of Richard Baxter. Well-known for his pastoral labours in the town of Kidderminster, England, Baxter was also renowned for his Christian learning and advocated unity and comprehension during a turbulent, divisive age. In writing, teaching, pastoring and visiting, he successfully modelled a Puritan’s single-minded zeal to holy living, personal work, evangelism and devotional piety. He was less successful as a theologian, in particular setting forth controversial views of justification. More positively, Baxter as a “mere Christian” persistently advocated for unity and comprehension between ministers during the divisive era of 17th century England. Ultimately, Baxter’s life and work challenges Christian leaders to stay focused on proclaiming repentance and faith in Christ, and to continually realign our heart motives for gospel ministry to be fixed on God’s glory alone. 2 Can any good come from Kidderminster? How does one measure success in Christian ministry? Christian leaders and workers wrestle with this question frequently. Evangelical Christians fawn over examples of large churches such as Hillsong in Sydney, or Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York.
