2 Hello all, If you are an ardent reader of Rural Roundup you will probably hold your hands up in horror when you open this edition. I have had a good shake-up of the pages, primarily to share the colour pages and give each village its fair share. Also to allocate the even pages to the adverts without them being mixed up with the editorial. To help you to easily find what you are looking for I have included an index on page 39. I do hope you approve. I welcome any comments. To add to my problems this month I was a victim of BT’s new re-organisation and my Rural Roundup emails were blocked and I only received them when I called my ‘Computer Expert’ in to sort me out and he spent nearly three hours to get me up and working again!!! So I do hope I eventually have picked up all the copy and have not missed anything out. Apologies if I have. By the tone of Cathy’s letter, you have come up trumps with her request for financial help to maintain the Churches in our villages. As she points out it is not too late to do something about it now, if your envelope is still hanging around do pop something in it (however small) and pass it on to her. I hope those of you who live in Kingsdown or Ringwould are taking advantage of the lovely weather we are having to get out into your gardens and spruce them up ready for the Parish Councillors to choose the most attractive garden or front verge when they tour the area at the end of July. As you are probably aware this issue is a dual one for July and August. I do hope you all have a good summer and I will speak to you again in September. Doreen Clark Ed

I am particularly keen to track down any information, family histories, memories or photographs of the old school If you can help please contact me: Jenny Wall Telephone: 369903 or 62 Balmoral Road or [email protected]

As part of the New National Curriculum, which comes into force from September 2014, there is an expectation that the children learn more about the natural environment. This includes the children growing, preparing and cooking their own food. To facilitate this, part of the school field has been turned into an allotment area, including growing boxes and a shed. All Jo Hygate of these have now been planted up and we look forward to using the fresh produce grown in future cooking sessions. Many thanks to Mrs Rogers who has worked extremely hard on this and other projects linked to our outdoor education. You may be aware that Mr Hewitt will be leaving us at the end of the academic year, to take up a teaching position in London. We will really miss him at Kingsdown but wish him all the best in the future. Jo Hygate

The Warden’s Column I feel a bit like Cassandra of Ancient, bringing doom and gloom. 1. Thefts from cars a. There have been a number of thefts from cars in the area. b. The majority of these thefts have been from unlocked cars and were for items that could be carried away easily; satnavs, mobile phones, cash etc. c. Historically when these thefts have occurred in Walmer they appear to move along the coast to Kingsdown, Ringwould and then St Margaret’s. d. Please, if you ae leaving your car unattended for any length of time, no matter how short, preferably remove any attractive items or failing that don’t leave them on display in the car. 2 Thefts from sheds a. Walmer again has just had a spate of thefts from sheds and it is likely the perpetrators will move along the coast. Ensure that if you have anything of value in your shed, lock it and invest in a shed alarm. b. If you have nothing in your shed worth stealing don’t bother to lock it. That saves damage to the door or lock. 3. Underhand trading a. There are companies who offer free samples for an amount, payable by credit card, to cover postage about £3.95 or the like. Sounds good. b. Be aware very aware that these “free samples” are far from free c. Hidden away in the depths of the small print is a clause saying that unless you cancel within 14 days you be subscribing to their product for a monthly amount. This amount, in one case that I know, of £89.85 d. Perpetrators will move along the coast. .

To all those who have said that they have not seen me quite so often as they used to, I apologise, but because of cutbacks I now cover a larger area (most of Deal), so consequently I only spend between one or two days in Ringwould and Kingsdown per week. However, I hope you will agree better a Warden for only one or two days rather than no days. I will still respond to incidents which are reported to me at any time that I am on duty. Contact Booking Clerk - 01304 363 361 20 Dear Friends, “Thank You” Following my article in last month’s Rural Roundup explaining the financial situation of the parishes, I would like to say a huge “thank you” to all those who have given so generously to help towards the repairs of the churches. Your generosity and help is much appreciated, and if you still have an envelope sitting on your sideboard or table, it isn’t too late to make a donation – so please do so if you can. I would also like to tell you about some changes within the parishes. First of all, after many years, it is with sadness that Kingsdown PCC has decided to stop the 8.00am BCP service on the first and third Sunday of the month from the beginning of July. Unfortunately it was becoming more and more difficult to sustain this service and the small but loyal congregation was getting smaller. In addition, following a survey amongst the congregation, the congregation has also voted to move the main 11.00am service to 9.30am, and that is what we will be doing, again from the beginning of July. This will be for a six month trial which will then be reviewed. In addition, we are considering changing one of the new 9.30am services to a BCP Eucharist. This is still under consideration, but any updates will be posted on the church notice boards and the next edition of Rural Roundup. In addition, the four parishes of Ringwould, Kingsdown, Ripple and Sutton- by- Dover have begun discussions to explore the feasibility and possibility of the parishes joining to become one parish. The discussions are at an early stage and in due course everyone will have the opportunity to voice their opinion. If this change does take place, it will have very little effect on the day to day running of each parish. For example, each church would retain its own name, but it would mean that if someone lived in Kingsdown, they could get married in one of the other parishes if they so wished, without any qualifying connection. In other words, we are simply trying to simplify the administration of the parishes and cut out some of the “red tape” – which can be quite onerous. We have also found it difficult to find volunteers to fill some of the posts on the Parochial Church Council (PCC), so rather than each parish needing a treasurer, we would only need one. As I said, these discussions are at an early stage, and further information will be available to all before a decision is finally taken. So, it only remains for me to wish everyone a glorious summer and once again, to thank all those who have recently given so generously to the church. Yours in Christ Cathy

LEARNING FOR FUN

This is the strong message that comes through the new Programme of Activities for the White Cliffs Country U3A for the period September 2014 - March 2015 which will be available from early July. It has much to offer; there will be 34 structured learning groups led by U3A members, some additional group opportunities to join online courses, which provide for learning at home on your own and coming together as a group to share from the experience and discuss progress; these are high quality, low-cost learning opportunities. Additionally, we have around twenty autonomous special interest groups for which no fee is required in order to participate. And prior to the start of our annual learning programme we have the following events booked to which non-members are welcome; ticket £1.00

Wednesday 30 July: 14.00-16.00 hrs in the Council Chamber, Maison Dieu House, Dover “Murphy’s Law on homicide - “What can go wrong just did” this will be a welcome second talk by ex-DCI Murphy which we know will be hugely popular and entertaining, following the success of his presentation to our U3A last summer.

Wednesday 20 August: 14.00-16.00 hrs at the Astor Community Theatre, Deal “A quarter of a Century of Tracing Change in the Middle East” a talk by Mark Goldfinch who had a career in communications in the Middle East and will give a personal perspective on changes in this important region.

The current membership subscription is £14.00, a modest sum for a wealth of opportunities for learning, with the added value of companionship and friendship. For a copy of the new programme and a membership application, contact 01304 851 744 or email [email protected]. 23

At the recent Ripple Parish Council meeting, the Planning application for the 200+ houses at Station Road was again discussed following the meeting held by Walmer Parish Council. Whilst it is accepted that this development will go ahead, it was felt that any concerns parishes may have should be expressed very strongly with Council. It is likely that due to the amount of traffic caused by the various developments in Deal, the country roads through Ripple, Ring- would, Mongeham, Sutton and Langdon will be used as ‘rat runs’ for people trying to get to and from work and especially if there is a holdup on the A258 for whatever reason. Monies are available from new developments for the infrastructure around the area and it was strongly felt that this money could be used to provide some traffic calming through villages. Ripple Parish Council has expressed it’s concerns to Dover District Council.

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.

 There is a vacancy for a Councillor on the PC and anyone who is interested in becoming a Councillor please would they contact the Parish Clerk with a short CV by email or letter at the address above.  Residents living in East Studdal have complained of speeding traffic in the village especially in Downs Road. It was decided to see if a ‘speed indicator’ could be set up in Downs Rd. The Parish Council are to make enquiries about this.  The Clerk had contacted Highways about the overgrown road verges they said that they are hoping to cut the verges by the middle of June. They had got behind with the cutting as the grass was wet.  Mr Hubbard of Highways said that he was looking into the flooding problems in Homestead Lane, East Studdal and was informed that the bungalows in this road started to flood again in the heavy rain two weeks ago.  Ron Little has had several people come forward to help with the conser- vation work in the Ashley allotments which will help to enhance the wildlife and the bees in the allotment. The water in the allotment has now been turned on for the summer.  The Playing Field is to have some ‘football’ lines painted on it to match the goal posts.  On Sunday 3rd August at 12.30 – 4pm a ‘Picnic in the Playing Field’ in East Studdal will be held. This is an informal get together in the Playing Field. Please bring your own picnic and relax or enjoy a game of ‘Rounder’s’, ‘Tug o War’ or the ‘Bouncy Castle’!! Please contact Veronica for more info at the address above. The Parish Council are to kindly donate the payment for the Bouncy Castle.  The next Parish Council meeting will be on Tuesday 1st July and 2nd September at 7.30pm in Studdal Church Hall. There is no meeting in August. Enjoy the summer Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk

Let’s be Sociable We are a very friendly group that meet from 10.30 ‘til 11.45am on the third Tuesday of every month, usually in the Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal. There is always a Bring and Buy stall, with home-made jams and local grown vegetables etc. and a Raffle. So come for a chat and a hot drink. Everyone is welcome and all the proceeds go to charities.

32 SECRETARY: - Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Email:- [email protected] Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday of each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road At our June meeting we had a very enjoyable afternoon being entertained by Sue Watson, a local folk singer. She sang folk songs connected with Kent, some tradi- tional and others new. We were encouraged to join in with the chorus and, as usual with our members, there was a good response. Since our last meeting about 20 members and guests were given a tour of Dungeness Nature Reserve. We were lucky enough to have a glorious sunny day and learned a lot about the flora, the birds and insects which abound in that area. Our weekly walking, canasta and Rummikub groups are thriving and thor- oughly enjoyed by all who attend. Our next meeting is at 2.00pm Monday 14th July at Ringwould Village Hall when our speaker will be Belinda Knox and the subject is “Walking the North Down Way”. Maybe some new ideas for our walking group! Lisa Souter Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in July & August

Well! I finally had to do it. It was a job I had been putting off for months. A job I hate because it causes a bigger mess initially worse than the one you started out with. Yes, I am talking about the garden shed. It was a disgrace with stuff just pushed in, stuff piled up, in fact so much stuff I couldn't get in the door without nearly break- ing my neck. So everything came out and everything that I had accumulated over many years and never used but I thought would be handy, was thrown out. I found seeds that I had purchased when living in the Midlands and that was twenty two years ago. I found all sorts of useless containers and tools that hadn't seen the light of day since moving here eight years ago. The shed now looks tidy – not perfect but tidy. So I was in the mood to now tackle the back of the shed which wasn't quite so bad but bad enough. Plant pots of every shape and size and colour are all now neatly stacked for future use with a table to work on. There is no guarantee that both areas will stay in this tidy state for long but I will do my best! The Society had a marvellous sunny day out to Borde Hill as a group. We had a private tour of part of the house and a wonderful English cream tea. Thank you to BP for organising the visit. The Annual Show is creeping up on us – Sunday 31st August. It is open to everyone so please get your schedule from the Post Office, look at the classes and come and have a go. As I have said before, so many visitors are amazed that they had something they could have put in but didn't. Happy gardening – try and keep the weeds at bay! Susan Martin – Chairman. 33

36 12th Deal (Kingsdown) Scouts are look- ing for an enthusiastic person or people who could spare some time each week (during term time) to take over the role of Scout Leader. We’re a thriving group that meets once a week in the village, currently on a Thursday evening. The Scouts are all local children aged 10.5 - 14 and a number of parents volunteer to help out each week. HELP We do a wide range of activities and try to get outdoors as much as possible. We play sport, go cycling, work towards badges and try outdoor activities like whittling, outdoor cooking and camping. The ideal person would be imaginative, fun and enthu- siastic to do creative work with young people. If that sounds like you and you’re interested in the goals and aims of Scout- ing and enjoy the outdoors, then we’d love to hear from you. Training will be given and the role requires two hours per week for the meeting and a small amount of additional admin. If interested, please contact Sara Atkinson on 01304 371 138. www.scouts.org.uk/get-involved
