Evensong The Feast of St. Luke 18 October 2020 | 5:00pm

St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Reaching One Another, Tallahassee, and the World with the Transforming Love of EVENSONG Please continue to wear your face covering throughout the service out of love for your neighbor. Please observe silence before the service for prayer and meditation. All mobile telephones, pagers, and electronic devices should be turned off prior to the service. When you enter a St. Peter’s worship service/event, you will be entering an area where photography, video, and audio recording may occur.

“Daily Morning and Evening Prayer are the established rites (offices) by which, both corporately and individually, God’s people annually encounter the whole of Holy Scriptures, daily confess their sins and praise Almighty God, and offer timely thanksgivings, petitions, and intercessions.” (2019 Book of Common Prayer, Page 6). Unlike the Eucharist, these Daily Offices can be said by anyone either publicly or privately. Many churches, like ’s, say or sing the Offices publicly on a daily basis. While on the weekdays our Evening Prayer is said, on Sunday evenings it will be sung. The service of Evensong is Evening Prayer sung by the people, or chorally by a choir on behalf of the people. Musical settings are drawn from many eras, some reflecting modern prayer book language and others from the original 1662 Book of Common Prayer. We invite you to join along, as able, or sit in prayerful contemplation as the voices of the singers and scripture wash over you.

Prelude Please remain seated.

Ringing of the Bell Please Stand.

Psalm 147: 1–11 Chanted by Choir J. Jones 1 Praise the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God; * indeed, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. 2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem, * and gathers together the outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals those who are broken in heart, * and binds up their wounds. 4 He counts the number of the stars, * and calls them all by their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and great is his power; * indeed, his wisdom is infinite. 6 The Lord lifts up the meek, * and brings the ungodly down to the ground. 7 O sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; * sing praises with the harp unto our God, 4 8 Who covers the heavens with clouds, and prepares rain for the earth, * and makes the grass to grow upon the mountains, and plants for the use of men, 9 Who gives food to the cattle * and feeds the young ravens that call upon him. 10 He has no pleasure in the strength of a horse; * neither does he delight in any man’s strength. 11 But the Lord’s delight is in those who fear him * and put their trust in his mercy. All Stand. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

The First Lesson : 1–13 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 9 Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For , in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to , to Dalmatia.11 Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 I have sent to . 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

5 Canticle Magnificat (The Song of Mary) L. True All Stand. Sung by Choir. Luke 1: 46–55 I sing with all my heart, my spirit leaps for joy. Who am I that you should honor me? By your saving grace, all will call me blessed, and proclaim the greatness of your name.

How great your gifts to us, how wonderful your works! With your power you strengthen all the weak. Your mercy will endure, steadfast is your love. All the faithful follow and believe.

You scatter all the proud, the rich you send away. All the mighty vanish in your sight. You fill each hungry heart, raising up the least. You are hope for all who are in need.

You rescue all the poor, your servant Israel, you preserve the promise long foretold. You keep your saving word; faithful is your name. Every generation sings your praise!

The Second Lesson All are Seated. Luke 4: 14–21 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

6 Canticle Nunc Dimittis (The Song of ) K. Getty All Stand. Sung by Choir. Luke 2: 29–32 Lord, let your servant depart in peace according to your faithfulness. Lord, let your servant depart in peace according to the promise of your word. For my eyes have seen the dawn of your salvation to the world. A light released to every race bringing glory to all Israel.

Glory to God the Father, glory to God the Son, glory to God the Holy Spirit now and forevermore Amen.
