Only once were the Stars in danger of losing, scoring three runs in the ninth inning to edge the Colorado Cyclones 3-2 in the first game of pool play. After that, the Stars used big innings in various forms to take control. While the hitting developed slowly, the Stars drew a Modern Wood Era 50 walks that allowed their hits to do damage. The pitching staff allowed just seven earned runs for an ERA of 1.29, striking out 49 batters to eight walks and yielding an opponent batting average of .192. Eight of the 14 pitchers worked three or more innings to share the load. Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS February 26, 2011 Smoak’s days of being a surprise about over Posted on February 25, 2011 by John Hickey SportsPressNW.com PEORIA, AZ – At this time last year, Justin Smoak was working out about 10 miles down the road in the Texas Rangers’ spring training camp in Surprise. And there were not going to be any surprises in his Surprise sojourn. He was coming off his first full year in the Texas organization, he’d only played 54 games at Triple-A and the Rangers’ offense seemed set. So in the first week of March, he was reassigned to the club’s minor league organization and he prepared for a full season at Triple-A. Then the surprises started happening, and they’ve never really stopped. Three weeks into the season, the Rangers found themselves in need of a left-hander with power who could play first base. On April 23, Smoak, a switch-hitter with most of his power from the left side, was called up. He struggled a bit, but he was basically a regular in the lineup of a team in first place in the American League West. He played 70 games for the Rangers, hit .209 and hit eight homers in 235 at-bats. Just when it seemed the April surprise might lead to a date in the postseason, fate jumped up and smacked Smoak again on July 9. The Rangers sent him and three Texas minor leaguers – pitchers Josh Lueke and Blake Beavan and infielder Matt Lawson — to Seattle with the Mariners surrendering pitchers Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe in return.

RAYS CLIPS May 8, 2010 May 7, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays open series in Oakland by improving to 13-1 on road By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer Some lineup tweaks pay off as Tampa Bay keeps up its astonishing start. OAKLAND, Calif. - The decisions are made for various reasons, whether it be recent play, complex data and statistical matrixes, or even an occasional old-fashioned hunch. Friday, manager Joe Maddon said he kept Willy Aybar in the lineup because he looked good the night before and he likes his swings against left-handed pitchers. And he put Sean Rodriguez in the lineup, ahead of Ben Zobrist, based on research of Rodriguez's success against Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez in the minor leagues (4-for-5). And as good as the Rays are going, it only figures both ended up delivering key hits in the 4-1 victory that improved their baseball-best record to 22-7. "Pretty nice,'' Maddon said. David Price had something to do with it, too, sputtering a bit early but going on to pitch into the eighth in dominating style, allowing only three hits, to improve to 4-1. And when he left, after a career-high 119 pitches, with the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Choate took it from there. "David's the story,'' Maddon said. "We get that kind of starting pitching once again.'' Choate did his job twice, actually, as Evan Longoria's throwing error on the first ground ball Choate got from Daric Barton allowed a run to score. But Choate came back and got another, getting Ryan Sweeney to bounce out to shortstop Jason Bartlett.
