  • Rays Clips 5-8-10
RAYS CLIPS May 8, 2010 May 7, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays open series in Oakland by improving to 13-1 on road By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer Some lineup tweaks pay off as Tampa Bay keeps up its astonishing start. OAKLAND, Calif. - The decisions are made for various reasons, whether it be recent play, complex data and statistical matrixes, or even an occasional old-fashioned hunch. Friday, manager Joe Maddon said he kept Willy Aybar in the lineup because he looked good the night before and he likes his swings against left-handed pitchers. And he put Sean Rodriguez in the lineup, ahead of Ben Zobrist, based on research of Rodriguez's success against Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez in the minor leagues (4-for-5). And as good as the Rays are going, it only figures both ended up delivering key hits in the 4-1 victory that improved their baseball-best record to 22-7. "Pretty nice,'' Maddon said. David Price had something to do with it, too, sputtering a bit early but going on to pitch into the eighth in dominating style, allowing only three hits, to improve to 4-1. And when he left, after a career-high 119 pitches, with the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Choate took it from there. "David's the story,'' Maddon said. "We get that kind of starting pitching once again.'' Choate did his job twice, actually, as Evan Longoria's throwing error on the first ground ball Choate got from Daric Barton allowed a run to score. But Choate came back and got another, getting Ryan Sweeney to bounce out to shortstop Jason Bartlett.

  • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. As fate would have it, the Phillies ended up winning the game 15-11, prompting Mr.

By Eduardo A. Encina / The Baltimore Sun December 22, 2016 For all the talk about the Orioles attempting to retain Mark Trumbo, it might be Pedro Alvarez who is the free agent most likely to return to the club. Alvarez’s contributions to last year’s club can easily be overlooked, especially following his late signing in spring training and his struggles at the plate early in the season. But Alvarez hit 22 homers with 49 RBIs and a .249/.322/.504 hitting line in 376 plate appearances while almost exclusively serving as a left-handed hitting designated hitter against right-handed pitching. Take away Alvarez’s first 12 games in April – he appeared to be hindered early after signing late and took some adjustment to a new league and being a DH for the first time in his career – and Alvarez posted a respectable .267/.329/.550 line for the season.
