He then played two seasons in the AW Green Shield team in 1968-69 and 1969-70, scoring a century in the second season. The following season, he played 2nd and 3rd Grades, scoring 572 runs at 30.1 for the season. He played the full 1971-72 season in 2nds, scoring 495 at 29.1 and playing in the losing final team. In 1972-73, he made his 1st Grade debut (player #54) and played the full season, scoring 288 runs at 19.1. In 1973-74, he scored 548 runs at 39.1 as he started to fulfil his promise. In 1974-75, he scored 586 runs at 41.9, including his maiden 1st Grade century, earning selection for NSW Colts. He also captained the Poidevin-Gray Shield team that lost the final. In 1975-76, John scored 454 runs at 37.8, again earning selection for NSW Colts. In the Colts match against Victoria in November 1975, he scored 170 and was subsequently selected to make his first-class debut for NSW in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland at the SCG. Among his teammates were future SDCC players Steve Rixon and Len Pascoe. He played three matches for NSW, scoring 80 runs at 13.3. In 1976-77, he played five first class matches for NSW, scoring 342 runs at 42.8. This included his maiden first class century in a non-Shield match against Tasmania, when he scored 122 and 94 (a match that was Andrew Hilditch’s first-class debut). In a restricted season for SDCC, he scored 230 runs at 28.8. At the end of the season, John was faced with the dilemma of progressing his first-class career while playing on a poor quality pitch at Caringbah Oval. He accepted an offer to move to Randwick to open with current Test opening batsman Alan Turner and play the next two seasons with the SCG No.2 as his home ground as Coogee Oval was out of play. During that time, he made his Test debut for Australia against India in December 1977 and went on to play 30 Tests between 1977-78 & 1984-85. He was the first Sutherland local junior to play for Australia. He scored 1359 runs at 26.6, with two centuries. He returned to Sutherland for the 1988-89 season and captained 1st Grade for the next six seasons. He played 12 matches for NSW in 1988-89 before his first-class career ended. He played 156 first-class matches and scored 9935 runs at 40.2, with 19 centuries. Between 1989-90 & 1992-93, he scored 2332 runs at 55.5 in 1st Grade, along the way leading the team to the semi-finals in 1989-90 & 1990-91. In all grades for the Club, John played 225 matches and scored 6924 runs at an average of 35.0. He also took 92 catches in all grades. In 1st Grade, he played 152 matches and scored 4661 runs at an average of 37.6. He captained the Club in 87 matches, including 80 in 1st Grade – the most for the Club. John served on the management committee for five years, including one year as Deputy President in 1994-95. He also served as Chairman of Selectors for two years between 1992 & 1994. He was Poidevin-Gray Shield manager in 1976-77. He has continued to support the Club and club events since his direct involvement with the Club ended. John’s contribution to Sutherland DCC since 1968 as a player, captain, chairman of selectors and committeeman has been considerable. He is a most worthy candidate for life membership of the Club and I am delighted to nominate him. He deserves your unanimous support. SHANE DUFF NOMINATION OF GLENN McGRATH FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP Glenn McGrath joined Sutherland in 1989-90, when he made his much-publicised trip from Narromine to Sydney. That season, he began in 2nds, taking 13 wickets at 22.3 in seven matches. He made his 1st Grade debut on 16 December 1989 and finished the season with 28 wickets at 13.2 in 8 matches. In 1991-92, he took 29 wickets at 22.1, along the way earning selection in the NSW 2nd XI. At the end of the season, he was selected to attend the Cricket Academy in Adelaide, including a tour of South Africa. In 1992-93, he played Cricket Academy matches against various states and was then selected to make his first-class debut for NSW in January 1993. In that match, he took 5-79 in the first innings in what was to be the start of a decorated first-class career. In 1st Grade that season, he took 14 wickets at 15.4. Glenn’s availability for the Club from that point on decreased significantly due to the increased amount of international and first-class cricket at that time.

Celebrating 50 years of Cricket St. John Vianneys - St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc. 50th Anniversary souvenir booklet 1961/62 to 2010/2011 1 Introduction St. John Vianney’s – St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc. (St. John’s – St. Bede’s C.C.) was established in 1994 after the amalgamation of two clubs (St John Vianney’s Cricket Club and St Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club). These clubs were established in their own right in 1974 and 1961 respectively. Up until 1994 both clubs were affiliated with the F.D.C.A. in the Turf, Matting and Junior competitions. Both clubs were in the first grade turf competition but seeking better future options, voted to move to VTCA in 1994-95. Both clubs considered an amalgamation as a means of forming a strong local club ensuring future existence and growth. Since the amalgamation the Club joined the VTCA in 1994-95 season with the first eleven commencing its involvement in the South B1 division and in the following years progressed to the highest division available within the VTCA (Senior). In 2003 the club was accepted into the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association where it is looking forward to a long association. Kingston Saints (which is the playing name of the St. John Vianney’s – St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc.), play in two different Competitions, our Senior Turf teams play in Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) and our Junior teams play in the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association (C.M.C.A), and both are very well developed competitions and the C.M.C.A.

Amongst the damage suffered, that experienced by the Southern Group is insignificant by comparison with that by the game as a whole, which in turn occupies a very small part in the overall national and international picture. Yet damaging it has most certainly been, as June Hirst’s report on Events makes clear. At this stage there is little to be added except to say that we can only hope to see one another again at cricket grounds in 2021, in the context of a country and world emerging from the crisis. Stop press: as we go to print the news has been made public that there has been a positive covid19 test amongst the Yorkshire squad.

Looking back through it you can see that some things have changed completely. FA Bartlett, writing in the 1911 magazine, describes how when he was at school in the 1860s lessons began at 6.40 am in the Spring and Summer terms. Boys worked until 8 when they all went home for breakfast, returning at 9.45. They went home again for lunch at 12 noon and afternoon lessons resumed at 2.15. Barlett doesn’t say what time lessons finished for the day but one suspects that it wasn’t early. Some things haven’t changed however. Exactly one hundred years ago a writer in the Abingdonian lamented that “the decay of manners does not allow us twentieth century decadents to write a decent letter (like our grandparents) set out with style and circumstance – a scribbled note perhaps, better a wire or ‘phone.” Substitute the words email and text message and it could be a twenty-first century lament. The production of the magazine is now thoroughly twenty-first century, so much so that all last term one of the two sub-editors worked remotely because he had another commitment on Wednesday afternoons and the design consultant, Simon Greenland OA 1996, is working from Australia.
