This chiefly involved a detailed breakdown for Dr Heppell of Anthony Seldon's book: Major: A Political Life (Seldon 1997), specifically targeting sections and paragraphs from Seldon which referenced John Major's speeches at different forums and on different platforms during his premiership. Dr Heppell then utilised this material to produce a series of written up drafts which I was able to comment upon before the John Major chapter was sent to the publishers. Tim and Kevin have been approachable and rigorous as well as generous with their time, which is all I could ever wish for in a supervisory team. 8 Abstract Some twenty years since the dramatic fall from office of his government in May 1997, the premiership of John Major (Conservative, 1990 – 1997) has been overlooked within academic literature, seemingly dwarfed as it has been by the literature on the transformative premierships of Margaret Thatcher (Conservative, 1979 – 1990), and Tony Blair (Labour, 1997 – 2007). The literature that does exist on Major is concomitantly on the whole critical, a by-product of the turbulence of his time in office. This is despite Major’s seeming reputational improvement, and the increasingly revisionist attitudes towards his government, since he left office. Such an improvement has resulted in Major playing an increased role in the national debate in recent years, including in the 2016 referendum on Britain’s future relationship with the European Union. Therefore it is arguably an appropriate moment to re-assess the political leadership of Major. It is the proposition of this thesis that the best mechanism to assess Major’s prime ministerial performance and possibly gain a new insight into his premiership is from Presidential studies and the seminal 2000 work of Fred Greenstein and his six criteria for leadership, thereby building upon the work of other political scientists who have utilised the Greenstein model as a means to assess leadership performance within Prime Ministerial studies. This will be shown with the use of elite interview and questionnaire responses from nineteen participants currently within the House of Commons and House of Lords who were active during the Major era. This thesis will seek to show through the feedback from elite fieldwork that whilst much of the criticism of Major was justified, it equally is possible to argue using Greenstein that the undervaluing and overlooking of Major in the academic literature is unjustified, with much that Major did achieve deserving of further academic research and study. 9 Chapter One: Introduction This chapter is divided into four sections. The first section gives a brief outline of the main proposition for this thesis. The second section provides the rationale for this thesis, which includes an assessment of John Major’s current reputation and a review of the current academic literature. The third section will discuss the methodological approach of this thesis. The final section will give a brief outline of the content of the remaining chapters of this thesis before concluding overall. 1.1 Introduction and Thesis Outline This thesis assesses the political leadership of John Major, Conservative Prime Minister between November 27 1990 and May 2 1997, using the six criteria for political leadership devised by Princeton University Professor Fred Greenstein in his seminal work on Presidential leadership: The Presidential Difference (Greenstein 2000, Greenstein 2004, Greenstein 2009a).

These relationships were crucial to enhancing women’s roles within the party, as it is widely recognised that women would not have been able to attain high positions or affect the issues as they did without help from male colleagues. Finally, the female Labour MPs in the alteration of women’s issues is discussed in Chapter seven. Labour women’s relationships both with their party and with Conservative women are also examined.

Euroscepticism has a long history in the party, but the drift of public, media and Tory sentiment away from European unity crystallised in 1988 under Margaret Thatcher. The Brexit process is now bringing these tensions to the fore, writes Oliver Daddow. We can expect more – and even more damaging – spats like the one after the May-Juncker dinner in April. Playing to domestic galleries has always been the default setting for UK politicians when it comes to European policy. In this process, a largely EU-hostile UK press market has played a significant role in both feeding political negativity about the EU and having it reflected back in political discourse. Mr. Blair, previously an Anglican, was received into full communion with the Catholic Church by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster. Mr. Blair was sponsored at the Mass of reception by his wife, Cherie, a Catholic. The Dec. 21 Mass at Archbishop’s House, the cardinal’s private residence, was attended by Mr. Blair’s family and close friends. Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said in a statement Dec. 22 that he was “very glad” to welcome Mr. Blair into church. “For a long time he has been a regular worshipper at Mass with his family and in recent months he has been following a program of formation to prepare for his reception into full communion,” the cardinal said. “My prayers are with him, his wife and family at this joyful moment in their journey of faith together.” Mr. Blair, 54, served as British prime minister from May 1997 until June 2007. He now serves as envoy to the Middle East for the Quartet, a group comprised of the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia. He was admitted into the church using the liturgical rite of reception of a baptized Christian, which involved him making a profession of faith during the course of the Mass.     Dear Dr Rodgers I’m writing to apply for the post of President of the University of the Bahamas. For the last five years, I have been Vice Chancellor (ie President) of the University of Buckingham, Britain’s leading private university, and medical school, founded by Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s. She became Chancellor in the 1990s after she ceased to be Prime Minister. Large numbers of Bahamians are alumni of Buckingham, close to 1000. I travelled out to the Bahamas every year or so I was Vice Chancellor, last visiting just after Hurricane Dorian, and have made a large number of friends in the Bahamas. I would relish making a significant impact for good on the country. My experience to date has I believe eQuipped me well to achieve your strategic objectives, including enhancing financial controls and increasing revenue diversity, boosting UG and PG numbers and engagement, and elevating research, community engagement and national/international profile. Two of my referees are Bahamians. One, Sarah Farrington, is an alumna of Buckingham. The other, financier Kiril Sokoloff, who can also speak about my work on AI and digitalisation in higher education, is not an alumnus. The Bahamas is a country where I feel very much at home. In 2015, I founded the “Universities G20“ a group for presidents of some of the world’s leading private/liberal arts universities. The G20 has a strong focus on the United States, allowing me to build on my close knowledge of and friendships with US university leaders. One of my referees, Grant Cornwell, is President of Rollins University, which was one of the founding members.
