In addition, this document describes configuring and tuning the SX video subsystem to enhance the performance of the applications using the XGL API. Note – XIL 1.3 in this Solaris release does not provide performance enhancements specifically for the SPARCstation 10SX and SPARCstation 20. The last release to provide XIL acceleration specifically for these systems was the Solaris 2.5.1 release. This document should be used as an addendum to the Solaris 2.x document set and the SPARCstation 10SX Hardware Owner’s Guide or SPARCstation 20 Hardware Owner’s Guide. How This Book Is Organized Chapter 1, “Introduction to Graphics on the SPARCstation 10SX and SPARCstation 20”, gives a brief description of the SPARCstation 10SX and 20SX. Chapter 2, “Reserving DRAM for SX Accelerated Applications”, discusses issues pertinent to configuring the SPARCstation 10SX and SPARCstation 20 to enhance Sun Pixel Arithmetic Memory processor (SX) accelerator performance. Chapter 3, “Running OpenWindows on the SPARCstation 10SX and SPARCstation 20“, discusses the visuals that are present when running OpenWindows on the SPARCstation 10SX and SPARCstation 20. Preface ix Chapter 4, “XIL Acceleration on SX”, explains that no XIL enhancements specifically for the SX are provided in this Solaris release. Chapter 5, “XGL Accelerator Guide for SX”, discusses the operation of XGL 3.0.2 on the SX. Appendix A, “Boot Messages“, shows messages displayed on the SPARCstation 10SX or 20SX during the boot process following SXDRAM configuration. Technology advancements are directly impacting our individual productivity⎯the way we all deal with information and contribute to our environment. Our ability to manage this change and take advantage of its benefits can contribute to our success in business and in our personal life. Section 7.0 (Sizing Fundamentals) provided an overview of the system configuration performance models assuming all hardware platforms were the same. This section will identify how we can use these same models to make proper hardware selections when all hardware platforms are different. The system design process identifies the optimum system configuration strategy, selects the appropriate hardware components, and provides platform specifications that will support user performance requirements. Section 6.0 presented a methodology for identifying an enterprise system configuration strategy that would support specific user requirements. This methodology provides peak user loads for a list of selected platform components required to support the system solution. This section will provide practical tools that can be used to convert peak user platform loads to specific platform specifications. 8.1 Performance Baseline Selection To develop a system design, it is necessary to identify user performance needs. User performance requirements are represented by the workstation platforms selected by users to support computing needs. Application and data servers must be configured to support user desktop performance requirements. User performance expectations have changed significantly over the past several years. This change in performance needs is encouraged primarily by faster platform performance and lower hardware costs.
