Expanding the Power of Csound with Intergrated HTML and JavaScript EXPANDING THE POWER OF CSOUND WITH INTEGRATED HTML AND JAVA SCRIPT Michael Gogins [email protected] https://michaelgogins.tumblr.com http://michaelgogins.tumblr.com/ This paper presents recent developments integrating Csound [1] with HTML [2] and JavaScript [3, 4]. For those new to Csound, it is a “MUSIC N” style, user- programmable software sound synthesizer, one of the first yet still being extended, written mostly in the C language. No synthesizer is more powerful. Csound can now run in an interactive Web page, using all the capabilities of current Web browsers: custom widgets, 2- and 3-dimensional animated and interactive graphics canvases, video, data storage, WebSockets, Web Audio, mathematics typesetting, etc. See the whole list at HTML5 TEST [5]. Above all, the JavaScript programming language can be used to control Csound, extend its capabilities, generate scores, and more. JavaScript is the “glue” that binds together the components and capabilities of HTML5. JavaScript is a full-featured, dynamically typed language that supports functional programming and prototype-based object- oriented programming. In most browsers, the JavaScript virtual machine includes a just- in-time compiler that runs about 4 times slower than compiled C, very fast for a dynamic language. JavaScript has limitations. It is single-threaded, and in standard browsers, is not permitted to access the local file system outside the browser's sandbox. But most musical applications can use an embedded browser, which bypasses the sandbox and accesses the local file system. Abstract: The sharing and growth of open source software packages in the npm JavaScript (JS) ecosystem has been exponential, not only in numbers but also in terms of interconnectivity, to the extend that often the size of de- pendencies has become more than the size of the written code. This reuse-oriented paradigm, often attributed to the lack of a standard library in node and/or in the micropackaging culture of the ecosystem, yields interest- ing insights on the way developers build their packages. In this work we view the dependency network of the npm ecosystem from a “culinary” perspective. We assume that dependencies are the ingredients in a recipe, which corresponds to the produced software package. How to Pick your Build Tool By Nico Bevacqua, author of JavaScript Application Design Committing to a build technology is hard. It's an important choice and you should treat it as such. In this article, based on the Appendix from JavaScript Application Design, you'll learn about three build tools used most often in front-end development workflows. The tools covered are Grunt, the configuration-driven build tool; npm, a package manager that can also double as a build tool; and Gulp, a code-driven build tool that's somewhere in between Grunt and npm. Deciding on a technology is always hard. You don't want to make commitments you won't be able to back out of, but eventually you'll have to make a choice and go for something that does what you need it to do. Committing to a build technology is no different in this regard: it's an important choice and you should treat it as such. There are three build tools I use most often in front-end development workflows. These are: Grunt, the configuration-driven build tool; npm, a package manager that can also double as a build tool; and Gulp, a code-driven build tool that's somewhere in between Grunt and npm. In this article, I'll lay out the situations in which a particular tool might be better than the others. Grunt: The good parts The single best aspect of Grunt is its ease of use. Any device with TCP/IP can interact with the application through HTTP requests. • We can interact with a REST API through a number of mediums: command line, Postman, or a web browser. • These applications create and send http requests to the REST API and receive http responses. • Postman can also be used for mocking APIs and automated testing. Javascript and DOM • As a simple example of consuming a REST API we will look at writing a low level single page application that interacts directly with the API. • It will use AJAX to send and receive requests from the server. • It will use Javascript and DOM to update the web page. • We will (redundantly) include it with an existing server-side rendering app. Single Page Applications • Single Page Applications have the browser/client do the heavy lifting in a web application: The server just provides the data while the client does the logic and rendering AJAX AJAX = Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. • AJAX is not a programming language. • AJAX just uses a combination of: – A browser built-in XMLHttpRequest object (to request data from a web server) – JavaScript and HTML DOM (to display or use the data) • AJAX is a misleading name. AJAX applications might use XML to transport data, but it is equally common to transport data as plain text or JSON text. -

The Jasper Framework: Towards a Platform Independent, Formal Treatment of Web Programming James Smith Imperial College London, United Kingdom [email protected] This paper introduces Jasper, a web programming framework which allows web applications to be developed in an essentially platform indepedent manner and which is also suited to a formal treat- ment. It outlines Jasper conceptually and shows how Jasper is implemented on several commonplace platforms. It also introduces the Jasper Music Store, a web application powered by Jasper and imple- mented on each of these platforms. And it briefly describes a formal treatment and outlines the tools and languages planned that will allow this treatment to be automated. 1 Introduction These days a web application may span both server and client side. Facebook is a good example, with much of the site’s functionality being implemented using JavaScript and executed in the browser. Com- munication between client and server sides is also, typically, not just characterised by requests from the browser, requests are also made by JavaScript in the form of Ajax calls. It is not at all obvious, for example, that Facebook fakes conventional browser requests. Clicking on menu items appears to result in such conventional requests being made, since the whole page seems to change, but in fact these are often Ajax calls and the whole page is changed dynamically, rather than a new page being served. In this way the chat pane can remain “on top”, while the page changes “underneath”. Such techniques used to characterise what were known as rich web applications but they are becoming so commonplace nowadays that a rich web application might be considered the norm.
