His secrets are of the most various kinds: medicines, colours, dyes, varnishes, cosmetics, soaps, perfumes etc., are all described with the minutest detail, and he declares that he had published none but those whose admirable virtues had been repeatedly tested and proved." Second printing of the Dutch translation of the Koran by Jan Hendriksz Glazemaker (1620- 1682), based on the influential French translation by the diplomat-translator André du Ryer (1598-1672). From the seventeenth century on there was interest in the Koran in the Netherlands. Interest in the Koran was dictated by contacts with the Muslim cultures of North Africa, the Middle East and the Far East as a result of trade and diplomatic relations. Islam was also considered as a danger because large parts of the Balkans had become part of the Ottoman Empire, and Vienna was almost enlisted by the Turks in 1629 and again in 1683. 2015/2312

An essay on the theory of painting / by Jonathan Richardson. London : printed by W. Bowyer, for John Churchill, 1715. 240 p. ; 20 cm. Early 19th century engraved book-plate with the motto Sapere Aude. Inscription at the head of the title-page "Stewards Room Beaudesert, Sept 1815". Beaudesert was an estate and stately home of the southern edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. It was one of the family seats of the Paget family, the Marquesses of Anglesey. This copy probably belonged to Arthur Paget (1771-1840) who succeeded Sir William Hamilton as envoy extraordinary at Naples. 2015/4432

Originally published in 1668 as a Latin poem of 549 verses; it was translated in the same year into French prose by Roger de Piles and published in Paris, 1668. In the preface to the present English edition, John Dryden develops the theme of Ut pictura poesis, writing from his own point of view as a poet and playwright on the parallels of painting and poetry. 2015/5778a
A treatise of painting / by Leonardo da Vinci. Translated from the original Italian, and adorn'd with a great number of cuts. To which is prefix'd, the author's life; done from the last edition of the French. London: printed for J. Senex, 1721. 8 preliminary leaves, 189, [16] pages : frontispiece (portrait), plates (some folded), folded diagrams ; 21 cm. First edition in English of Leonardo da Vinci's Trattato della pittura, first published in Italian in 1651 in France. The first edition of Leonardo’s Trattato printed in Italy appeared only in 1733 in Naples. The English translation was the first in a series of publications of scientific or philosophical nature for the benefit of the fine arts in England. The publisher and bookseller John Senex delighted in the promotion of Newtonian culture. Art literature at the time in England of course was almost non-existent. It was based primarily on the (numerous) translation of texts produced in France, related to the world of the Académie. The English translation of Leonardo’s Trattato changed all that; showing Leonardo as an artist, scientist and theoretician. Hogarth’s Analysis was in part indebted to Leonardo’s writings, and Reynolds used him extensively in his lectures. John Senex was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1728. The translation is anonymous. It is likely that the publication was financed by William Taylor, who had achieved economic success, two years before, with the publication of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. 2015/4800

Given a long notice by Rosamond Harley, who states “in regard to the part on oil painting, it should be noted that John Smith was a clock-maker, and, consequently, a large part of his book is concerned with the painting of sun-dials and other outdoor objects. This point has to be kept in mind when considering his discussion of colours, as his procedure is likely to have differed from that of a portrait painter, for example. An interesting feature of the book is that, not only does the author write from his own experience, but in his references to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and Lemery’s System of Chymistry he reflects an awareness of scientific writings of the seventeenth century. Most of the recipes and manufacturing instructions are quoted from such sources, a fact which is acknowledged in the text.” 2015/5797

Like his history of the League of Cambray, it was highly praised by Voltaire. De Piles was an amateur painter and prolific writer on the arts; he wrote both on theory and practice. The present copy is the first English edition. The principles are discussed under the heads of anatomy, attitude, accident, architecture, composition, claro-obscuro, contrast, colouring, design, disposition, draperies, expression, harmony, history, invention, landskip, lights, proportion, passion, portraiture, sculpture, style, truth, unity, etc. This edition is illustrated with 2 engraved plates. Originally published in 1668 as a Latin poem of 549 verses; it was translated in the same year into French prose by Roger de Piles and published in Paris in 1668. It kept appearing with regularity well into the 18th century. The present edition was edited by M.D.Q. (Meusnier de Querlon). 2015/5814
Praktische Anweisung zur Pastellmahlerey / geschrieben von Georg Christoph Günther Nürnberg : in Verlag Christoph Weigels, 1762. [8], 134, [2] p., VI bl. pl. : ill. ; 19 cm. First edition of this artist's manual, trade catalogue, and chemistry text. The first work in German on pastel painting, it covers the preparation of vellum, applying the background, sketching the subject, mixing and handling colors, wash, gold and silver, painting on glass, and lastly, encaustic painting, then quite the rage. The color plates are of paint boxes which Günther sold at his shop in Nürnberg, where he manufactured the colors, assembled the paint boxes (priced here) and retailed painting supplies. The color recipes in the text use alphanumeric codes that designate individual colors in the paint-boxes. 2015/1036

Collection de vases / inventés et dessinés par Mr. de Fontanieu, intendant et contrôleur des meubles de la couronne. Paris, 1770. [2] leaves, [47] leaves of plates : illustrations ; 53 cm. P.E. de Fontanieu (1731-1784) was director of the Garde Meuble de la Couronne, following in his father's footsteps, from 1767 until 1783. While in office he oversaw the transition from the rococo to the emerging neo-classical style, which he implemented for the furnishings throughout the Royal palaces in France. Fontaine dedicated this Collection des vases to King Louis XV. It was designed, as the title makes clear, as a pattern book for artists and those who worked as designers for the Sèvres porcelain factory. The book is unusual, the vase designs are shown in outline shape, followed by another illustration showing the vase with its overlying ornamentation; in all twenty-six separate designs are shown. 2015/5372

Paris : La veuve Duchesne, 1771. XXIV, 430, [2] pages : 17 cm. Originally published Paris, 1768. It is divided into three parts. The first concerns home remedies; the second part is broadly classified as the useful arts. Part III covers the pleasurable arts. Among recipes on how to make wines and liquors, how to grow and conserve flowers, etc. are several secrets concerning the arts of painting, including how to make Naples yellow, how to paint with pastels made with wax or encaustic, several recipes for varnishes, and how to revive old oil paintings. In the preface to L’Albert Moderne, the difference between L’Ancien (Secrets de Albert le Grand) and Le Moderne is stressed; the chief difference being the absence in the latter version of superstitions and enhancements as well as the more bizarre and useless recipes.” 2015/5812

Editio princeps of any portion of this anonymous 12th century text on painting, important in the histories of art and chemistry. All from Book I of this encyclopedia of the arts and crafts, the recipes printed here provide the technical details for mixing oil paints — for wood, illumination, rubrication and canvas — an invention previously attributed to the Van Eyck brothers in the early 15th century. This remains the earliest post-antiquity account of the process. 2015/0298

Rimino : Giacomo Marsoner, 1784. 176 pages, 2 folded leaves of plates : illustrations ; 20 cm. Second edition of a printed volume of recipes for the various varnishes and lacquers invented in the Far East and adopted for European use from the 17th century onwards. Guidotti mines the works of obscure and not so obscure writers, be it Anathasius Kricher or Filippo Buonanni, the letters sent back by travelling Jesuits like Vanhame or Adelberto Tilkousi or Padre Bertocchi, to the more obscure sources such as Daniel Gesser, P. Jamart, Giovanni Zahan, Christopher Love Marley. Towards the end is a more conventional Book of Secrets. The work was originally published in Bologna 1764. 2015/5743
The artist's assistant : in the study and practice of mechanical sciences .... Illustrated with copper-plates. [London] : and sold by G. Robinson London ; and M. Swinney, Birmingham, Printed for the author, [1785?]. 288, IV p., 10 plates : illustrations ; 20 cm. Birmingham was an early center for drawing schools, no doubt fostered and partly funded by the wealth of local industry, however this appears to be the only 18th century treatise for artists that was locally produced. The fact that only one copy survives of the Birmingham printed edition is testimony to its small circulation and poor sales; however it did attract a London publisher. The text is taken from various sources, that on color coming largely from Dossie's Handmaid to the Arts. A number of drawing masters are recorded in Birmingham at this date, and both James Eagle, and John Giles opened drawing schools and may be candidates for editorship of this anonymous work. 2015/4413

Baylis, 1797. 242 p. ; 19 cm. De Massoul describes different popular or famous painting practices and gives details on the composition of colors themselves. The inclusion of a glossary of terms may have given readers who were novice artists the confidence to discuss the aesthetics and expectations of different painting techniques; de Massoul includes clear descriptions of painting in enamel, mosaic, fresco, gouache, miniature, watercolor, pastel, and crayon. Duveen lists the second edition of 1800 and calls it “an interesting work which describes the chlorine bleaching process discovered by Berthollet in 1785”. The plates are chiefly diagrams, numbered 1 to 51. 96 pages, [51] leaves of plates : illustrations (some color) ; 30 cm. Richard Brown (fl. 1804-1845), English architect, designer and drawing master. He appears to have had strong connections during his early life with South Devon: his earliest known design, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1804, was of a Villa with a Distant View of the Catwater, Plymouth, and other designs (1807-12) also relate to this county. However, Brown may have been living in London during this period as he ran an architectural academy at 4 Wells Street. There the importance of perspective drawing was taught, and in 1815 he published the Principles of Practical Perspective. He also became increasingly interested in furniture design, and in the need for designers in this discipline to master the art of perspective. The book is dedicated to John Soane, and Brown was also a friend of his draughtsman, Joseph Gandy, of whose working method some details are provided in Chapters 43 & 44. 2015/4443

[Paris] : Imprimerie de Firmin Didot, [1816]. 25 p. ; 24 cm A rare and important report written by a committee of the Académie des Beaux Arts upon their examination of an album of plates by Engelmann, “Recueil d’essais lithographiques dans differents genres de dessin.” The album served as publicity for Engelmann’s establishment of a lithographic shop at No.18, rue Cassette (Paris), in the early summer of 1816. “The Academy thought fit to examine carefully the prints submitted by Engelmann and undertook to study the origins and progress of the new art. To do this a commission was set up consisting of the architect Heurtier, the engraver Desnoyers, painters Regnault and Guérin, and with Castellan as its secretary. Their report was published in 1816, and since extracts of it appeared in numerous publications it must have played an important part in establishing Engelmann as a lithographic printer, besides making the process as a whole far better known in France.” The report is signed in print by Castellan, ‘rapporteur.’ 2015/3630

London : Printed for Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1818. 2nd ed. xii, 158 pages : illustrations ; 20 cm. “The object of the Author [is] to make the art of cleaning and dying their apparel easy to every person, so that they may make their clothes appear as new... persons of slender income, and others residing at considerable distances from great towns, where proficient dyers are to be found, must inevitably be benefited by this work.” [Preface]. Only the wealthy could afford the specially made dresses shown in the fashion plates featured in Ackermann’s Repository or La Belle Assemblee, but the rising popularity of fashion magazines meant that the details of dress quickly spread through the provinces. Most people remade clothes from an existing wardrobe, adding new linings to cloaks and pelisses, covering existing bonnets with a new piece of crape, and dyeing old dresses. Jane Austen wrote about her mother in 1808: “My Mother is preparing mourning for Mrs E. K. – she has picked her old silk pelisse to pieces, & means to have it dyed black for a gown – a very interesting scheme.” 2015/4434

Much of the second part is devoted to a description of the properties of various colors, and the preparation of various grounds and binders. The author states: “The slight accident of spilling some wax on a crayon drawing, sketched on the back of a book bound in rough calf leather, first led me to engage in a train of experiments, the result of which I now offer to the attention of the public. On attempting to scrape off the wax, a glaze was produced, which exhibited the coloring with that peculiarity of texture and surface which so generally distinguishes works of the old masters. It gave a depth and mellowness of tone rarely to be found in modern paintings, and served at once to show all the brilliant effects that might be obtained, if the art of glazing crayons could be brought to a regular process...” 2015/5900

The geometric beauty of the human figure defined: to which is prefixed a system of aesthetic proportion applicable to architecture and the other formative arts / by David Ramsay Hay, F.R.S.E. First edition and the rarest of Hay’s books. The Scot David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866) is best known through his many books on colour theory. He was a successful house decorator, counting Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria amongst his clients. Here he tackles with much gusto and energy the age old problem of proportion. His system of proportion is based upon the harmonic ratios of the diatonic scale: ‘the eye is influenced, in its estimations of spaces, by a simplicity of proportions similar to that which guides the ear in its appreciation of sounds’ (p. xiii). ‘The basis of the present theory, therefore, simply is, that a figure is pleasing to the eye in the same degree as its fundamental angles bear to each other the same proportions that the vibrations bear to one another in the common chord of music’ (p. xiv). The plates are ‘representing geometric constructions and illustrations of the male and female skeletons, and muscle manikins, with the lines of proportion, after Hay’s system. Originally published about 1880, this is an unchanged reprint of this rare folio-sized work. The authors won prizes for their art at the expositions in London, 1870; Vienna, 1873 and a first prize at Philadelphia, 1876. The large sized plates, handsomely printed in chromolithography, include walnut, St. Remi marble, ash, brescia marble, maple, white marble, mahogany, etc. The quality of the plates is very high; they were printed by Armand Lithography, Amsterdam. As stunning as are the plates, the text is of equal importance and includes a series of 7 black and white illustrations which show paint brushes, graining combs, and other tools and techniques. William Hamilton Gibson (1850-1896) was a figure of high importance in the adaptation of the photograph to book illustration. The most startling halftones are on pages vi-vii where the photographs of eye glasses and a beetle are superimposed directly on the page. This ability to cut text and image in this way was a radical step and was not done to any great extent until the advent of the computer in the 1990s. To do this manually in this way is almost impossible. Unfortunately, Gibson died relatively soon after this publication; who knows what else he may have had in mind. 2015/0238

Facsimile of one of the most important early manuscripts, probably from the monastery of Benedictine in Brevnov, Bohemia. Presented to Vratislav II (1061-1092), king of Poland and what is now called the Czech republic, on the occasion of his coronation in 1085. Kruithof met het jaar van vervaardiging en verantwoording van de gebruikte houtsoorten. Schenking van de editie voor Chinese relaties van Irma Boom Dit is hét icoon van modern Nederlands grafisch design. Vormgeefster Irma Boom en kunsthistoricus Johan Pijnappel kregen van Paul Fentener van Vlissingen (1941-2006) de opdracht om ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig bestaan van de Steenkolen Handels- Vereeniging (SHV) een bedrijfsboek te maken. Toen dit elf centimeter dikke boek, 3,5 kilo zwaar, dat 2.136 ongenummerde pagina’s telt, in 1996 verscheen, veroorzaakte het een sensatie. Dit vanwege de druktechnische hoogstandjes waarmee het is vervaardigd: laserdruk, perforaties, complexe rasters en andere in boeken zelden vertoonde vondsten. Het boek verscheen in twee edities: een Nederlandse in het wit (oplage 4.000) dat in 2011 als geschenk van Thony Ruys is ontvangen, en een Chinese in het zwart (oplage 500). Projecten
Invoering geautomatiseerde uitleen Sinds 2011 is gewerkt aan het opzetten van een systeem van geautomatiseerde uitleen. Dit was een veel omvattend project, waarin veel onderzocht, ontwikkeld, getest en vastgelegd moest worden. Er moest worden vastgesteld wie de gebruikers zijn, hoe hun gegevens worden vastgelegd en wie welke leenprivileges krijgt; hoe de documenten worden uitgeleend en hoe de catalogusrecords moeten worden opgebouwd; voor welke soort barcodes wordt gekozen en hoe deze aan de records worden toegevoegd; en hoe de logistiek en de workflows eruit komen te zien. Koha moest worden aangepast en om de in- en externe gebruikers op de hoogte te stellen van alle veranderingen zijn nieuwe gebruikershandleidingen opgesteld (in het Nederlands en Engels). Het project heeft tweemaal enige tijd stil gelegen: de eerste keer wegens de verhuizing en een tweede keer door problemen rondom de ontwikkeling van de bibliotheekpas.
In 2015 kon met de lancering worden gestart. Alle medewerkers van de bibliotheek hebben instructies gekregen over de uitleenprocedures, het labelen van de bibliotheekmaterialen en de workflows. Volgens zijn de in- en externe gebruikers voorgelicht over de nieuwe manier van aanvragen en uitlenen. Op 6 juli 2015 is het systeem in gebruik genomen en het functioneert sindsdien naar behoren. De tweede helft van het jaar is gewerkt aan de registratie van de al eerder geleende boeken in het geautomatiseerde systeem. Dit werk is vrijwel afgerond.
In 2016 zal nog worden gewerkt aan het attenderen van externe gebruikers op het verlopen van de bibliotheekpas en de procedure voor het verwijderen van de gebruikers die niet hebben gereageerd op deze attendering. Verder moeten in de depots de restanten van de oude uitleenadministratie worden opgeruimd en verwerkt.

Bibliotheek Aziatische Kunst en Archeologie (BAKA) Uitgaande van de 11.086 geconverteerde records is vanaf 10 februari gewerkt aan het ontdubbelen, herplaatsen, en labellen van de boeken, tijdschriften en brochures. Het project zal begin 2016 worden afgerond.
Veilingcatalogi In de laatste 3 maanden is via Bureau Ingressus door Eelko van Schie gewerkt aan de achterstallige ontsluiting van oudere veilingcatalogi. In totaal werden ruim 750 veilingcatalogi verwerkt, waaronder 55 uit de nalatenschap van M.D. Haga, 639 catalogi uit de nalatenschap Mr C.P. van Eeghen (1921-2014), tevens enkele veilingen uit de BAKA collectie en diverse aankopen. De 101 veelal geannoteerde en doorschoten veilingcatalogi uit de periode 1748- 1830 uit de nalatenschap van Mr C.P. van Eeghen zijn opgenomen in de collectie van het KOG.
Labellen In 2016 zijn 68.042 RFID stickers met barcodes geplakt en de barcodes gekoppeld aan de records. Sedert aanvang zijn 131.373 stickers geplakt, hetgeen 48,3% is van het nu bekende aantal items.
Automatisering Het bibliotheeksysteem Koha werd overgezet op een nieuw besturingssysteem Debian. Tevens werd de serverconfiguratie vernieuwd en uitgebreid met onder meer een file server. Op deze file server zijn digitale documenten opgeslagen, waaronder gedigitaliseerde boeken, e- publicaties, en plaatsing- en inventarislijsten van archieven.
STCN Op 1 april is Daphne Wouts gestart met de inventarisatie en het toevoegen van de itemgegevens van de in het Rijksmuseum aanwezige Nederlandse drukken en Nederlandstalige uitgaven van voor 1801 aan de Short Title Catalogue Netherlands. In totaal zijn 4314 items toegevoegd aan het STCN-bestand (271 uit depot veilingen; 2463 uit depot KOG; 1579 uit depot 300). Daarnaast is geconstateerd dat er 636 unica zijn, d.w.z. dat ruim 14,5 % van de titels uit de collecties van het Rijksmuseum en het KOG nog niet eerder werd aangetroffen in een deelnemende instelling (doorgaans is dit ongeveer 5%). Bijzonder dus! Beschrijvingen van deze titels en de itemgegevens zijn opgenomen in de STCN. In 2016 wordt onder meer gewerkt aan de boeken en pamfletten in het depot prenten. Op 1 april is het project afgerond.
Archieven Op 1 april is Elske Dorgelo gestart met het inventariseren van niet-institutionele archieven. Het beschrijven van de in totaal ca. 25 archieven is in 2015 op 13 records uitgekomen, voorzien van uitgebreide annotaties en plaatsingslijsten. De archivalia werden opnieuw verpakt en op twee plaatsen bijeen gebracht: het documentatie depot en het depot prenten. Op 1 april is het project afgerond.
Studiezaal en webcatalogus
Het aantal externe bezoeken aan de leeszaal bedraagt 6.025. Bezoek aan de catalogus van de bibliotheek: 402.535 visits (11.116.616 hits). Een visit omvat meerdere hits vanaf hetzelfde internetadres binnen een beperkte tijdsperiode. Visits hebben betrekking op het opvragen van webpagina's; hits zijn algemener. In de genoemde getallen zijn overigens het aantal zoekopdrachten in de catalogus via onze SRU server niet opgenomen.
