Read this important legal guide BEFORE you are involved in an accident! www.NAMIL-LAW.org/Sawaya REVIEW: Hi-Tech Headset For Group Rides If you want to communicate easily with everyone on your next group ride, look no further than the PackTalk Bold from Cardo Systems. This state-of-the-art device is much more than a wireless intercom. It lets you stay connected with a small group, a pack of up to fifteen people, or simply another rider. High quality, long distance communication is made possible with advanced DMC mesh technology. DMC connects a group in a web, so riders can come and go, disconnecting and reconnecting at any time, without affecting the rest of the group. This is far superior to a Bluetooth “daisy chain” that breaks apart the whole group with one lost connection. Other features include voice-activation for hands-free operation, full GPS and phone connectivity, a killer app, smart radio, JBL audio system, and Bluetooth to pair with older helmet communicators. The device is waterproof and can be charged while you ride. Two thumbs up for a highly functional headset that really steps up the game. Learn more at: www.CardoSystems.com/shop/packtalk-bold. It was a thrill to see the Globe of Death (a steel ball cage for motorcycle stunt riders) and Evel Knievel’s infamous ramp-to-ramp Snake River Canyon jump. Thursday is Bike Night at the Iron Horse Hotel, with hundreds of custom rides, and a huge crowd watching bikers doing burnouts and flying through flaming ramps. .

Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. All Rights Reserved. A South Dakota Rendezvous: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races Carlton L. Bonilla The fur trappers of the early nineteenth century were hardy men, spending months isolated from the civilized world. Each summer, however, these aigged individuals gathered at a designated location to trade pelts, garner sup- plies, and celebrate. Their unique gatherings, known as ren- dezvous, were spectacular events, bringing together trap- pers from throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Today, a new breed of frontiersman has appeared, a modern-day "mountain man" who has replaced tlie pinto of the trapper with die "iron horse of Milwaukee"—the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Their gathering takes place each year in Sturgis, South Dakota, with all the grandeur and excitement of the original assemblies. Known variously as the Black Hills Motor Classic, Sturgis Rally and Races, or simply, "Sturgis," the event is the rendezvous of the twentieth century, bring- ing together people from all over the world for cama- raderie, commerce, and entertainment. The traditional rendezvous began in .1825, when William H. Ashley, a fitr-trade entrepreneur from Saint Louis, took a supply train to the central Rockies after broadcasting the time and place of arrival to trappers in the mountains for months beforehand. Upon reaching his destination, Ash- ley provided the trappers with a year's worth of supplies Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.

  • Make Way for the Biker: Media and Swedish Motorcycle Culture
Make Way for the Biker: Media and Swedish Motorcycle Culture Lars Lagergren Prelude Since the late 1960s, researchers at the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) at Birmingham University, England, have studied youth cultures, trying to find a pure subculture which had not yet been corrupted and commercialised by the agents of the hegemonic culture. Since then there has been an unspoken truth that such subcultures, at least for a short period of time, really do exist. In the CCCS case, it was youth cultures such as Rockers, Mods, Skinheads and Punk. These subcultures, which were closely connected with class at one point, started out fresh and unspoiled in a local context, yet later became almost public property. One of the most important agents in this transformation, from local and pure to international and commercial, was—and to an even greater extent is—the media. This essay will explore the interaction between specific subcultures and the media in Sweden from 1945 to 2000. My aim is to show the effect the sometimes close interaction between a subculture and the media has had on the particular subculture. The Swedish motorcycle culture contains a number of subcultures that all have the motorcycle as the central symbolic object. What generally differs between these subcultures, from an insider’s perspective, is how the motorcycle functions as a cultural object which has the power to influence the behavior, style and rituals of the member of the particular subculture. For instance, owners of a Harley-Davidson chopper dress, behave and drive differently from the owner of a Japanese race machine or a German touring cycle.
