Cuticular Structure and Affinities of Cheirophyllum Lacerata (Feistmantel) N. Comb CUTICULAR STRUCTURE AND AFFINITIES OF CHEIROPHYLLUM LACERATA (FEISTMANTEL) N. COMB. D. D. PANT & SUDHA SINGH Department of Botany, University of Allahabad, India ABSTRACT A new genus Cheirophyllum is made for some lobed leaves which were described earlier by Feistmantel (1886) under the name Noeggerathiopsis laeerata. and by Maithy (1965) as Palmatophyllites laeerata (Feistmantel) comb. novo as well as some newly collected identical duplicates from the Karharbari Stage of the Giridih Coalfield. The cuticles of C. laeemta (Feistmantel) comb. novo are also described. It is pointei out that the name Palmatophyllites laeerata is illegitimate. [email protected], [email protected] RESUMO – O afloramento Morro do Papaléo, localizado no município de Mariana Pimentel, Rio Grande do Sul, tem se mostrado uma importante fonte de sementes fósseis preservadas na forma de impressões, as quais são provenientes do Grupo Itararé e da Formação Rio Bonito, Permiano Inferior da bacia do Paraná. Neste estudo são descritos seis diferentes morfotipos para o gênero Samaropsis Goeppert que, possivelmente, correspondem a seis diferentes morfoespécies. Características como a largura da sarcotesta, a forma geral da semente e do nucelo e a textura de sua superfície permitiram a proposição de uma nova espécie, Samaropsis gigas nov. sp., e identificar a presença de Samaropsis kurtzii Leguizamón, S. aff. S. millaniana Oliveira & Pontes e S. aff. S. rigbyi Millan. Além disso, uns poucos espécimes foram classificados apenas a nível genérico, tendo sido designados como Samaropsis sp. 1 e Samaropsis sp. 2.     Revista Brasileira de Geociências 30(3):486-490, setembro de 2000 EARLY PERMIAN PALAEOFLORAS FROM SOUTHERN BRAZILIAN GONDWANA: A PALAEOCLIMATIC APPROACH MARGOT GUERRA-SOMMER AND MIRIAM CAZZULO-KLEPZIG ABSTRACT In evaluating the parameters supplied by the taphofloras from different sedimentary facies in the Early Permian sedimentary sequences of the southern part of the Paraná basin, Brazil, it has become evident that the palaeofloristic evolution was related to palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic evolution. The homogeneous composition of Early Permian floral assemblages, which are characterized mainly by herbaceous to shrub-like plants considered to be relicts from the rigorous climate of an ice age (e.g. Botrychiopsis plantiana) suggest the persistence of the cold climate. The dominance of Rubidgea and Gangamopteris leaves with palmate venation associated with glossopterids with penate venation seems to indicate a gradual warming of climate. In roof-shales of coalbearing strata pinnate glossopterids related to Glossopteris are common, while Gangamopteris and Rubidgea (palmate forms) are poorly represented. The sudden enrichment of herbaceous articulates and filicoids fronds is characteristic of this stage and trunks of arborescents lycophytes become important elements. These antrocophilic paleofloras are characterized by typical elements of the "Glossopteris flora" associated to tree lycophytes and ferns communities. Therefore, the cool seasonal climate of Early Permian changed into the moist seasonal interval during the Artinskian-Kungurian. This climatic change was significant to the meso-hygrophitic to hygrophitic vegetation registered in roof-shale ferns of the Gondwana Southern Brazilian coalbearing strata. Developed a software on information system IGMIS for storage and retrieval of Indian Gondwana Palynological studies: Palynostratigraphical studies were carried out for spores/pollen grains from South Rewa Gondwana Basin, Guryul Ravine of Permo – Triassic boundary section, Kashmir and Ib–river sediments, Rajmahal and Damodar basins. Present Research: Presently, I am working on Palaeofloral and biomarker analyses to reconstruct the Lower Gondwana palaeoenviroment and palaeoclimate of Rajmahal and Damodar basins. The new nameNoeggerathiopsis brasiliensis is erected as a replacement for Rufloria gondwanensis Guerra-Sommer. The leaf adpressions come from a tonstein layer within a Sakmarian coal seam of the Faxinal Coalfield, southern Paraná Basin, Brazil (U–Pb SHRIMP mean age 291 ± 1.3 Ma, Rio Bonito Formation). The leaf micromor- phological pattern, observed under optical transmitted light and field emission gun — scanning electron microscopy, is distinct from the Euramerian Cordaites Unger and very similar to the Angaran Rufloria Meyen. The lower epidermis has conspicuous longitudinal stomatiferous furrows typical of Noeggerathiopsis (Feistmantel) McLoughlin & Drinnan covered by tightly interwoven trichomes, epidermal and probably also hypodermal highly cutinized sheaths at the borders of furrows, and haplocheilic stomatal apparati surrounded by long conical trichomes. The xeromorphic cuticle structures are similar to those ofGlossopteris pubescens (Guerra-Sommer) Degani-Schmidt & Guerra-Sommer, the dominant leaf species preserved in the tonstein layer, indicating convergent ecological adaptations to abiotic stress factors in distinct plant groups in the peat-forming paleoenvironment. Fossil seeds have an important role in these studies because of their abundance and morphological diversity. In the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, many seed-containing fossil have been recovered from Morro do Papaléo, Faxinal Section and Cerro Negro outcrops. However, few studies on them have been published. This study focuses on seed specimens of the morphogenus Cordaicarpus, recovered from Lower Permian strata of the Paraná Basin in Rio Grande do Sul. The material studied is preserved as impressions/compressions mainly from the uppermost Itararé Group, but also the Rio Bonito Formation. As results, two species have been identified, Cordaicarpus aff. C. brasilianus Bernardes-de-Oliveira et al., Cordaicarpus aff. C. famatinensis Gutierrez et al., and species are described as new: Cordaiparpus cerronegrensis sp. nov. and C. truncata sp. nov.
