CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY November 22, 2015

Pastor Cindy Beck officially begins her ministry at Advent as we prepare to enter the first Sunday of Advent.

We end one church year and begin a new one at Advent. Welcome! GREETINGS TO ALL OF OUR ADVENT FAMILY:

WOW! WHAT AN AMAZING MONTH THIS HAS BEEN HERE AT ADVENT. WITH THE WELCOMING OF OUR NEW INTERMIN PASTOR Bob Mathews, TO THE KICKOFF OF OUR NEW STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN AND Church Council President YOUR FAITHFUL RESPONSE TO THIS EFFORT.

LAST MONTH’S PRESIDENT’S LETTER THEME, “GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS.” WAS TRULY FELT WITHIN OUR CONGREGATION DURING THIS PAST MONTH.

THAT ALL LEADS US TO THIS ADVENT SEASON, AS WE AWAIT WITH JOY AND ANTICIPATION THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOR CHRIST.

LAST MONTH’S PRESIDENT’S LETTER THEME, “GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS” IS TRULY NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER.

OUR YOUTH LEADERSHIP ROLE NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO EVEN GET ONE RESPONSE FOR A CANDIDATE FOR THE YOUTH DIRECTOR POSITION AND WITH THE FINANCIAL STRAIN ON OUR BUDGET, IT SEEMED PRUDENT THAT WE ABANDON THIS EFFORT. I HAVE CONTACTED EVERY YOUTH PARENT AND SPONSOR TO PARTICIPATE IN A SMALL COMMITTEE FORMAT TO PLAN/ORGANIZE/AND PARTICIPATE IN OUR YOUTH PROGRAMMING.

WE WILL MEET EARLY IN JANUARY WITH EVERYONE, TO GUIDE THIS PROCESS IN ACTIVITIES TO BUILD, ENCOURAGE AND SUSTAIN A VIABLE YOUTH MINISTRY. IF ANY OF YOU FEEL THAT CALLING, WE WOULD WECOME YOU, WITH OPEN ARMS, TO JOIN US. PLEASE CONTACT ME.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY “MERRY CHRISTMAS”.

IN GOD’S SERVICE BOB MATHEWS PRESIDENT ADVENT LUTHERAN

3 Here am I, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. by Daniel O’Donnell This has always been one of my favorite hymns. It almost always makes me cry because of the simple, yet powerful call to action. I have been a member of Advent for nearly 30 years. I attended with my mother, Val Rathbun. It was our special time together every week. In those early days, I had a busy career, two young sons and I volunteered with several local charities. I’ll admit I had not been very active at my church. I just assumed the “regulars” would always be there to keep things running. That all changed the day Ina McCoy asked me if I’d be interested in serving on the church council. Me? No way. I wasn’t qualified like those “regulars”. But after praying about it, that hymn came to mind and I said yes. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made. To be a part of this wonderful group, especially during this time of transition, is indeed a blessing. I’ve learned so much about our congregation, the past, the present and most importantly, the steps needed to move into the future.

Now I’d like to ask you, my church family, to take a close look at the words to that hymn and ask what you can do to help us meet the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. As you know, our finances are of utmost importance. This is always a difficult issue. It makes us uncomfortable, sometimes even angry to be asked for more money, especially following the amazing generosity put forth for Pastor Olsen’s retirement. However, with a new interim pastor arriving and regular monthly expenses, we must ask once again to help us by making a pledge, no matter the amount. Consider it a in appreciation of what we receive from this special church and that wonderful family feeling when sharing the peace during the service. All those hugs, handshakes and greetings – that’s what Advent is all about.

Wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas.

4 The View From The Pew Keith and I joined Advent 25 years ago. We came from a little mission church, Shepherd of the Hills in Vacaville, CA where Harold and Vera Johnson (no relation) were members. The Johnsons many of you may recall were members of Advent years ago. Harold was choir director and Vera was organist. When they learned we were moving to the Sacramento area and we had no idea of which church with so many to choose from, they mentioned the most welcoming and ONLY place for us to go was Advent. They were right!

Keith was still working flying airplanes and out of town most of the time, so I had to go on my own that first Sunday. Everyone I met that first day extended a hand in welcome and friendship. I was overwhelmed and told Keith how comfortable I felt and that God had led us to Advent with a little push from Harold and Vera.

Advent lives up to its mission statement that:

“With Joy and Thanksgiving we commit Advent Lutheran Church to be the Welcome Place, where through God’s grace, we gather, forgive, grow and care.”

As we look around from the back row at how our congregation is changing, we need to recommit ourselves to work together as a congregation to make these changes work for us. We are still that place and as we move forward in a new chapter of our church life, we welcome Pastor Cindy Beck, with God’s grace, we will continue to be that Welcome Place.

We are wishing all of you God’s blessings during this Advent season.

Thank you, Keith and Pat Johnson

10 WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT CLASS WITH NANCY KING

Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life: You and Your Spiritual Gifts

During our Wednesday classes we have been discussing who we are as a congregation. One conclusion we've reached: God's work in this setting takes all of us! Please join us Wednesday evenings as we discover and explore our spiritual gifts and the ministries that utilize these gifts.

All participants will have the opportunity to answer a set of questions to identify their spiritual gifts. We will spend the following weeks together interpreting the inventory, presenting the scriptural foundation for each gift and exploring the ways these gifts can work together in ministry.

This is the perfect opportunity to explore the ways you can be a part of this exciting time of transition at Advent!

13 In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” “Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.” The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impos- sible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The

umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we DINNERS IN DECEMBER need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after Wednesdays at 5:30 pm delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well I think there is some- December 2 thing and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe Breakfast for Dinner we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there December 9 is life, then why has no one ever come back from SCANDINAVIAN DINNER & there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after- St. LUCIA FESTIVAL delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.” December 16 “Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly Baked Ham Holiday Dinner we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.” CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PLAY The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then December 23 where is She now?” NO S.T.E.P.S The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that December 30 we live. Without Her this world would not and NO S.T.E.P.S could not exist.” Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only Come join the fellowship logical that She doesn’t exist.” and good food! To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.” Mary and Elizabeth STERN-JOHNSON BIKE CLUB MEXICAN TRAIN DOMINOES Bike Ride December 12 & 26 No Dominoes in December 9:00 am Join the group at the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot on the corner of Sunrise and Gold Country Blvd.

My name is Becky Reed and under the direction of Sister Libby, Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes, and LeRoy Chatfield, Retired Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes, I am tasked to help launch a community driven healthy breakfast program in Friendship Park.

As most of you already know and are currently instrumental in this service, Loaves & Fishes dishes up one noontime hot meal in the dining room for those in need and for many, this is the only meal of substance for the day. Sister Libby asked LeRoy Chatfield and I to develop a breakfast program for the guests at Friendship Park who up to now, have only a "coffee breakfast" (coffee/tea and day old pastries) to sustain them in the early morn- ing. She feels these homeless and hungry guests need a breakfast that is more nutritious, more substantial and more satisfying than what is currently given. In short, we can do better as a community.

Our first step in developing this new program was to reach out to a group of 20 friends, neighbors, and anyone else we could think of to provide a breakfast for 300 homeless in Friendship Park. Our menu consisted of: bananas, hard boiled eggs, bologna/cheese sand- wiches, ham/cheese sandwiches, cheese sticks, granola bars, cups of applesauce, cheese cracker snacks, and condiments along with a plastic bag with handles to carry the food away.

The breakfast was well received by the homeless guests and we found that many were sav- ing a banana, a sandwich, and a cheese stick an evening snack or meal. So in effect, along with the full course noon meal served in the Loaves & Fishes Dining Room, our volunteer group was providing them with food for breakfast and possibly dinner . . . so for at least that day, they had access to 3 meals.

Our ultimate goal is to serve a similar type menu five days a week. In order to meet this tall and important order, we are looking for Breakfast Group Coordinators to reach out and recruit a group of at least 10 volunteers willing to donate, prepare and serve breakfast on a regular basis (e.g., monthly, every other month, or even every four months, etc.) at Friend- ship Park from 8 to 9 a.m. As of now, we have three passionate and motivated Breakfast Groups and are looking for more.

If feeding the hungry is a project that appeals to you and you know of a group of friends, neighbors, colleagues, companies, churches, schools, associations, etc., feeling the same way, we would very much like to hear from you or anyone you know that wants to get in- volved either as a Breakfast Group Coordinator or donator.

To witness firsthand the impact of this program, the next Breakfast Group will be serving on Wednesday, December 9 at 8:00 a.m. It is powerful to see that everything close-up looks different than from far away. Volunteers see up close and personal how their efforts effect the lives of more than 300 people.

Again, if you would like to get involved in providing a core basic human need, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Contact me at:
