  • Breaking the Wheel of Finance, Gendered Narratives by Media Outlets in the Aftermath of the Financial Crisis
Breaking the Wheel of Finance, Gendered Narratives by Media Outlets in the Aftermath of the Financial Crisis A thesis completed under the supervision of Dr. Lindsay. O. Black, submitted to the Faculty of Humanities in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of International Relations at the University of Leiden © Isa Davids, Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2020 Abstract In response to the financial crisis on Wall Street in 2008, the financial world in which the patriarchy still ruled was held accountable by the media. As a result, new outlets such as Time Magazine and The New York Times began portraying women as the perfect fit for the role of regulator. This paper analyzes to what extent the gendered narrative has been constructed by the media and how. Based on critical discourse analysis theory, this research proves that through the use of metaphors, the media actively helps to shape a dichotomized climate in which women are always depicted as ‘the other’. Analyzing the narrative describing two women (Sheila Bair and Elizabeth Warren), this study reveals that they were projected to gender rhetoric, hereby focussing on four metaphorical themes. This study has implications for the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis and studies on gender framing. Key words: gender framing, media discourse, global financial crisis Acknowledgements I am indebted to my supervisor, Dr. Lindsay O. Black, for his continued guidance and a generous supply of ideas, together with an unwavering amount of patience. To my parents, who have facilitated my dream to live and work in New York City, which has been the inspirational birthplace of this research.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “This city, this whole country, is a strip club. You’ve got people tossing the money, and people doing the dance.” – Ramona Inspired by true events, HUSTLERS is a comedy-drama that follows a crew of savvy strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. At the start of 2007, Destiny (Constance Wu) is a young woman struggling to make ends meet, to provide for herself and her grandma. But it’s not easy: the managers, DJs, and bartenders expect a cut– one way or another – leaving Destiny with a meager payday after a long night of stripping. Her life is forever changed when she meets Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), the club’s top money earner, who’s always in control, has the clientele figured out, and really knows her way around a pole. The two women bond immediately, and Ramona gives Destiny a crash course in the various poses and pole moves like the carousel, fireman, front hook, ankle-hook, and stag. Another dancer, the irrepressible Diamond (Cardi B) provides a bawdy and revelatory class in the art of the lap dance. But Destiny’s most important lesson is that when you’re part of a broken system, you must hustle or be hustled. To that end, Ramona outlines for her the different tiers of the Wall Street clientele who freQuent the club. The two women find themselves succeeding beyond their wildest dreams, making more money than they can spend – until the September 2008 economic collapse. Wall Street stole from everyone and never suffered any consequences.

  • Introduction
IN FOCUS: Moving Between Platforms Film, Television, Gaming, and Convergence Introduction edited by JONATHAN GRAY ame studies has long been historically marginalized within me- dia studies. Yet in light of the gaming industry’s huge leaps for- ward in design quality, and, more importantly, the economic and G textual convergences of fi lm and television with gaming, it is in- creasingly imperative that media scholars pay close attention to games. Many fi lms and television programs include a game as part of their text, a growing number of storytellers are thinking and creating across media, and many media corporations are trying their best to expand revenues by wedding gaming with fi lm and television. This In Focus is about this process of convergence. Convergence has inspired considerable excitement both from pro- ducers who see the potential for a revolution in storytelling methods and scope and from audiences seeking to renegotiate their relationship with the media industries. Convergence has also been cause for con- siderable concern for those who see the potential for the media indus- tries to capitalize on it, thwarting competition and rewriting laws and business models to gain yet more control over the audience-consumer. These combined hopes and worries for convergence illustrate one of its key qualities: convergence produces more than just the sum of its parts. Convergence is, to use a gaming metaphor, like that most clichéd move of videogames, the “double jump.” This action often comes when one’s avatar must leap from one moving platform to another. The player must wait until the perfect moment to perform not just a jump, but a “double jump,” wherein the avatar begins a new jump while at the peak of its fi rst jump.

  • So, Why Hasn't J-Lo Been Nominated for Any of the BIG Film Industry
So, why hasn’t J-Lo been nominated for any of the BIG film industry awards? Today at Mediático, the morning after both her and Shakira’s amazing Super Bowl half-time show that also featured reggaeton artists Bad Bunny and J Balvin and a BAFTAS ceremony where the lack of diversity in award nominations was commented on by the Duke of Cambridge, we are super excited to present this very timely post. Regular contributor Niamh Thornton, Reader in Latin American Studies at the University of Liverpool, explores why J-Lo hasn’t been nominated for any awards this year despite her critically lauded supporting performance in Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria 2019). You can read one of Dr Thornton’s Mediático posts here and a talk on González Iñárritu’s Mexican Masculinities here, and access her blog on Mexican culture and cinema here. Why hasn’t J-Lo been nominated for any of the BIG film industry awards? The quick answer: she has a body. Jennifer Lopez is in the news thanks to her (and Shakira’s) “kinetic and sometimes dizzying” half-time performance at the Super Bowl. Whilst there is no doubt about Lopez’s renown, the Super Bowl half-time performance is a marker of superstardom and name recognition across a swathe of the US public. In a post on my own blog I reflected on Jennifer Lopez as a star and celebrity. As I researched her persona in order to gauge press attention -a key to her celebrity status- I signed up to Google alerts to get daily emails on press coverage.

Like Uber, but for Local Government Law: The Future of Local Regulation of the Sharing Economy DANIEL E. RAUCH DAVID SCHLEICHER† In the past five years, sharing economy firms like Uber, Zipcar, Airbnb and TaskRabbit have generated both huge market valuations and fierce regulatory contests in America’s cities. Incumbent firms in the taxi, hotel, and other industries, as well as consumer protection, labor, and neighborhood activists, have pushed for regulations stifling or banning new sharing economy entrants. Sharing firms have fought back, using their popularity with consumers and novel political strategies, lobbying for freedom to operate as broadly as possible without government interference. But to date, both participants and observers of these “sharing wars” have relied on an unstated assumption: if the sharing firms win these fights, their future will be largely free from government regulation. Local governments will either shut sharing down, or they will leave it alone. But this assumption is almost surely wrong. If sharing firms prevail in the current fights over the right to operate (and indications suggest they will), it is unlikely that cities and states will ignore them. Instead, as sharing economy firms move from being upstarts to important and permanent players in key urban industries like transportation, hospitality, and dining, local and state governments are likely to adopt the type of mixed regulatory strategies they apply to types of firms with whom sharing firms share important traits, from property developers to incumbent
