Cats Dig the Longball: Last season, Arizona hit eight (8) home runs over the course of a 55-game season. 2015 Pac-12 Standings Through only eight games this season, the Wildcats have totaled five round-trippers. Riley Moore and Bobby (as of Feb. 23) Dalbec each have a pair of dingers, while Scott Kingery as added one homer of his own. Arizona has already produced two multi-homer games this season, including on Feb. 15 against Eastern Michigan and Feb. 21 School Overall Pac-12 GB against Rice. Prior to the two-homer game against the Eagles, the last time the Wildcats hit two or more USC 8-0 0-0 - in the same game was March 13, 2013. That’s right, it had been a 91 games since the Cats hit two home Oregon 7-1 0-0 - UCLA 6-1 0-0 - runs in a single game. It was last achieved against Butler when former Pac-12 batting champs Johnny Field Arizona 6-2 0-0 - and Brandon Dixon each left the yard. Interestingly, Dixon had homered twice the previous day against the California 5-3 0-0 - Bulldogs, marking the only other two-homer game the Wildcats have had at Hi Corbett since moving into the Oregon State 5-3 0-0 - ballpark in 2012. Washington 5-3 0-0 - Arizona State 4-3 0-0 - Back-to-Back Jacks: Last Saturday, Riley Moore and Bobby Dalbec hit back-to-back home runs against Rice. Washington State 4-4 0-0 - It was a rare occurrence at cavernous Hi Corbett Field, which had never yielded back-to-back home runs for Stanford 3-4 0-0 - the Wildcats or their opponents since Arizona moved into the facility for the 2012 season. Interestingly, Moore Utah 1-7 0-0 - was involved the last time the Wildcats had consecutive homers. That happened on March 24, 2012, at Oregon State when the Wildcats rallied for a victory. That day, Moore’s homer followed a dinger from Bobby Brown. Pac-12 Midweek Schedule (Feb. 24-25) Tuesday Better Late Than Never: Arizona’s win last Saturday was noteworthy for more reasons than Kevin New- Nevada at Stanford 6:30 p.m. man’s walkoff steal of home. It marked a victory for the Wildcats when they were trailing after eight innings. Portland at Oregon 7 p.m. A season ago, that was a grim prospect as Arizona went 1-26 in games it trailed entering the ninth frame. Long Beach State at UCLA 7 p.m. Going back even further, the Wildcats have won just 13 times in 320 chances when trailing after eight innings USC at Fresno State 7:30 p.m. since 2000. That’s a .041 winning percentage. Tuesday King Conquers New Territory: Junior Scott Kingery’s transition from to has Portland at Washington 6 p.m. gone exactly as planned. The returning Pac-12 All-Conference honoree has settled in nicely to his new po- sitions, displaying outstanding range that the Wildcats have lacked at the position in recent seasons. Of- fensively, he’s continued to be one of the team’s best hitters. After leading the club with a .354 average last season, Kingery is batting .486 and slugging a team-best .743. He’s hit two doubles, two triples and has one All times listed as MST of the squad’s five home runs to date. He leads the Wildcats with 17 total base hits and leads with nine runs batted in. He was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after Opening Weekend.

Up the Middle Men: An adage in baseball says that good teams are strong up the middle. If that’s true and Arizona’s “middle” continues its early season trends, then the Wildcats are in for good things in 2015. Pac-12 In The Top 25 Rankings Preseason All-America candidates Kevin Newman and Scott Kingery form on of the best middle infields in the country and have yet to disappoint. Each is hitting .394 or better and each has already made a handful of School BA USA Today NCBWA CB D1Base nifty defensive plays. However, the unknown commodity coming into the year was the centerfield position, UCLA 8 9 7 8 4 which was snatched up by Justin Behnke. The junior college transfer has settled in nicely, hitting .348 in eight Arizona State 18 21 20 9 17 starts and displaying terrific range in the cavernous Hi Corbett outfield. Collectively, the trio is batting .418 Oregon 20 16 12 13 20 Stanford NR 22 NR NR NR with 24 runs scored to date. The first eight starting lineups this season have seen them hit consecutively in the order, with Behnke serving as a second leadoff man out of the No. 9 hole to set up Kingery and Newman at the top of the lineup. NR represents not ranked.

Dalbec Dialed In: Arizona does not boast a lineup built on power, but sophomore Bobby Dalbec offers a true power bat in the lineup. However, the dual threat hitter/pitcher is thriving on singles in the right situations. He is second on the team with seven runs batted in to date due in large part to his 6-for-14 (.429) batting with Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll runners in scoring position. He’s delivered four run-scoring singles with runners in scoring position, while saving a triple and two home runs as his weapons to drive in his other three runs. Last season, Dalbec was Team...... Arizona vs. The Conferences Back for Moore: Senior catcher Riley Moore, batting .370 entering this week, is back for one last hurrah, something few would have expected to see a year ago. Troupe in the Record Books: In his first two seasons with the Wildcats (2012-13), Mathew troupe racked up 15 saves to tie for third-most in school history with Daniel Schlereth (2006-08), who has three years of Major League service. Mark Melancon, now a Pirate in his sixth year of Major League action, collected 18 saves from 2004-06. The school career record is held by Jason Stoffel, who tallied 29 saves from 2007-09. Stoffel is currently in the Houston Astros organization. Interestingly, Trevor Hoffman, who ranks No. 2 in history with 601 career saves, played shortstop as a Wildcat.

Championship Experience: Believe it or not, Arizona’s roster includes five players that were a part of the 2012 national championship club. The two most prominent names are catcher Riley Moore and pitcher Mathew Troupe, who returns after undergoing Tommy John surgery last season. Also back for a senior salute is Joseph Maggi, a versatile left-handed bat that has played outfield and first base for the Wildcats. Left-handed pitchers Xavier Borde and Tyler Crawford also return, though Crawford will be sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery early last fall.

On Deck: Arizona will play four games this weekend in Starkville, Miss. The Wildcats will play twice on Friday, including at 2 p.m. (CST) against Samford and later against Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m. (CST). On Saturday, the Wildcats will play host MSU at 2 p.m. (CST) before finishing play Sunday against Samford at 1 p.m. (CST). Friday’s game against MSU will air on SEC Network+, while Saturday’s game vs. MSU will be televised on the SEC Network.
