1935 Sir Malcolm Campbell’s car Bluebird (Daytona Beach, Florida, USA) THE HISTORY OF ROLEX AND MOTOR SPORT

Rolex is a major force at play behind the finest events, drivers and organizations in motor sport. Whether supporting the leading motor sport series, Formula 1®; iconic endurance races, such as the and the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA; or honouring tradition with the historic Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the Goodwood Revival, Rolex has cultivated a privileged relationship with this forward-thinking and innovative world.

The Rolex alliance with motor sport dates back to the 1930s when Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the 300 mph barrier (483 km/h) at the wheel of his World Land Speed Record car, Bluebird, with a Rolex on his wrist. For over 85 years, Rolex’s presence in motor sport has grown steadily, fueled by a shared passion for performance and technology. In 1959, Rolex’s association with Daytona International Speedway® began, and in 1963, the iconic Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph was launched. A few years later, Rolex added the name ‘Daytona’ to the dial of the iconic chronograph, created for racing drivers, to mark its connection with the speedway.

In 1968, Rolex formed a close relationship with one of the sport’s most emblematic figures, three-time FIA Formula 1® Drivers’ World Champion Sir , an affiliation which still endures today, more than 50 years later. Rolex announced its Title Sponsorship of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA in 1992, and nine years later, in 2001, became the Official Timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s oldest and most prestigious endurance sports car race. In 2010, record nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Tom Kristensen, was welcomed as a Rolex Testimonee and more recently, the brand partnered with the FIA World Endurance Championship, further strengthening its relationship with endurance racing.

In 2001, Rolex became a partner of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion held annually in California, and nine years later became the Title Sponsor of the event. Rolex has been associated with the Goodwood Revival since 2004, supporting their revered Drivers’ Club which sits at the heart of the three-day festivities.

Not only does motor sport offer a powerful combination of , endurance and nostalgia, it is also the ultimate test of human and technical performance. While striving for excellence, the motor sport world constantly focuses on innovation and continuous improvement, creating knowledge and expertise which can be shared with the wider society.

Rolex Testimonee and motor sport legend, Sir Jackie Stewart reflects: “Few sports have ever been blessed with long-term relationships such as that of Rolex and motor racing. The Swiss watch brand aligns itself with excellence in every endeavour it supports and Rolex continues to lead the world in that respect.”

ROLEX AND MOTOR SPORT PRESS KIT 9/26 ROLEX AND ENDURANCE RACING

2021 Rolex 24 At DAYTONA (USA) In line with its passion for speed and drive to push the boundaries of what is possible, Rolex partners the FIA World Endurance Championship as well as the three world-class events that have come to form the Triple Crown of endurance racing: the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA, the and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Engine speed and reliability, along with driver and team stamina, are magnified during these extremely challenging races, which offer a rich history and require unique concentration, mental strength and skill. The winners of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA and the winners of the 24 Hours of Le Mans both receive a specially engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, the ultimate accolade in motor sport, revered for its legendary status, reliability and performance.

Thanks to its long-standing commitment to motor sport at the highest level, and endurance racing more specifically, Rolex has forged relationships with two of the sport’s greatest names: nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, and 2015 FIA World Endurance Champion Mark Webber.

Tom Kristensen explains how endurance racing is a constantly evolving test: “Persistence, human endeavour and teamwork are some of the key synergies between Rolex and endurance racing. During a 24-hour race, you must always expect the unexpected and be at the top of your game physically and mentally. The most important qualities to show behind the wheel are speed, reliability and determination. It is important to drive fast and be consistent at the same time, while always staying alert. Events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans demand the very highest level of preparation and performance from drivers, teams and cars, which is echoed in Rolex’s culture and quest for perfection.”

ROLEX AND MOTOR SPORT PRESS KIT 10/26 ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

2021 Rolex 24 At DAYTONA (USA)

The Rolex 24 At DAYTONA is regarded by many as one of the toughest races on the motor sport calendar. Conducted over a compact 5.73 km (3.56 mile) closed circuit, North America’s premier sports car race challenges drivers with a unique combination of the high-banked turns of the tri-oval superspeedway, interrupted by a chicane on the back straight and a sweeping, fast infield section, including two hairpins. This demanding course is made even more challenging given that approximately 800 laps are needed to complete it, over half of which are tackled in darkness.

As a pioneer of sponsorship, the Swiss watch brand has supported racing at Daytona International Speedway® since the track opened in 1959, however the connection with the area dates back further still. The long, flat and very firm Daytona Beach played host to 14 World Land Speed Records in the early part of the 20th century – five of which were set by Rolex wearer Sir Malcolm Campbell, including the fastest official record of 276 mph (444 km/h) in 1935 at the wheel of his mighty car, Bluebird. In 1992, Rolex became the Title Sponsor of this endurance epic, formalizing a long-standing association with the Speedway and strengthening the link between the 24-hour race and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona watch. The brand is now so closely tied to the event that aficionados simply refer to it as ‘The Rolex’.

The 59th edition of the race took place from Saturday 30 to Sunday 31 January 2021 and marked Rolex’s 30th edition as the Title Sponsor and the Official Timepiece of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA.

The championship then travels to Fuji, Japan, in September before concluding with the 8 Hours of Bahrain in November 2021.

ROLEX AND MOTOR SPORT PRESS KIT 12/26 24 HOURS OF LE MANS

2020 24 Hours of Le Mans (France)

Since 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans – the world’s oldest and most iconic endurance race – has embodied the core values at the heart of the sport, all of which are shared by Rolex: prestige, durability and dedication. While the 24 Hours of Le Mans is steeped in history, the race also provides a testing ground for significant technological and safety developments which impact the automotive world and beyond. Through its partnership as the Official Timepiece for the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2001, Rolex continues to support excellence in motor sport for the long-term.

In its almost 100-year history, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has called on drivers to continuously perfect their skills in preparation for this famous race. It represents the ultimate test for them and their teams, both physically and mentally. The team that covers the most distance in 24 hours at Circuit de la Sarthe wins, emphasizing the intricate balance between a car’s speed and its reliability in extreme environments. A car can lead the race with hours or minutes to spare, but the slightest tactical misjudgement, or even the most benign mechanical issue, can cost crucial time and see hopes of victory evaporate. Efficiency in the pit lane is vital, both in terms of the of stops, as well as how long they take; teams need to manage resources and function like clockwork. On the circuit, it takes nerve and racecraft to know when to push and when to look after the car. Over the years, Le Mans has witnessed many great battles: split second finishes, dramatic mechanical failures and race-changing weather. Preparation for all eventualities is fundamental, while experience is invaluable to make the correct split-second decision.

The 89th edition will take place from Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 August 2021 and Rolex will celebrate its 20th anniversary as the Official Timepiece of this legendary 24-hour race.

ROLEX AND MOTOR SPORT PRESS KIT 24/26 ABOUT ROLEX

AN UNRIVALLED REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND EXPERTISE Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Cellini watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization.

The word “Perpetual” is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 500 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet. Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts and culture, sport and exploration, as well as those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet.
