In 1950 the American Craft Council sponsored the first "Young Americans" competition to bring national attention to the work of new and emerging talents in contemporary crafts. It was followed by twelve others, the last being a series of three competitions by media held between 1977 and 1980. "YOUNG AMERICANS: Fiber, Wood, Plastic, Leather" initiated the series in 1977, followed by "YOUNG AMERICANS: Clay/Glass" in 1978 and "YOUNG AMERI CANS: Metal" in 1980. For the three competitions, a total of over 11 ,000 slides were submitted by 2,366 people. 322 artists were accepted for exhibition. Of these, 19 artists were selected as award win ners in recognition of outstanding achievement. "YOUNG AMERICANS: Award Winners" focuses on the recent work of these 19 artists. Through highlighting their new work, the exhibition both demonstrates their continued c6mmitment to professionalism and excellence and suggests new directions in contemporary crafts. While it is difficult to make stylistic generalizations regarding 19 artists working in varied media, an aesthetic similarity reflecting current artistic trends is evident. This is most clear in the shared approach to decoration and geometric pat terning visible in many of the works. In addition to the crea tive imagination apparent in the work, the extremely high level of technical achievement attained by each of these art ists is reflected throughout the exhibition. We wish to express our appreciation to the exhibiting artists for their cooperation in the organization of the exhibition and for the loan of their work. Our gratitude is also due to the sev eral private collectors and galleries who so generously loaned work for this exhibition.
