Clockwise from top left: Standing in an alcove off the living area is Legend’s Yamaha piano. A gathering spot in the main part of the space features a pair of vintage leather Arne Norell armchairs. In the bedroom, Damien Hirst butterfly prints hang above two of Legend’s many Grammy Awards. An antique gilded-leather screen is installed be- hind the bed from Siglo Moderno. A steel wall enhances the moody atmosphere in the dining area; the light fixture is by Ochre, and the candlesticks are by Ted Muehling.

Clockwise from near left: Actor Patrick Dempsey tends to the outdoor oven at his home in Malibu, California. Custom- made sofas upholstered in a Great Plains fabric flank the living room fireplace. A vintage Jacques Adnet daybed graces the entrance hall of the residence, which was conceived by architect Frank Gehry in the 1960s. The kitchen is equipped with concrete countertops, a Wolf range, and a Best hood. Olive trees surround the corrugated-metal dwelling, named Tin House by previous owners. “The exterior’s simplicity appealed to me,” says Dempsey, “and the inside felt very expansive and calm ing. Everywhere you looked there was some thing visually pleasing.”

6 Left: Stylesetter Aerin Lauder in the Manhattan headquarters of Aerin, her home furnishings, fash- ion, and beauty venture. She collaborated with decorator Jacques Grange on the design. “We wanted it to feel like a creative space,” she says. “But because the line is about embracing a kind of everyday ele- gance, we wanted the office to do that as well.” Opposite, clock- wise from top left: A large art- work by Paul Lange blooms in the entrance hall. A meeting room features a George Condo oil painting. Green sofas and a Baguès chan delier define the main room. 10 Clockwise from far left: Entertainer and urban- garden activist Bette Midler strikes a pose in the living area of the Manhattan triplex apart- ment she shares with her husband, investor and performance artist Martin von Haselberg; the fireplace tiles were handmade by Kim Dickey. ‘Alchemist’ climbing roses flourish on one of the terraces; the steel-and-glass rail- ing is a Sawyer | Berson design. In the dining area, John Derian Co. plates occupy a shelf above a Roger Herman painting. A terrace is outfitted with custom-made furni- ture inspired by 1930s pieces by Jean-Charles Moreux and Bolette Natanson. Midler’s enthusiasm for Wiener B ETTE Werkstätte design is apparent in the living area, which features vintage ebonized furnishings by Austrian architect Josef MIDLER Hoffmann. “I don’t make Iwn Ne York City a study of anything,” she asserts. “If I fall in love architecture by Frederick fisher and partners architects with something, I want it.” Interiors by Fernando Santangelo Landscape design by Sawyer|berson Photography by William Waldron

12 Near left: Giorgio Armani in the entrance hall of his summer retreat in Saint-Tropez. “I have fun with my homes, which have been my greatest investments,” the designer says. “I don’t buy Picassos, I buy houses.” Clockwise from bottom center: The chairs and metal vases in the dining room are by Armani/Casa. The living room’s ceiling, book- cases, and floor are made of polished African teak. Running along the back of the residence is a loggia appointed with Armani/Casa furnishings; the pillows and rugs were found in Saint- Tropez, and the figures with the gong are from Thailand. Armani is especially pleased gior o with the home’s lushly planted site, which doesn’t look directly onto the water. “I didn’t want the sea in my face,” he remarks. “When armani people come to visit me, they are always innt sai -tropez, Fr ance very surprised. Brooklyn-born fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi combined three units to form his spacious apartment in Greenwich Village. “My mother always told me, if you want to stay young, live in the Village!” he says. Above: Mizrahi, seated, with his husband, Arnold Germer, in the den. Opposite, from top left: An armchair and ottomans in the den are clad in Isaac Mizrahi for S. Harris fabrics. The terrace is outfitted with a Fermob table and chairs from John Derian Co. In the living room, a pair of vintage Ole Wanscher armchairs join a Fort Street Studio rug. “I work with color and pattern all day long, but there’s a reserve to my personal taste,” Mizrahi says. “To me the essence of style, at least in terms of the apartment, is a gradual refining process.”

17 Far left: Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, a nightlife entrepreneur, at their Los Cabos, Mexico, home, which was built in tandem with George Clooney’s house next door. “Our lives go back and forth,” Crawford says. “We’ll have cock- tails at our place and dinner at George’s, and vice versa.” Clockwise from top center: The couple’s courtyard is furnished with custom- cindy made seating by Jasper. The dining room table incor- porates a large lazy Susan the actor is par- ticularly fond of because, he says, “you don’t want to have to work too hard when you’re down here.”

21 Actress Julianne Moore, pictured at center, is also an accomplished ama- teur interior designer, but she had trouble getting a garden going behind her fam- ily’s 1905 New York City townhouse. “It was a disaster,” she says. “It looked like a dog run.” She called in Brian Sawyer of Sawyer|Berson to give her a green space like those of Belgian landscape maestro Jacques Wirtz. Clock- wise from above: Vintage Woodard chairs furnish a seat- ing area. The blue- stone terrace is ringed by boxwood and ivy; Moore says she was worried she wouldn’t be able to cope with the basketball hoop, but, she adds, “I quite like it now. It’s black, so that makes it okay.” Sawyer mounted ji ul anne moore staghorn ferns on the in NEW YORK city home’s rear façade. Landscape design by Sawyer|berson Photography by christopher baker

Actors Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, shown at far left, renovated a Harlem townhouse to accommodate their two young children, dogs, and Harris’s production company. “You have to weigh the value of things when you have two dogs who slobber and two kids who love to finger-paint,” Harris says. “The top half of the walls is where we put every- thing that’s valuable.” Clockwise from top center: Artworks by Brian Wills, Noah Davis, and Annie Lapin surround Room & Board sofas in the living room. The master bedroom is highlighted by a Calico Wallpaper design. Holly Hunt pendant lights are suspended above the kitchen’s Caesarstone- top island. In the music room, walls clad in a Donghia fabric serve as a backdrop for a large Annie Lapin painting, which overlooks a Yamaha player piano and a Bourgeois Bohème Atelier chaise longue.

Left: In the living room, a pair of brass pendant lights by Bullard (one is shown), capacious sofas dressed in a Schumacher velvet, and a Mansour Modern cowhide rug help make the large space more intimate; the red text-based painting is by Claire Fontaine.

28 Clockwise from top left: A Jean de Merry chandelier hangs above a set of Timothy Oulton chairs by RH and a Michael Berman Limited cocktail table in the library. Dark colors, oak- paneled walls, and a silk carpet turn the master bedroom into a sumptuous cocoon; the bed was custom designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, the curtain and canopy fabric is by Schumacher, and the jeweled brass stool is by Kelly Wearstler. The home’s most decadent change was a new hammam sheathed in Turkish marble; “Crazy follies were not uncommon in movie-star palaces built around the same time as this house,” notes the Grey’s Anatomy star, “so it’s hardly out of left field.” Positioned near the pool are RH lanterns and Gloster lounge chairs with cushions of a Schumacher fabric.
