Guild of St Stephen History of the Guild Father Hamilton MacDonald founded the Guild of St. Stephen in in 1904 when he formed a society of altar servers in the local Parish of Brook Green. Cardinal Francis Bourne, who established the Guild at , took up the idea. This Guild was approved by Pope St. Pius X in 1905, and on 4th November 1906, was raised to the status of an Archconfraternity enabling all the Parish Branches to be linked with it. The Guild spread, and in 1934, the year after the death of Father MacDonald, Pope Pius XI enabled all Guilds of altar servers throughout the British Commonwealth to be affiliated with the Archconfraternity at Westminster. It was in these circumstances that the Guild was established in Australia in 1954 through the efforts of Father Rex Donohoe from the Archdiocese of Hobart. The guild acts as support and advisors for those wishing to have a role as Altar Servers. In Australia Altar Servers can be admitted into the guild from year 7 onwards. It is an honour to be admitted to the guild. With this in mind we are proud to announce that Rachael Vander Haar, Joshua Childs, Torsten Johnson & Jack Kay were inducted into the St Stephen's Guild on Friday 1st May. The mass was celebrated by His Grace Archbishop Denis Hart and Priests from various parishes in the grandeur of St Patrick's Cathedral. 110 Altar servers from 24 Parishes received the St Stephen's Guild medal from His Grace. They look forward to wearing their medals with pride for their wonderful service. Thank you to Fr Jerald & Fr Peter and their families for their continued guidance and support. We the community would like to Congratulate Rachael, Joshua, Torsten and Jack on their induction to the Guild. We are so proud of you. Evangelii Gaudium “I have always been distressed at the lot of those who are victims of various kinds of human trafficking. How I wish that all of us would hear God’s cry: ‘Where is your brother?’ (Gen 4:9). Where is your brother or sister who is enslaved? Where are the brother and sister whom you are killing each day in clandestine warehouses, in rings of prostitution, in children used for begging, in exploiting undocumented labour? Let us not look the other way. There is greater complicity than we think. The issue involves everyone! This infamous network of crime is now well established in our cities, and many people have blood on their hands as a result of their comfortable and silent complicity.” Par 211 from Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis, Nov. 24, 2013
